DNS Issue
This problem has been the bane of my life for a quite a
while.
I have a server with an internal ip address of 10.0.99.2
But when it dials up the the internet service providor it
changes it to 10.0.99.38.
This stops the clients talking to it. I have flushed the
dns and deleted all entires to this bogus ip address in
the DNS manager. I have checked the dial up settings and
have unticked the "Register this connection address in
DNS" but this doesnt seem to have helped.

Corrupt ISA - Heeelp
Hi All
I installed some new RAM into our server, and upon reboot
it blue screened. I took the RAM out and rebooted but now
it will not start the firewall service - it says a file is
not found in the client sets.
I cannot seem to restore this, or find any way of getting
things going. ICW fails on the ISA bit.
My backup (Arcserve) seems to have been hit too (huh!)
Other things do not seem to bad, (Exchange is OK, but
cannot get outside of course.)
Can I reload this from CD - or has anyome any ideas to
help?

Hi , I have a new SBS server that has 2 nic's and seems to work fine unless
I have to do a restart. After doing a reboot or shutdown the server comes

SBS Limited to (2) Processors?
I loaded the SBS2003 RC into a new server with 4 xeon processors.
Only 4 were recognized and I read that only (2) are supported. Is
this also true for SBS2000 that only (2) processors are supported?
Also I know the more memory the better but is there a point where you

CAL install order
Just purchased a new server. The old server had 1 5-pack
CAL installed. I attempted to add this 5-pack to the new
server and received the message to call Microsoft for a
password. I did not realize they are open 24/7.
Therefore, I went ahead and installed 2 brand new 5-pack
CAL's that were just purchased. They installed fine. My
problem is that now the old server's 5-pack CAL will not
install even with the password from Microsoft. This is
because of the install order. It was originally installed
as the 1st (and only) CAL pack on the old server. Now,
since I already installed 2 others, it is the 3rd one
being installed. It is my understanding that CAL's need
to be re-installed in the exact order that they were
originally installed. Anyone have a work around for
this? Really dont want to pay the $250 for support when
another 5-Pack can just be purchased for under $200 and
solve my problem. Thanks! Tag: Error Installing ISA SP1. Tag: 135751

Default save as location
Hi
I am trying to set up my system to limit saving to the
local computer in an attempt to force users to save to the

I have hidden C: and removed my documents from the desktop

One thing that I cant get my head around is a way to
change the default save as folder when running any

click on save it will come up with the default folder as
my documents.
Does anyone know a way to change this default folder
saving location for every application?

DNS Question
Hello,
Is there a way to program my DNS so that when an internal client opens
a browser and types in an address, that it looks to an internal DNS
entry before going out to the external IPS's DNS table?
I"m using a firewall that will not permit internal clients to browse a
website that is also on our lan. They state that an Internal Caching
DNS Server will resolve this if clients are pointed to it.
I think that the SBS DNS is that caching server but I'm not sure how
to set it up so that it will be looked at upon a web request before
going oout over the gateway to the ISP's DNS.

Shared Modem service on clients
I posted the following post below earlier, with no success
in replies. However, here is more information.
I put in a temporary HDD and installed Win2000 pro SP4.
Configured and joined the PC to the domain. Then I
installed the modem sharing client, and got the same
results. The Virtual COM port does not show up and I
cannot use it in Hyperterminal or any other program.
At this stage, I am inclined to think that the network
adaptor is the problem, since I have tried this on 3 of
the same type of PCs. We are using an MSI board with on
board Realtek 10/100 network adaptor.
I am about to try a USB network adaptor, but it will not
provide me with the full 100 mbit.

I installed the Shared Modem Services as per instructions

I stopped and started the serial redirector (serrdr).
But I cannot see COM3 when adding a modem. In

Exchange & HP Digital Sender
We have an HP Digital Sender in our remote office that we use to send
PDF's back to staff members in our main office. It's worked like a
champ for a year and a half plus. Last week it became unable to find
the exchange server and I've been unable to get it running across the
WAN. The HP support people have told me that running the sender across
a VPN isn't supported and that's where we are stuck.
Right now the Sender is configured to use the VPN's gateway as it's
own gateway. We've also tried the gateway for the SBS server with no
luck. The remote office uses 192.169.0.x for it's IP addresses and the
main office uses 192.168.10.x.
I can ping the sender from the main office. The remote office can
access Exchange port 25 across the WAN and we sent a test email using
Telnet with no problems. I can get to the Sender's web server from the
main office. Everything we could test we did and they all passed.
Does anyone have any experience running Sender's this way? This is a
valuable piece of office equipment for us and I don't have clue at
this point on how to get it to find Exchange again. Thanks! Tag: Error Installing ISA SP1. Tag: 135691
restore Exchange Information Store

SUS 1.1 - Group Policy for Computer config??
Am setting up SUS on server for first time, and am a bit foggy about the
Group Policy side of things.
I'm happy doing GP to restrict user's activity - I just open up Users and
Groups; make a new OU (e.g. Sales); associate a new GP Object with it,
having edited the GPO to restrict the User configuration (e.g. no access to
Control Panel); finally, move users into that OU.
Where I am confused is... how to do the same thing - i.e. create GPO and
apply - for specific Computers as opposed to specific Users. (The SUS
settings need to be associated with Computers, rather than Users I guess).

