FIX: SUS Installation disrupts Exchange public folders on SBS 2000
When installing SUS on SBS 2000, it turns out IIS Lockdown, which the SUS
runs by default, disrupts Exchange public folders, resulting in:
1) Folder permissions disappearing in the folders properties via
Outlook
2) Folders not being viewable in Exchange System Manager, producing the
error message: ID 80040e19 Object is no longer available
In order to rectify this problem you must manually edit the file
urlscan.ini, which can be found at: C:\winnt\system32\inetsrv\urlscan\
Make the following changes as appropriate and then restart the IIS Admin
service form the services.msc console (warning: This will restart Exchange
as well, so be sure your users are logged off)

SBS - Terminal Server name change
I have an office environment running SBS 2000 along with two terminal
services servers: one server is a w2k box in application mode and the other
is a newly acquired w2003 box also running in application mode.
Everything works great. Yesterday, the boss asked me if we can change the
names on the terminal servers. It seems we have a print application (Encad)
that only runs on w2k machines and not win2003. So, with this in mind, the
boss would like me to move all our access databases on the w2k machine to
the new win2003 machine and change (swap) the names of the terminal servers.
My question is: Can I change the names on the terminal servers with
minimal problems? I think aside from changing the name, I'd have to update
the IP address within SBS2000 DNS table plus update any remote users who
are connecting via a name vs. an IP address to the appropriate terminal
server.
I am not a networking expert, so I told my boss the best thing to do at
the moment would be to not change the names on the terminal servers. And
that I'd try to find out if it is at all possible. Can someone point me in
the right direction?
Thank you,

SQL Server on SBS 2K
I have just got around to installing SQL, but I have found that there is
only Windows Authentication only, not SQL.
From the Server properties in Ent. Manager, I changed it, hit OK, but the
setting didn't stick.
Is there something wrong, or is this the nature of the SBS version?
Thanks

I have a new sbs server and I setup the users, and put them in the specific groups I wanted them to be in. My problem is one of my users I put in the admins group, but when I tried to install something on there local machine when logged on to the domain. I keep getting an error saying I don't have privledge to do this. I looked around but I can't find where to set the policies or whatever to allow installs on the local machines. Thanks for the help. Very Slow Client Computer - part 2
Hi all!
( I'm posting this on a new thread, because I guess this subject is important and other people will have a check list ).
Server -> SBS 2000, with all the updates
The "problematic" client computer -> Windows 2000 Professional, with all the updates
On this client, I've checked:
1] Virus - there are no know virus
2] Network properties are equal to other client computer
2.1] Primary DNS server address is pointing to the server - Thanks Toni! -.
3] I've re-joined the computer to the domain
4] When copying some amount of data ( 300 to 400 MB ) from server to client is Ok - so I guess the problem is not on the network card.
5] I've run ScanDisk - no errors on disk
6] I've changed the network cable
7] If I log in with another user on this computer, the problem is the same.
8] I've looked on Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs from something strange and there is no such a program - Thanks Toni! -.
When I click on a folder, it takes too long to open it ( more than 40 seconds to 1 minute ). When the computer logs in, it takes too long and also to log off.
I've logged in security mode with network support, and the folders opens quickly. What should I conclude on this?
( Jonh - thanks to your reply to the thread "Very Slow Client Computer". My Win2k CD has a problem with it on some file. I have to borrow a CD. )
Thanks a lot in advance.
Best regards,

Strange exchange behaviour with space lost over weekend
This is weird and has happened over last 3 weekends since I rebuilt the
server to incorporate a hardware raid controller into the SBS server. It is
a Compaq ML310.
On Monday morning space used by exchange increases by approx 3 GB. These
are caused by an increase in log files and then after the Monday night
backup the space is recovered as the log files are deleted. As stated above
this has happened the last 3 weeks.
This in itself does not cause a problem BUT the size of the exchange backup
is increasing by about a GB per week (the difference between the exchange
backup on Friday as compared with Monday) so the backup (using latest
Veritas BackupExec) now requires tape spanning. I presume this is because I
am retaining deleted mail for ? days after user deletion.
The server runs the latest Norton Corporate with Mail Security AV and all
clients have Norton installed and configured correctly. All definitions are
up-to-date.
Has anyone any idea what is going on and how to fix?
Thanks

