Shared drive access lost
I have a windows domain with SBS2000 as domain controller
and an old NT Server (v4, sp6a) as a member server. WinXP
clients regularly lose access to a shared drive on the NT
Server. Win98 and Win2000-Pro clients do not lose access.
WinXP clients, on access attempt, get popup window asking
for login credentials. When they respond with username
and password they receive message that "Login
Unsuccessful, user name you typed is the same as the name
you logged in with. That user name has already been
tried. A domain controller cannot be found to verify that
user name."
After user logoff and logon on the XP-client, the user
again has access to the shared drive on the NT Server,
but some minutes later, the access is denied again.

POP3 stopped downloading
I have searched but can't find my problem. The mail is
still at the ISP.
I tried re-running ICW and get an error during the
finalization (where the checkboxes get checked) I will
post the actual error in a minute, but wanted to know if
anyone had an idea.
Had been running great for many months, never a virus,
Trend C/S/M updates hourly, use HFNetChkLT manually to
update each week, daily full backups, no other problems
apparent, no errors in Event Viewer.
Several updates done last weekend, that may be the last
time it worked right.
I'll come back with more info in a few minutes.

Routing through VPN
Hi,
My client cannect via VPN to my SBS and nee to connect to
one of my UNIX machine that is not in the range of local
IP addresse. how can change my routing or firewall setting
to let im go.
My configuration is like :
SBS has A.A.A.A internet adress
SBS has B.B.B.B local address (VPN and vpn clinet in this
range as well)
Unix has A.A.A.A IP address but is not accessible through
internet.
PS: for some software reason I can't change or add IP
address on unix machin

xp pro can't access company folder on server
SBS2000 I have 4 xp machines that when you log in to
server the shared folders on server are available, after
a while thay are no longer available and have to reboot
to have access again. The mapped drives are ok but can't
access company shared fold.
WHY?????

Increasing volume size on Hardware RAID-1 array
We have Win2K Server with two hard drives, 18GB SCSI, in a CPQ proliant with
Smart Array and RAID-1. We need more space. Can I break the mirror by
removing one drive, then insert a 72GB drive, let the system rebuild the
array, then break the array again by removing the last 18GB drive and
inserting a second 72GB? Will windows detect the size change? Has anyone
heard of doing this? Is there a better way?

I have managed to fix the problem I had on my exchange server with OWA.
I reinstalled SUS1.1 and at this point noticed that it runs the IISLockdown
tool. As you probably know this will stop OWA working.

Scripts to Map Drives
I am a bit confused with login scripts, etc in SBS 2000.
I wanted to map a drive letter H on everyone's computers. I did a search
for .bat files on the server and came up with two named SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat
One is in \winnt\sysvol\sysvol
one is in \"domain name"\scripts
It seems like my net use command works in either one. My question is: Is
there a difference between the two, and which one should I be using to map
drives. OR, should I be using a different bat file.

SBS COM+ Installation Errors
Hi,
I'm installing a SBS 2000 on a brand new machine using just the default
options offered ny the installation setup.
Disk one is installing the Server 2000 element and I've reached the point
where it's asking me if I want to use the default or custom network settings
(this is just after I enter the Product Key). I'm getting the following
error:

Moving Outlook Stores to SBS Exchange Server
Users are currently setup so that their email box store is located locally.
I need to export that to the server somehow before or after I setup the POP3
connector that I am planning on implementing. I want their email stores to
be on the server if
possible.

Desperate - Profile is corrupt
I have a user whose profile is corrupt.
No matter which PC he logs into the the problems persist,
problem is a bit vague to go into any real depth.
What i would like to know is can i simply delete his
profile and create a new one? //I Believe i could be
letting myself in for problems doing this.
Problem user Has a username "JOHN".
I have created a new profile named "Trial" to be sure that
new profiles are ok on the system.
What i really need to know is if the user logs in as trial
can he still use his MS outlook as JOHN and if so how can
i achieve this.
I tried it under the WindowsXP > MYCopmuter > Control
Panel > Mail. Unfortunately when i set the user John as
the account to log into when logged in as trial i get a
user does not have privellages to open this folder when i
try to run Outlook.
Basically what i want to know is how to recreate the user
JOhn's profile in the easiest way possible allowing him to
keep his john@ourmail.com username.

