While I am awaiting a long hard decision off the Company Boss to purchased
the advised third party back up software can anyone let me know what is the
best way to handle the log files in exchange until the software looks after
it for me? I believe the native back up does not purge the logs or have I
missed something here?

NTBackup purges the log files just fine. Do a backup to a hard drive and the
logs will be flushed.

When you select the information store (not the files on disk) it will flush
the logs.
