Hi All

Are there any specific issues I should be aware of using
POP3 for incoming mail on our SBS2k Server.

Are their any disadvantages in using POP3 instead of SMTP.
Does POP3 make us any more likely to receive junk mail or
have any other security implications.

Regards ........ Fred

There's a couple of issues with the POP3 connector, most of them are when
you have a catchall pop account and the connector has to distribute them to
each user. Search the group for bcc/cc issues with POP3 and you will find
that there's a glitch in the Matrix ;-)

Yes... You can download messages at 15min intervals (not less), it is not
real-time like SMTP. The glitchs that I already mentioned are also bad.
Susan in a post yesterday was stating that she has seen that some messages
can have problems with headers and the POP3 connector fails to retrieve
them, or something to that extent (I haven't seen this personally). IMO, it
only works well for a limited number of users... after that you will need
SMTP.

IMHO, I would try to use SMTP if I you can... then use POP3 if there's no
other option. (Of course... then Mark will start arguing that's he would do
it the other way around ;-)... but like I said that's "IMHO")

AFAIK, No more junk mail... just about the same.

Actually being on SMTP gives you more tools against SPAM like blacklist lookup
and all that that you cannot do with Pop.

Good point Susan !!!

Moreover, for using any (that I know of) exchange anti-spam 3rd party
programs you will need SMTP. My original thought was based on the actual
account... something like "message received-message in outlook".

On the other hand... some ISPs provide anti-spam solutions for their POP3
accounts.
