Hi everyone,

I have a SBS2000 that I've just had to reformat and reinstall. On
reinstallation, the customer wanted to upgrade from a permanent dialup
connection to an ADSL connection.

I have installed a 2nd NIC in the SBS box, and can successfully web browse
from each workstation so I know the Internet connectivity is OK.

Here is my problem:

The server is unable to send or receive any e-mail.

Mail just sits in the outbound queue. I have run the Internet Connection
Wizard and answered all the relevent questions correctly (5 times).

The internet connection has a static IP address which has been correctly
configured, and the MX records for the domain point to the correct IP
address. However, I am unable to ping the IP address, telnet to port 25 of
the IP address or traceroute to the IP address.

As far as I can see, I have opened port 25 on ISA server

This one has me stumped. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Steve,

I was just wondering - you said you cannot ping or telnet the to the IP
address - was that from the server itself?

If you try Telnet to port 25 on both the internal and external network
adapter from the server itself - does it work? If so then the server is
ready to send\receive mail but something external is blocking it. Is there
any router\firewall hardware between the server and the ADSL line? Does
the server get the public IP or does the ADSL do Nat?

If you cannot Telnet to the external network card's IP then check out:
-the SMTP virtual server - is it set to 'All unassigned'?
-if you turn off packet filtering and restart the services are you able to
telent now? If so you are either missing a packet filter or have a corrupt
filter.
-from a command prompt: netstat -an should tell you if the server is
listening on port 25
-is there any exchange aware antivirus on the system that scans mail before
hitting the server - these programs sometimes use port 25 and require you
to use another port for the SMTP virtual server.

Any errors in the event logs?
Checked Binding order of NICs?
Is there a router on the network (allowing port 25 to pass through)?

You can browse the net, have you tried Shields Up at
GRC.Com, does it tell you port 25 is open?

If it's closed, do you have a router firewall that could
be blocking it.

Make sure your ISP is not blocking port 25, or stopping
smtp feeds on this port.