PCs on network having pop3 issues
Hi,
I'm running an SBS server with Exchange (using pop3 connector to ecternal
ISP) and ISA. The situation is slightly unusual as the org I'm working for
rents out physical space and and in some cases inet connectivity to business
clients in their building. The business clients PCs do not join the domain,
but they are on the same subnet, dhcp scope, etc as the server. They get
inet through secureNAT and web proxy (I haven't tried putting the fw client
on them yet, will it work if they don't join domain/have usr accnt?), but do
not access email through our exchange server. Someone else did mistakenly
set up their email accounts on the pop3 connector but I have prevented the
connector from downloading from those accounts. There are other client PCs
that belong to the org I'm working for that do join the domain and access
externally hosted email addresses via Exchange & pop3 connector.
The problem is that the non-domain/non-exchange clients are not receiving
their email. They appear to be downloading mail, the progress bar goes and
the now downloading messagenumber increments, no messages appear in the
inbox though. At the 100% mark the process fails giving a time out error but
there is no evidence of the network being slow/congested. Most of these
clients are using OL2002 and using the "test pop3 account" feature in the
"setup email accounts" gets ticks all accross the board and telneting into
the external pop3 server from those machines also works. This is happening
with at least 2 ISPs so they problem is not at their end. There are packet
filters to allow pop3 in ISA. The non-domain machines were getting their
email fine for a couple of weeks before this started to happen. I was
redoing the pop3 connector accounts to ensure some of these accounts weren't
being picked up by our server, using the internet connections wizard, at
about the time that the issue surfaced.

SBS as VPN Server
Hi all,
I'm needing to configure SBS 2000 as a VPN Server, and have read
Q320697 (Turn on and Configure Inbound VPN Access in SBS2000) - but
it's not very clear. I understand how to configure the server itself,
but it doesn't really say how to configure the client. It does
describe a couple of steps under "troubleshooting", but nowhere else,
and even then, these steps are unclear at best - ie, "Configure the
TCP/IP settings on the client to be on the same subnet as the SBS
Server's external NIC". What if the client has a broadband modem, and
doesn't have TCP/IP settings? What if the NIC on the client has to be
on the same subnet as it's own router to connect through a router to
the internet?
Can anyone give me a quick rundown of how to do this?
Also, is it possible to set the VPN Server to accept inbound VPN
Connections, and then use a VPN Client to connect to it (ie, the
Microsoft L2TP/IPSec VPN Client ?) This would take away a lot of the
stress...

A teenager accused of launching an attack on one of the
US's biggest ports has claimed flaws in Windows allowed

The art of self-defense in network security
You know that feeling you get when you first step out
of an elevator in a building you've never been in --
a little disoriented, not quite sure where you are or
where you need to be? If someone were going to attack
you, that would be the perfect time. The same holds
true in cyberspace. Attackers are most effective when
your situational awareness is low.

Through the Fog: Who should protect you from viruses?
Take a second not to blame hackers, Microsoft or
the guy down in IT - the answer could be closer
to home. Quocirca analyst Dale Vile considers some
of the weaknesses of traditional protection from
malware... Computer viruses are nothing new. They
have been causing irritation and in some cases
devastation for many years. Yet we sometimes seem
as far away from controlling the problem as ever.

Bosses are the weakest link
Senior managers may recognise the risks of lax IT
security, but they seldom practice what they preach.
A new report to be published today from the Economist
Intelligence Unit has found that, while board members
see security as one of the top issues facing their
companies, their knowledge of best practices is
lacking.

Bluetooth has security gaps
A report released this week by digital security
firm @Stake argues that devices that are equipped
with the short-range wireless technology, Bluetooth,
could be easily attacked. The report highlights
experiments showing that devices boasting the
technology can be detected easily and, in some
cases, that personal data from the gadgets can
be downloaded.

"Don't lose sight of security. Security is a state of being,
not a state of budget. He with the most firewalls still does
not win. Put down that honeypot and keep up to date on your patches.
Demand better security from vendors and hold them responsible.
Use what you have, and make sure you know how to use it properly
and effectively."
