Does anybody know of a roadmap for configuring SBS2000 and 2003 DNS and ISA
services to work with internet services like ZoneEdit that provide a
routable tcp/ip address to servers that are assigned dynamic ip's by ADSL
service providers ??

For example, we have a 2003 SBS server with an ADSL connection to the
internet ... two nics, a 192.x.x.x internal zone, and a 10.x.x.x external
connection to the ADSL router. Our internal domain name is ourname.local,
and we own ourname.net.

We want to run Exchange, web site, and FTP site that can be reached as
ourname.net.

We have already set up the proper connections with ZoneEdit, and are using
DirectUpdate to maintain the current ip address of our server. However when
ZoneEdit tries to connect to our server, we get a message "host=ourname.net
failed - (15533 ) Destination host is unreachable"

This can't be an unusual configuration .. A roadmap with screen shots would
be helpful .. those DNS and ISA tech notes that deal with every possible
contingency and obscure the obvious make my eyes glaze over.

Appreciate all input.

Just a simple PowerUser.

I think you pretty much have done everything... however, I'm confused about
this:

Why ZoneEdit tries to connecto to your server? Do you mean when DirectUpdate
tries to update the IP address on ZoneEdit's DNS servers? Just to be sure...
does the IP gets updated or not?

One time I tried using DirectUpdate through ISA... but when I used the proxy
it didn't work. So, I simply created a packet filter for port 80 outbound
and it worked after that. Maybe that's what you are missing?

so reliability, security, and uptime are NOT important to you? Yes, it CAN
be done but it is poor practice to have a dynamic website on a DSL circuit
(remember upload is like 200k) that is down frequently. What can 1 lost
client cost you? If I lost 1 client, I would lose thousands so I would
never put myself in this position. But, if you are using this for learning
at home, that is a different story.

Jeeze ... for a small 12 user network for a small company .. we are not in
the business of clients, or interested in a web marketing, etc. .. just
want to run Exchange and have our e-mail arrive at our server without paying
the freight for a fixed tcp/ip address.

I know there is a way to make this work, and you do to .. how to do it
should be easy to map out. Reliability is really not an issue .. I am happy
with our ADSL service. Uptime .. same thing as reliability. I don't need
99.9. Security .. we pay a lot now, with firewall, av, antibot, antispam,
on and on.

I know that the correct routable ip is being reported to ZoneEdit, and I
infer that ZoneEdit is trying to confirm that ourname.net is ready and
waiting for messages. DirectUpdate is working fine. I will try your idea
about routing around the proxy. Thnx.

I'll disagree and agree with Mark.

I disagree about not using DDNS. I have used dynamic ip addressing and ddns
services like TZO (not ZoneEdit) for several years without any issues.

I agree, however, that you really do NOT want to be hosting your own web
site on this server. Why? Because of your own comments --- you're a small
company. Why put your company's data at risk like that? Now, I am not saying
you can't run Exchange for email, but don't host your public web site on it.

As far as a roadmap, the best I can suggest is www.smallbizserver.net - and
click on the Network drop down.

What you may try is the old all/all/all rule for ISA -- look at this link -
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=90 - ignore the fact that
it addresses an issue with Quickbooks

In have used ZoneEdit several times... AFAIK there is no need for
comunication between from ZoneEdit to your server. If the IP is being
updated (you can check by performing an NSLookup) then the problem has
nothing to do with ZoneEdit, DDNS or DirectUpdate.

The question is-> Where do you see this error message "host=ourname.net
failed - (15533 ) Destination host is unreachable"??? ZoneEdit control
panel? DirectUpdate? When you try to access the site?

The error message was occurring in the DirectUpdate logs. I interpreted it
as an attempt by ZoneEdit to ping back to my server and receiving an error.
In fact, in DU's Status screen's "Edit IP Detection Settings" I had checked
two boxes and was getting an error from one of the checkip's.

Dumb !

Thank you for your help. It pointed me in the right direction.

I have several clients that are 12 users....that is NOT IMPORTANT. 1 of my
12 user clients is a CPA firm that handles companies that do a minimum of
$20 million in sales per year and revenue for each client is high. So if a
potential client saw their website down or they did not get an email, they
would lose a lot of money.

I am a single person company that does a large annual volume, if I lost a
potential client, that could mean $10k-$20k per year. You are thinking
inside the box. Reliability IS an issue, if you continue to think like that
then you are limiting your potential.
