Old SBS 2000 due for replacement had sys vol drive crach. Tape drive also 5+
years old. Got back all required data but Exch Info Store was unstable and
would't mount. Isinteg -p was last resort and it worked. Store mounts and I
can see all the old mailboxes. Of course new user accounts are not
associating themselves to same mailbox nave in the store (they create a
second mailbox with same name). By the way email in/out is working fine.

Now for problem (symptoms):

I can view all mailboxes (old and new) in system manager ... mailbox store
but when I right click an old mailbox, reconnect is unavailable (dimmed)

Next thought was to use exmerge to extract to pst and then import back in.
However exmerge only lists (shows access to new mailboxs and none of the old
mailboxes).

Tried KB 262054 to reset security on mailboxes. No luck

Thanks from a tired admin

Did you Run Cleanup Agent (First Storage Group | rt. click on 'Mailboxes' |
Run Cleanup Agent), then try to reconnect?

seems the OP has not 'restored' AD, he has created a new install (including
recreation of users) and restored his data, which, from the sounds, included
a 'dirty shutdown' Exchange store (ie. from files rather than Exchange
backup).

My head's a bit fuzzy at the moment, long day yesterday, but he needs to
connect the old mailboxes to the new users. Note: I would probably use a
temp user to connect to the old mailbox, leave the new user's mailbox
intact, merge old and new using either Outlook or Exmerge.

The good news is that I don't think 'Mailbox Cleanup' will delete his
'disconnected' mailboxes, not sure though.

Process is something along the lines of create user Tempmail as a non mail
enabled user, connect 'Mailbox - Joe Smith (old)' to Tempmail user,
permission the mailbox so that user Joe Smith (new) (if you want to merge
using Outlook) or Admin (if you want to use Exmerge) can access it , merge
mail, disconnect 'Mailbox - Joe Smith (old)' from Tempmail user, connect
'Mailbox Sally Simpson (old) to Tempmail user, etc...

Merv was right. Mailbox cleanup put mailboxs in a state that I could reconnect.

SG was righter - I just ran a test on one mailbox to exmerge out to a pst
after creating a dummy user. Worked great.

Thanks to both.
