Approximately every 5 minutes, in the application event log we are receiving
the following error, on a Win 2K SBS standalone server, running SP4.

Event ID 1000 Source USERENV

Windows cannot access the registry information at
\\domainname.co.uk\sysvol\domainname.co.uk\Policies\
{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\Machine\registry.pol
with (1231).

Error 1231 indicates that the network location cannot be reached - yet this
is a standalone server that is only used for RAS and Printing services.

Hamish,

Have you seen the article

290647 Event ID 1000, 1001 Is Logged Every Five Minutes in the Application
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290647

"This issue may occur if you assign improper permissions to the
%SystemRoot%\Winnt\Sysvol folder or when you assign improper groups to
Bypass Traverse Checking User Rights Assignment. Additionally, if the
sysvol share permissions are too restrictive, the issue will occur".

Also, specific to the error 1231

258960 More Than 15 IP Addresses Assigned to Server Causes Active
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=258960

"This behavior is caused by a buffer in Lmhsvc.dll that is limited to hold
up to 15 IP addresses only".

This was to have been addressed in W2K SP2.
