DHCP Question. Advantage?
Hello,
A small company, 10 pcs, XP Pro Service Pack 2 pcs. SBS2000 server. Should I
permanently assign ip numbers to each pc? Is there an advantage to letting
the XP Pro pc get it's ip address resassigned? The setup involves the 2

cached mode fix
I had some problems with cached mode in outlook 2003 also on the server
sbs2000 i enabled the deletion settings to 45 days.
It so happened that the user had some messages that were 40/120mb in size
emails.
I used the filter on the deleted items folder and set it to anything less
than 5mb in size.
So that's how i fixed my cached mode problems.
hope this helps someone.

SMTP connector
I have a SBS exchange server with a smtp connector. The connector
freezes on a particular domain sometimes and says "scheduled" in the

nothing has changed on the server. The domain has been used before
this because it is the address for our blackberries.

Fax Server issues....
I know this isn't the correct area to post this issue but hopefully someone
has had this issue before...
We have installed a BrookTrout TRUFax 2 port board into our WIndwos 2003
"standard" server and installed the "Fax" services so we can send receive
faxes...
The software installs fine but it will not "see" the fax board. It simply
says "All fax printers are inaccessible" in teh status area (bottom right)
of the "Fax Monitor".
If you attempt to go into "Tools->Fax Service Manager" a message is
displayed saying...
"Could not open a connection to the fax service. The faxx service might not
be started or the computer name might be incorrect".
The fax service is strted and runing under the Local system\nt authority
account"
It will then take you to the "Fax Service Manager Window" but you cannot do
anything. If you right click "Fax" in teh left pane and click "Properties' I
get an "Access Denied" error...
Also, if I right click the "Fax" printer added to "Printers and Faxes" and
right click to access the Properties, I get a "You do not have security
permissions to complete this operation. Contact the fax administrator for
more information." error message.
I even found a document that suggested adding the "Local System", Network
Services" and "Administrators" groups to the local security policy - Windows
Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/User Rights Assignment - "Generate
Security Audits" policy but that did not solve the problem...
This Win2K3 server is a backup domain controller and I am logged on with my
domain account.
Has anyone ahd this type of a problem???
Thanks,
Brad
PS... This partiular brooktrout board is meant for a Win2K3 server - it does
not work in a WIn2K server. Tag: Exchange 2000 Tag: 172681
Cannot Find Number of Licences Installed?
Hi,
I've inherited a Small Business Server 2000 that was built by somebody else,
anyway it had none of the SBS admin stuff on there so today I installed it
all from the SBS setup on CD1.
I still cannot find how many licences are installed, any suggestions?
I'm quite sure the server came with 5, but the company I worked for have 9
employees, however I don't want to buy a 5 CAL pack if they'll soon need 20.
Likewise I don't want to buy 20 if they already have 10 installed!!!
Thanks in advance

Network with SBS via VLAN's
What am attempting to accomplish is to have 2 Vlans. One VLAN would have the
SBS server on it and would support my computer network and IP Phones on that
priviate network. Then I want to create a 2nd Vlan that would just support IP
Phones and would not require and of the services of the SBS. Basically what I
am trying to accomplish is to have a 2 node IP Telelephone system.
Adtran make a device that that a router, a managed switch, and Power over
Ethernet all in one. I plan on using this Adtran device to set up the 2
VLANs' and
also connect my broadband connection to it. I plan on mapping the two VLAN's
together so the IP Phones can communicate.
I would set up the SBS Server with only one network adapter and the Adtran
router would become the default gateway. I will also be installing a Harware
firewall.
Do this sound like it would work.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Another Question on Exchange Disk Space
Again, thanks to you all for your input on my question about disk space
for Exchange.
I did an Exchange-aware backup last night and freed up about a half-gig
of space on the M: drive. That still leaves me with only 1.9GB of free
space on my M: drive. But as I understand it from your responses, if
the M: drive is a virtual drive pointer to the Exchange database stored
on my C: drive then the amount of free space on the M: drive is
irrelevant since that's not where the data is stored
If what I said above is correct, then I'm still low on disk space for
Exchange because I have less than 2GB of free space on my C: drive. But
I have almost 40GB of free space on drive F: which is where I store
users' home folders and company folders. Would it be OK to move the
Exchange database to the F: drive under an Exchange folder even though
it's not a partition?
Thanks so much.

