    - Preventing users downloading software I have just installed my first SBS 2000, and everything is fine. We often have temporary staff working on site who need access to the internet a part of their work, but a couple of them are downloading software and adding mesaging services etc. Is there a way SBS can restrict these downloads through the security or user settings - we have roaming profiles and so other options require far more work.     - Error Logs Showing Blackhole Hi, have some bizzare happenings in my ISA server log files. Certain address' keep appearing as blocked noticeably, 169.254.82.127 The IPPEXTD Logfile shows that the port is 137 and the protocol is UDP. Have checked on the guardian website amongst others and it appears that the servers belong to Blackhole. Not entirely clear what this means.     - 2nd sql server server I'm running Small Business Server 2000 but I need to move my SQL server database onto its own box. Purchasing all needed licenses, can I add a second server to my domain to act as a SQL server only. It will not have any rights/responsibilities for the domain... it won't be a BDC.     - the 15 minute pop equation I just don't understand what the problem is. WHY do people wish to reduce the pop connector collection time? Well, actually, NO, that's not the question. The question is more like 'WHY do people put so much effort into reducing the pop connector retrieval interval?'. With maybe a corollary question of 'WHY is it so damned important?'. I was dealing with a company for tech support today, the guy emailed me some notes. As we receive via SMTP no POP connector delay was involved. While I was on the phone I heard him reading the email, he suggested he was forwarding it to me and I could hear him typing as he asked me to pause while I was giving him my email address, he then suggested 'you should get it soon' so I'm supposing he had actually hit the 'send' button at this time. I also called someone else for support yesterday and went through a similar scenario. Both emails were simple text messages. One arrived inside the 15 minutes, the other took 3 hours. One was from Trend Micro, the other was from Microsoft. This is the nature of internet email. An old quote about internet email suggests '90% gets delivered inside a few minutes, 5% takes a couple of days, 5% goes into the big pop box in the sky and no-one knows why.' I also receive via SMTP at home. If the girl next door emailed me I would receive it with minimal delay. If she expected me to get off my ass and knock on her door within 15 minutes she better be offering something better than dinner to fix her computer. I just don't understand what the frenzy is. On the other hand, there are very good reasons why after attempting POP collection once a short delay should occur before another pop collection is attempted. Many mail systems (and I'm probably talking *nix here, particularly *nix mail server farms) 'lock' the mailbox during delivery, if you attempt to access the mailbox before the lock is released it will error. The previous POP conversation can be complete but because the server is handling thousands of requests and also doing it's own housekeeping the mailbox may still be locked. I'm not sure but I think the lock exists to eradicate the chance of duplicate delivery. ie. (if the mailbox lock was not implemented) popconversation1 'HI, any new mail?' popconversation1 'Yep, sure is, 1*10MB message' popconversation1 'give it to me baby' Transfer starts popconversation2 'HI, any new mail?' popconversation2 'Yep, sure is, 1*10MB message' popconversation2 'give it to me baby' Transfer starts some time later more pop conversations get initiated and we've got more transfers of the same message which eventually may end. The client then has multiple copies of the same message which transferred slowly because they all happened at the same time,,, and gets rather confused what to do with them. Just my take on the issue. I must be 'in a mood'. IF your users DEMAND immediate reception of mail tell them the best you can do is a permanent IP and SMTP delivery, which may result in delays of several minutes to several days, but won't include an additional 14 minutes and 59 seconds.     - Restoring Exchange 2000 to new SBS hardware We have just bought a new RAID server to replace our existing IDE SBS 2000 server and so far i've managed to replicate the Active Directory info to a temporary Windows 2000 server, taken it offline, and replicated it to our new server using the exact same machine name. I've managed to seize the FSMO roles and can get an existing workstation to log on to both the old and new servers, but i'm having problems installing Exchange 2000 back on to the new server. On running the installation file from the third SBS CD, i initially got the error message:- The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services" cannot be assigned the action "Install" because: A server object for this server ("SERVERNAME") already exists in the Administrative Group "first administrative group". You must either remove this server object before installing, or run setup with the "DisasterRecovery" switch if you are attempting to recover this server. On looking at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298068 , i've attempted to run the setup.exe /disasterrecovery command, but i get this error instead:- Please use the Exchange Administration Snap-in to ensure you have a valid Exchange Server Object for this server for which you are running Setup in recovery mode.     - Documents returns to its previous folder Hi all. Server -> SBS 2000 Clients -> Windows 2000 Profissional Some users on this network told me that for example: 1) they create a document on a folder 2) they move that document to another folder 3) the next time they log in, the document is in 1) state ( like that 2) never had happened ) Any ideas/suggestions why is this happening?     - Logon Scripts - Help Please!! Hi all I would like to map a drive and also make sure that the My Documents Folder is pointing to a Network Location. Please can somebody advise me how to do this or where to find some information on how to create logon scripts.     - Cant open Microsoft Network on the server! Hi, I posted this about three weeks ago but didnt seem to get any answers, hopefully someone else could have a look and see if they can come up with something?. My problem is that I cant browse The Microsoft Network from my server. Every time i try to access the domain it produces an error saying it cant find the domain?. I've made sure that IsDomainMaster is set in the registry and done several fixes according to several posts relating to this problem however i still cant browse?.     - Exchange - Missing Attachments Hi there, We are using small business server 2000 as our email server and I am having a small problem with it. When a certain customer sends us emails with attachments, the attachments are being stripped out of the emails by exchange. e.g They sent us an email with an attachment yesterday. When I looked in the logs for the smtp virtual server on exchange it said the message was ~53K. When the user looked at the message in Outlook it said the message was 4K and the attachment was missing. I assume there is something slightly awry in the format of the emails from this particular user that is upsetting exchange when it is processing the email. Has anyone had this problem and any suggestions as to how I might solve ? Is there a way of capturing what the smtp server sees for an email before it flows into the bowels of exchange never to be seen again in it's original smtp format ? To work around this problem we have been having this customer send email to people's hotmail/yahoo mail accounts. They don't seem to have a problem with the email attachments from this customer.     - XP workstation long time to login! Our office just got 3 new workstations with W. XP Pro. I got them to join the domain SBS2000 without any problem, BUT! it takes over 1 1/2 minute for the user to login (Applying settings.) with W2K Pro. It takes only 4 seconds. Please help!!!     - internet explorer canor find server or dns server error hello first time user.....thanks in advance have a client...sbs2000 installed...was active directory until i changed it to workgroup...had 6 users connecting to internet via a single external modem connection off the server...now cannot get it working from users or server....at the server....connects to isp...can ping to ip but not a name...ie www.microspft.com....cannot figure it out...placed tech service call without success....was advised (not by microsoft) to blow away server and reinstall....hesitant to do so...any idreas?     - Distribution list/Public Folder On one of our web sites, we have a Q&A page for customers to post questions which generates an email to the appropriate support person(s). Initially I was going to set it up so that these emails would be directed to a public folder's email address. My only problem is that if 3 (or 5 or 50) people have access to this public folder, and one person responds, how do the other people know that a response has been sent?     - Additional firewall in front of ISA? I'd appreciate a show of hands from the experts here - Do you recommend installing a separate firewall device in between a dual-homed SBS2000 machine running ISA and the Internet? I am very impressed with ISA, and support 8 SBS sites without the 2nd firewall, but I am becoming paranoid that if somehow ISA is compromised, the entire network will be open for the world to see.     - Disk Defragmenter Could not initialize My SBS2000 server has a hardware Raid-5 disk system, 2 logical drives. Logical drive 1 - C: (basic) & F: (basic), Logical drive 2 - E: (dynamic) I can run w2k disk defrag on drive E: & F: without a problem, when i try to run it on drive C: i get Disk defragmenter could not initialize message & refuses to defrag it, Why?????     - Time Server I've used the Time service before, however it appears that at some point the time server I was using changed IP's or gave up time serving. So when I went in to fiddle around with the time service again, I decided to try and set the switch "w32tm -period" to a different value than the default. Trouble is that after I type the command (ie: w32tm -period 3) it just sits there. Doesn't return me to the comand line, doesn't provide any feedback, just sits like its hung during the command.     - VPN and ISA Server We have setup a VPN by right clicking Network Configuration and choosing the setup VPN option in ISA Server. We then go into active directory and right click a users name and select the profile tab and in here check the radio button which says allow remote dial in. Therefore our VPN should work and clients who have dial in enabled should be able to access the network remotely via VPN. We want to use routed IP and have purchased 10 IP Address' from our ISP. What i need to know is do the leased IP address' go into the LAT? Also if there is any advice anyone can give on how best to use/configure VPN etc. i would be much oblidged.     - Post Exchange SP3 Problem Hi all I have scanned recent posts with no avail! I ran the exchange SP3 (then SBS SP1a) and things have not worked since! I cannot start any of the Exchange services and most of the menus are greyed out! (Mount Store etc). I've tried a couple of things that I've found using Google but all without success.     - Frontpage can't publish Can anyone talk me through how to get Frontpage (2000) to publish? SBS2000 (all patches & ISA used) via router on static IP on adsl - client pc can browse internet fine, however any attempt to use Frontpage to either upload site or to open site on-line fails (just sits there appearing to be logging on, yet nothing happens).     - Assigned application is not installing Dear all, when I assign an application through SBS server management console, assign application to computer. when the user logs to domain and it says one application is ready to install, do you want to install or postpone, when I click on install it says " administrator access requires to install this application" why pls anybody can help me? Actually this is a small addin program to outlook2000(attachment option.exe)and it should install under a specific username. This template have several permission settigs for every folder.     - server cannot communicate using computer names Hello microsoft experts. My new win2000 server suddenly won't communicate using computer names. I can ping it from all workstations. The server accesses the internet thru the same nic card fine. tcp/ip seems OK. 'computers near me' cannot see the server. And 'my network places' cannot see the workstations. My user accounts still work locally. How do I verify the functionality of the microsoft protocols?     - Exchange / Outllook Synchronization On my laptop for some reason after upgrading from Outlook 2002 to Outlook 2003 offline folders do not synchronize after clicking Send/Receive (or pressing F9) any more and neither do they automatically synchronize on exit.     - Error when first logging on to the domain Issue is user can't log on to server's domain directly. 1) Either from a cold boot, reboot or stand by user can't log on when the patch cable is in the NIC card. Error "There is not account for you on this domain" or You user name and password are incorrect or Cap lock is on try again without Cap lock". 2) If you take the patch cable out of the NIC card the user can log on without changing the domain to local workstation. 3) After the user is on the system attach the patch cable and he is connected to the network. Things I've done: 1) Replace the NIC driver 2) Tired a different NIC card 3) User can log on directly from another system so I don't think it is his profile. Any suggestion?     - Backup Exec and admin "rights". Need admin rights to backup a directory? Built a new sbs2000 server. A basic file access question. Q: Does Backup Exec 9 need "administrator" rights to a folder on the hard drive to back it up? I have 22 users and I set up a temporary drop box for each with sharing and security with their names only, no admin rights. Inheritied permissions are off. This is a temporary solution and I'll explain. By giving users access only, if someone sits at the server, unless they know how to assign admin rights, they cannot see each other's folders. Access is denied. For now. The server is not locked down yet and anyone can access the server's console. The company owner wants the server logged in as Administrator for now until she learns some of the features on her own. This is the small company's first server. Security will be tightened down when a security policy is in place and files are transferred to the server. For now, the owner wants the server left unlocked at the console.     - SBS2K3 Fax problem and Exchange question Hi, I'm studying the SBS2K3 stuff, and now I bumped into two issues. First one is the fax. I managed to configure it, but for some reason what happens when I try to send a fax it goes to the fax console outbox and stays there. It claims the job status as "busy". This happens to all fax numbers. I do believe that the fax modem is correctly set up as I can issue AT commands over hyperterminal. Haven't tried the reception part yet... Second one is with Exchange. I want to set up a user, that would have a totally different email address than other users (ie, if most users have userA@mycompany.com, this one would be UserB@someothercompany.net). I have added an smtp account for each user @gonedigital.net so that external mail will be seen to come from our external addresses however if I set these gonedigital.net address's to primary my pop3 connectors no longer deliver mail to the users.     - Outlook delegate error I have a user (Bob) set up as a delegate for another user's (Steve) calendar. When ever Bob tries to open Steve's calendar, he gets a "Unable to display the folder. The calendar folder could not be found." Both Bob and Steve are located at a remote site which uses a router to create a VPN connection to the SBS 2000 server. Bob has logged off his system and logged back in and the same error comes up. They are both using Outlook XP.     - TS Local Log on Issues Hi All, There is something I obviously do not understand about local log ons to a SBS TS Server. I thought Domain Controller user rights were an umbrella policy over the whole show. I thought Domain user rights were for the Domain itself I thought Local rights were for each individual user or machine. Why then, when I add a user (or the group he/she is in) to the Local Log On policy, the user is still denied access. Can someone please explain to me what I am missing?