Export/Copy Exchange User Mailboxes and Public Folders
Okay, I'm not getting any suggestions and maybe I'm not wording what I need to do correctly. I need to re-install Exchange to try to fix a problem we are having
I want to export all user mailboxes and public folders so that we don't loose any e-mails, contacts, public folders, etc.
My question is, how do I export these items? I've gone into Exchange System Manager, clicked on Servers, clicked on <server name>, and then clicked on First Storage Group. There are two sub-categories under First Storage Group. They are Mailbox Store and Public Folder Storage. I've right-clicked on both of these sub-categories, and there is a "Export List" option. Is this what I want to do or is this not correct.
Please help, I need to get this done ASAP

Access Denied
I have a problem with my Server SBS2000 SP3.
Sometimes some users can't use (open) some files because they got a Message
like this: "Access to FILE.TXT is denied". I tried to open that file and i
get the same msg.
Sometimes inside an application like VisualFox, users cant open their
datafiles and got a message like this
"Access to file facturas.dbf is denied. File is in use"
I checked the Open Files in the SBS Admin Console, (Inside of SBS Console -
Computer Mgmt Local - System Tools -Shared Folders) and theres no one using
those files.
I reboot the server and the clients and the problem continues.
Is there a tool where i can find and kill which Proccess or user or
something is accessing/using/locking some file in the Server?
Thanks in advance.

Shared SMTP Domain Name
I have a SBS-2000 fully setup and everything was working fine ...
A week ago, I tried to follow Microsoft Article # 321721 to Share SMTP Address Space for the Company (company.com) to enable the e-mail communication to a remote office which has another SBS-2000 fully configured as bothe offices use the same @company.com address ...
At Office-1, I followed Method-1, which involved adding a new SMTP Connector and adjusting what Exchange 2000 should Authoratitive for, it didn't work correctly .... And I wasn't able to send any emails from Office-1 to Office-2 ... I went back with the settings to keep everything as it was before ...
At Office-2, I decided to used the Second Method, which is simply to add to the Default SMTP Virtual Server the Mail Host (mail.company.com) that should handle unresolved addresses ... It worked fine and I was able to send without any problems from Oddice-2 to Office-1 ...
So, I decided to do this method at Office-1 .... It doesn't want to work ... No NDR messages ... Anf I can see under the Queues of the Default SMTP Virtual Server a Connector saying
"SmallBusiness SMTP connector (SMTP Connector - Remote delivery)"
The messages are just hanging there ...
I don't know what;s wrong with the SBS-2000 at Office-1 ... Is there any thing that I forget to correct in when I rolled-back the steps of Method-1 ...
Appreciate your help ...

Exabyte VXA 2e Tape Drive AND Veritas 9.0/9.1 not good with SBS2003......
This is more of an FYI.
I have been working at this client for over a year and the idea was to set up a nice little network with a Corporate server and a Financial server. I have WSBS2003 on the Corporate box and W2000 Server on the other
I had purchased the VXA drive with the understanding that we would be able to back up all data on both servers with ease
I found out today that using Veritas 9.0 or 9.1 will not work with Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Standard on the VXA Tape Drive if you want to use the Remote Agent. Basically I cannot back up ANY data from the W2000 box...at all
Veritas management told me that directly and apologized for the situation their technical folks put me in. We even purchased the Remote Agent license and a WHOLE bunch of tapes just so we could do this
Now I'm not saying the product doesn't work, in fact, it works very well when I back up the WSBS2003 box...alone
So if you are looking for a small business solution like mine, you may want to look at some other options. Oh yeah....does anyone have any suggestions for me as far as Tape Drives that DO work on this kind of a setup
Thanks for listening! Tag: Enabling audio coneversation and video conferences Tag: 155842

Re-install Exchange in SBS2000
I am going to re-install Exchange in SBS2000 because I cannot get our faxes to route through e-mail anymore. I have no idea how to fix it, and no one in this forum seems to know how to fix it either since a previous post has had no replies to it
I have not re-installed anything on SBS2000 before which is why I am posting. I assume I will need to go into Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Exchange through the Microsoft Small Business Server listing in Add/Remove Programs. Then, I assume I will reboot, and then go back into Add/Remove Programs, and install Exchange from the Microsoft Small Business Server listing in Add/Remove Programs
Does this sound correct? Is there a better/preferred way to accomplish this? If I want to save all the e-mails we currently have in our users inboxes, how would I do that? Is there anything else that I need to be aware of in order to do this

Outlook deployment
Problem:
On a clients machine, Outlook attempts to reinstall on every reboot. If the
original client CD is inserted, then a wrong disc message appears, if I
point to the server copy, same problem. Any ideas?
The client previously had the correct version of outlook installed, but the
server was stolen, a new server acquired, and this problem has existed ever
since.
During the installation of the replacement server, outlook did not get
installed - no idea why (see below) even though I did the install. It just
seemed to skip over that step. To 'remedy' this I copied the issue CD down
to the clientapps folder, but of course I have no idea where to put the CD
key. Could this be related? How do I fix this?
FYI: SBS2K was deployed with a minor problem: the automated install claimed
that the system volume was not an NTFS volume (which it was) so after
searching the KB and trying things, I manually did a dcpromo then re-ran the
SBS setup and all appeared "OK" (obviously not). The system volume is a RAID
1 drive on SATA.