Server Replacement
I have an old SBS2000 server, very old CPU, maxed out RAM wise. Old system
has 2 HD (20 GB C:, 80 GB D). Am purchasing a new server, Dell PowerEdge 800
with two (2) 160 GB drives.
I need to replace my OLD SBS2000 server with the new one, but don't want to
have to manually reconfigure everything. Is there a way to do a clean install
on the new Server, while retrieving data from the old SBS2000? I figure I
will have to do it over the weekend when the network is "offline". Trying to
avoid manually reconfiguring all of my server settings on the new box. Old
SBS will be retired after migration. Thanks. Tag: Exchange 2000 Tag: 172644

Exchange 2K is getting hammered
We are getting mercilessly hammered with what looks like people
relaying spam through our Exchange server. I followed the advice last
year to make sure we aren't an open relay but the Current Sessions
queue in SMTP is constantly filled with email from outside domains and
we are getting 10-20K undeliverable emails everyday.
If I adjust the Access checkboxes so Anonymous Access is removed the
spam stops but we don't receive outside email. This is an Exchange
2000 server with SP3 on SBS2K and we are hosting our own email for
three different domains.
I talked to our consultant today and he suggested putting another box
in front of the Exchange server so it can get hammered and not the SBS
server. I'm going to research this and I was wondering if anyone else
had some alternate ideas on dealing with this.
Thanks! Tag: Exchange 2000 Tag: 172629

Forwarding mail to external mailcontact and deliver locally
Hi all,
I have this problem on a SBS2000 and also on the SBS2003 version.
Forwarding (AD Users, Exchange General, Forwarding) to an external contact
works fine.
Sending Mail directly to that contact also works fine!
But when I ask exchange to deliver the messages to both the forwarding
address and Exchange mailbox, the forwarding doesn't work anymore. :-(
Strange thing is that this used to work on several servers, but now (maybe
due to a service pack update?) this doesn't work anymore for new forwardings!
Does anyone has suggestions?
Thanks in advance,

Questions about how to set up exchange 2003
Hello,
I want to run the wizard to connect to the internet especially for Exchange.
I'm not sure about some of the questions.
We have a domain name registered and hosted by our ISP. We get pop3 e-mail
from them without a problem.
I don't know how to answer the wizard when it asks to "Use DNS to route
e-mail" or "Forward all e-mail to e-mail server at your ISP"
Next question is "E-amil is delivered directly to my server" or "Email held
at ISP until my server sends a signal".
How do i determine the answers to these questions and what do i ask my ISP
to get the answers to these questions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Problems with mail delivery
Sorry for posting twice. Not sure if this one went trough, I don't see my
message anywhere, so here I go again.
This is my scenario:
We use exchange to send internal emails, share calendar, ect, we use and
outside service to receive external emails.
Guys something weird is happening here with one user
when one user cpalermo CC people within the office (ex.cnicholes) and does
"sent to" someone outside the office and when the person from the outside
replies he receives the following message:
Subject: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)
The following message to <cnicholes@mydomain.local> was
undeliverable.
The reason for the problem:
5.1.2 - Bad destination host 'DNS Hard Error looking up
mydomain.local (MX): NXDomain'
When I go to cnicholes account in AD his default emial address is
cnicholes@mydomaim.com which is correct and this is how it should be. His
secondary is cnicholes@mydomain.local
Also some users have in their address books with types of entries (FQDN and
non-FQDN) for each person email address from within the office. By default,
their Outlook inserts the non-FQDN.
I would apreciate if some one can tell me or help me look for a solution for
this one. This is only happening with this one user.
Thanks to everyone in advance.

Server Crash
Hi All once a week mainly on sunday night the sbs2000 box stops working. It
basically will not let the administrator log on and all connectivity to it is
dead. After a hard reboot it comes up ok and the only thing in the event
viewer is as follows: The server was unable to allocate from the system paged
pool because the pool was empty. There is no special 3rd party software on it
and it only has started hapening a few months ago. Has anyone got any ideas
please. We had a similar problem on another sbs2000 box and we resolved that
by upgrading to sbs2003 !!
Any help is much apreciated.

Outlook Web Access
We have an SBS 2K server configured with two NIC's and are
using OWA. However we can only access OWA remotely by first
setting up a VPN connection to authenticate to the server
and then running http://192.168.16.2/exchange where we have
to authenticate a second time to open the mailbox. My
understanding of OWA was to connect to the public IP
address of the server. When we try to do this we just get a
time out error. Can anyone please help me with this problem.
Thankyou in advance.

these solutions are.

Brightmail Authentication Problem
I have installed Brightmail AntiSpam on a SBS 2000 server running exchange
and ISA.
For some reason I am unable to activate the product through their
registration wizard. I am able to connect to the internet OK and all seems
alright but it just won't work.
Brightmail support have checked the installation logs and everything
installed ok and they say will work as soon as registered properly. I am
able to browse to their secure site ok and they and I are confused as to why
I am unable to contact the Brightmail registration server.
There is some sort of proxy server setting (I don't know why I would need it
anyway) which call for a username and password. When I enter the
administrator name and administrator I am refused access to the internet!
Not sure what's happening here either.
Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions?
Thanks

average life of a server machine?
Hi, all,
Please allow me to ask a very basic question. I am wondering how long is the

statistics yet. Thanks. Tag: Exchange 2000 Tag: 172541

My event log includes several instances of the above error each day. I have
read a previous discussion about this error but became totally confused. I
only have one NIC and I wondered if anyone could tell me where to find the
Local Address Table or the Windows 2000 routing table and how I would go
about amending them. Help just makes it worse - if I type in Local Address
table I get a long list of apparantly unrelated references - nowhere does it
tell me what the LAT is or where to find it !

