I have a small network consisting of a server running
SBS2000 and approximately 20 PC running either Windows XP
Pro or Windows 2000 Pro.

For the last few days when I have arrived at the office
in the morning I find I am unable to access the server.
When I look at the server there is a message indicating
that the server has detected a duplicate IP address. If I
reboot the server the problem goes away. This message
also appears on many workstations. I have looked at the
event logs on the server and can see this message
repeated many times over a number of hours but I am
unable to determine when it started. I have now increased
the size of the log file.

I have checked the event logs on several PCs as well and
can see that this problem occurs on and off throughtout
the day with the PCs as well. It occurs only for a few
seconds and then stops.

I am not sure why this is happening and how I can stop it.

Can anybody help?

Thanks

David

Duplicate IP Addresses by rick

Dunno if it helps, but I had a similar problem with the
LAN fixed IPs - kept getting messages saying that a
particular IP was already in use and duplicates would
cause problems, when I knew there was no NIC with that
IP. If I remember it right, it appears that there's a
record of legacy IP state hidden in the IP records and the
duplicate is real but of an unused and obsolete record.

Cheers,

R

Rick, could you please reply to the same thread instead of starting a
new one ?
makes it easier to keep track of what's going on .

Thanks.

David,

Are all devices configured for DHCP? and if not are the "fixed" IP =
addresses set up as exclusions in DHCP?

If not, then DHCP is "handing out" your fixed addresses.

On the desktops from a command prompt type

IPCONFIG /all and review it

also instead of rebooting the server, try:

IPCONFIG /release
IPCONFIG /renew

from the offending desktop(s)