DNS lookup problem?
Hi folks,
I set up a SBS server (many years ago) and stupidly assigned the
client's website address as the domain for Active Directory (ie
instead of assigning a name such as foobar.local, I used
foobar.com.au).
The issue is that the website/mailserver is hosted offsite - when
setting the clients to refer to the SBS-DNS server on the network,
clients cannot access the 'external' website or mailserver (ie
www.foobar.com.au or mail.foobar.com.au). When setting the client to
refer to the ADSL router this problem goes away, but WinXP clients
take forever to log on.
I assume this problem can go away if I add a pointer or something to
the SBS-DNS server? Can anybody 'point' (ha!) me in the right
direction??
Cheers,
Patrick. Tag: Enabling audio coneversation and video conferences Tag: 155813
changing server name
I recently got a new sbs 2003 server and XP workstations. After the I setup the server and logged in with the XP workstations I noticed that the login was very slow about 2-3 minutes to complete. I changed the name of the server and when I did that the login was almost instant. But after that I received event errors about sharepoint services.... I am guessing it was just because I change the server name. My questions is could changing the computer name really speed up the login process that much, and was just changing it by going to my computer then properties and network id the right way to change it? mail delivery, same domain, 2 different sbs-locations

office 1 uses this mailaliasses:

office 2 uses this mailaliasses:

E-mail of both offices are stores in 2 separated mailboxes at an
external ISP, one for office1 and one for office2. Each of the
mailservers at both offices retreive their mail from their particular
mailbox.
at office 1, the LAN-domain is named: mydomain.be
at office 2, the LAN-domain is named: office2.local
At office 1, I have some problems with e-mail delivery. when an e-mail
is send to alias1, which contains also an emailaddress of office 2,
then the mailserver of office1 reply with a 'Mail not delivered' for
the mailaddress of office2, 'cause there's no local mailbox at office1
for an e-mail of office2.
I have this problem at office1 cause the domain is called mydomain.be
At office2 i do not have any problem with the same situation, cause
the domainname has another name then mydomain.be
At office1, I forced the Virtual SMTP-server now to resend
undeliverable e-mails outside. Now there isn't anymore the mailerror
(Mail undeliverable), but now at office2, they receive e-mail twice.
How can I resolve this at office1 ?

Problem deploying Outlook 2k2 from SBS2k
Lately we have been having trouble installing Outlook 2002 to new client
workstations. (And a couple where upgrading Office 97 to Office 2000
over-wrote Outlook with 2000.) It sets there for a long time claimimg to be
installing, then asks for a reboot of the workstation, and after reboot it
offers to do the same thing again. It seems there must be something wrong in
the ClientApps folder on our SBS2000 server. Is there a way to re-install it
other than re-installing SP1? I assume I can't just copy the files from the
CD to the ClientApps\Outlook2002 folder.
Now that I think about it, after a server crash last fall and re-install of
SBS, (reformat, reinstall, rebuild domain and AD, etc) I don't believe it
ever asked for the Product Key, which was different than the original
Outlook/Front Page key that came with SBS. And I don't think we have got it
to install since then, which would seem to confirm that it's not properly
installed to the ClientApps folder. But that brings back the other question,
do I have to re-install SP1 to try to straighten it out?

I have SBS 2000. I purchased a cal pack and was sold a
SBS 2003 pack. I can not install this product key in SBS
2000 as you can in SBS 2003. It keeps asking for me to
insert a disk and run setup. Any ideas? Tag: Enabling audio coneversation and video conferences Tag: 155755

NNTVPSVC
I keep getting Event IDs 420 & 421. Both sources are NNTPSVC. Both
descriptions state that the virtual server 1 has successfully received 0
posts. I believe that this isthe news server that I going to set up but did
not finish. How do I go about disabling this? I just use my ISPs news server
for newsgroups. thanks.

Unable to obtain gateway IP using DHCP
I have to manually enter the gateway IP of our router in the network
properties of each client XP and Win98 machine on the network. Why can't
these clients automatically pick this up through the DHCP server as it does
it's own IP address and the DNS server IP?
Thanks,