BSOD POWER EDGE SERVER SBS 2000
I am not sure if this is the correct group to be addressing. If it is
not please point me in the right direction.
I have a Dell poweredge 2500 server running sbs 2000. I rebooted it
last month after swapping the battery in our APC. Now every time it
reboots I get the BSOD with an inaccesible boot device error. Now here
is the puzzling part, If i run chkdsk it takes about an hour says it
has fixed errors on the drive and lets me boot into sbs but if i then
reboot the system i get the BSOD again!. What can be causing this it is
driving me mad.

Problem Logging into the Domain on a Notebook
Hello,
SBS2K, WinXP Pro notebook.
I am having trouble logging into the domain from a notebook. When I try to
log in normally to the domain using either the Administrative account, or a
users account that was always using the notebook (and also a local admin for
the notebook), I receive the following message:
"Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller
is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not
found."
Also, if I try to log into the local computer, as opposed to the domain,
with either the administrative account or a user account, both members of
the local Administrators group, I receive the following message:
"The system could not log you on. Make sure your username and domain are
correct, then type your password. Letters in passwords must be typed using
the correct case."
The strangest part of all this is that if I turn off the wireless card and
unplug the network cable then try to log into the domain using the
Administrator account, I can successfully log in. Then, I can reconnect the
cable and work normally.
Since one of the messages I received mentioned the computer not being found
in the domain, I went ahead and changed the computer domain after logging in
in the manner I just described. After I did that and rebooted, I checked
Active Directory, and saw the newly created computer. When I tried to log
back in though, I received the same message as before.
Now, I have no idea what to do to fix this. I haven't seen this problem
before. Any ideas would be appreciated. If there is any more relevant info I
haven't provided, I would be happy to do so. Thanks,

Can't Send/Receive From OWA
I'm running SBS 2003 on our server and Office Outlook 2003 on a remote
machine that has WinXP Media Edition for the OS. When using Outlook Web
Access from Remote Web Workplace or directly via https://serverIP/exchange I
can see, read & delete emails but cannot send or receive them.
Emails I send end up in the Administrator's mailbox with the sender's name
showing as myname@mydomain.local.
Haven't been able to find a solution to this. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks. Tag: Exchange 2000 Tag: 172532
SBS Pop3 Service and Outlook Express
Hello Everyone,
Another baffling glitch!
A client who travels a lot can't VPN to the server,
and doesn't like OWA.
When I tried to connect outlook express to collect POP3
mail from the SBS 2000 server, I get prompted for user
name and password.
No matter what combination I try, nothing will work.
Just keeps prompting for user name and password.
I even took the notebook into the client's office and
plugged it into the LAN with a cable. After changing all
the settings so it knows where the server is, it pings the server
but still is challenged for a user name and password when
attempting to pop for the mail.
Anyone know of a reason or a fix????
Thanks for your help!

Trouble with sbs2k in Terminal Server app mode.
I migrated an SBS 2000 server to a new SBS 2003 server. That was mostly
smooth and easy.
I then reformated the old SBS 2000 server and reinstalled the 2000 OS and
then STOPPED before installing the SBS components.
At that point I made the server a member server of the 2003 domain set up
Terminal Services for application mode, installed my applications, set my
policies, etc, and then let users go nuts. I did not install any licenses
since all the clients are using XP PRO and should supposedly be issued a
free license.
This worked GREAT for a couple of months, then all of a sudden we are
getting the can't issue a license error (The remote computer disconnected
the session because of an error in the licensing protocol). Before you post
that I should delete the MSLicensing key on the clients, let me say that
that doesn't work.
It's irritating because it worked for a long time, then just quit. Tag: Exchange 2000 Tag: 172515
Crazy Firewall/Email Problem
I have a user that is using Outlook (Office XP version) and cannot send
email through an external Internet email server. He is using the same
settings as everyone else on the network and they are all working. His
email account settings are ok and he can log in to his email via a web
browser.
I took his settings to a computer that was working but after I put his
account on their computer now that user is failing (drat!).
The one clue I have found is in the 'Small Business Server
Administrator Console', (yes they are configured to go through ISA
server). For the users that fail they show no User and their Client
Computer is listed as an ip Address rather than a machine name such as
WKSTN12.
