I will be setting up Exchange this weekend and I have a
question on user names. The company already uses and
outside ISP to host thier website and thier email. I will
be using the POP3 Connector to grab that mail and bring it
down to the Exchange.

My question is: I will be setting up the usernames on the
network with the First Initial, Last Name. The users
current email address' are set up as firstname@domain.com.
Do I have to change thier email address' to match what
their login names will be? Or is their something in
Exchange that "maps" that email to that username?

Also, this company has a domain name with thier ISP. When
i set up this domain controller this weekend, do i name
the domain the same as thier outside domain name, or do i
name it something different? I remember seeing something
about naming it something different, such as domain.local.
Is this what i should be doing?

Thanks, MIKE

your users will get an email address in the form user@whatever, you will
need to adjust it to first@whatever, you can do this during account
creation.

PLEASE DO NOT call your server server.fqdn.com

Hello Mike,

With regards to your domain name, it is advisable to use domain.local
rather than domain.com for your DNS namespace on the server. This helps
provide separation between your internal and external domain namespaces.

As for the Exchange username question, this depends on how your retrieving
your POP3 email. If the users have individual POP3 accounts then you have
the option of pulling down any email for that account and then hand it off
to whatever Exchange mailbox you choose.

However, if you are uing a global mailbox, then you will want the Exchange
username to match the username of the email account that the global mailbox
is retrieving email for. This is because with a global mailbox, the POP3
connector takes off the @domain.com and then matches the username with the
Exchange aliases. If no match is found, the mail will not get delivered.

Let us know if you have any further questions.
