Mike,
The difference here is between what we would refer to as an online backup
versus an offline backup.. If you use NTBackup it is able to do a backup of
the Exchange database while Exchange is running.. If the backup program you
are using is not Exchange aware then you would probably want to stop
Exchange before doing the backup so that a) the databases/logs are not in
use.. However, by doing an offline backup the log files are not removed
like they should be when doing an online backup.. Which may lead to a large
amount of diskspace being used uneccessarily..