OWA not working...
Outlook Web Access has stopped working on out SBS installation, I know it
was working yesterday becuase I used it, since then I have installed SUS1.1
on the Domain Server, and applied the latest MS patches (there were 4, 2
criticals and 2 recommended - I'll post what they were when the server comes
back up) Does anyone know why these would cause a problem.
What I am seeing is as follows: Outlook Web Access starts up, it asks for a
username and password and then loads everything, the tool bar, the outlook
bar etc, but it just says 'loading' at the top of the screen.
Any ideas would be of great help.

I have just installed a new SBS 2000 box on a separate
network to replace the current SBS 2000 box, and I have
realised that I entered a 10 user licence key but left the
dropdown as 5 users.
How can I alter the 5 user to 10 user?
As we have 25 users on the domain, I have the 3 5-CAL
packs from the old SBS to make it 25.

SUS and port 80
Does installing SUS open port 80 on the server? Until recently, I know that
port 80 was closed on our SBS, from using online scans such as those at
GRC.com. A couple of weeks ago I installed SUS and GRC.com now reports that
port 80 is open.
Are the two related, or is this just coincidence?
I haven't installed any other software recently on the server or made
configuration changes in ISA, so I cannot think of any other reasons for the
change. If the change has been made by SUS, is it necessary to leave port 80
open, or is there something I can do to close port 80? If the change has NOT
been made by SUS, what do I need to do to close the port and how can I find
out why the change has occurred?

POP3 mail, downloaded but not delivered.
Hi.
Recently posted this in the wrong place :-(
I have SBS2000 and download via POP3, the mail is being
cleared from the ISP, but is NOT being delivered
internally. I have deleted the database and allowed the
system to recreate it, added all users back to the POP3
connector etc, but I STILL cannot recieve the mail
(although I guess that technically, I AM, just don't know
where it is going to!).
Any ideas guys? I don't particularly want to have to
reinstall unless I really have to.
The server worked fine for about 5/6 weeks after install.

OT: Okidata ML320 on a print server
Ok group, hopefully someone will have a solution for this:
Working with a new client, and they're using an Okidata ML320 dot matrix
printer for their invoices. We're installing new PCs, and they want to move
the invoice printer to a different location. The invoice printer is
currently shared on a Win2k workstation. We decided to attach the printer
to a print server - all fine and dandy - except I cannot for the life of me
get it to print using its built-in utility font. I re-attach it to the
Win2k workstation, and it works great - put it on the print server and it
prints at letter quality (which is approx 5 times slower than utility) and
just way too slow for the client. I've tried a different brand print
server, and the same thing happens. I've verified that all settings are
identical whether its configured for the Win2k client or the print server.
Google didn't offer any clues - anyone have any ideas??

Spontaneous dialouts
Our SBS server dials out within 1 minute of closing down the modem
connection and remains open.
This happens even though no workstations are connected and though there are
no known programmes making this request.
SMTP mail is set to dial up only on a request from the workstation.
Only ports 80, 110 and 25 are open.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions as to how this situation could
be tracked down and corrected.

Backup Solution Needed
I need a recommendation on a backup solution for SBS2K. I need to backup the
Information Store and the users files on the server daily, to an external
hard drive. The built in NT backup is very limited and cannot do what I
need.
What I need is basically for the backup software to do a full backup every
night, where each night, each full backup is given a new file name. Once the
external hard drive is full, it should start overwriting the oldest backup
first.
Is something like this possible? I know that Arcserve from CA or Veritas
software is excellent, but it may be an overkill for my customers budget.

downgrade rights
Hi there,
I would like to know if I purchase SBS 2003, can I
downgrade my server to SBS2000? My client is currently
running NT4, Exchange5.5, SQL 7.0, and proxy2.0 (with
latest service packs).
They want to upgrade to the "latest" version, however they
use an older sales program which will probably not be
compatable with the latest version.
We are shopping for a new sales system, so hopefully,
soon, the compatibility will not be an issue. I can't find

Cannot use Additional Domain Controller
Hi everyone!
I have installed the Active Directory on a separate
separate server which would act as the primary domain
controller. I'm planning to hava a secondary domain
controller in case my primary domain controller goes down
I have a server that would be ready to use. However, if I
try installing the additional domain controller, this
error occurs:
"This product option is not available with the small
Business Server Edition"
How may I be able to around this problem? I really need to
have an additional domain controller where users can log
on immediately and access their files in case the primary
domain server goes down.

Exchange/SMTP/ICW failure
My SMTP outgoing post is not outgoing and I can't understand why. The
Internet Connection Wizard falls over with an apparently meaningless error
message. I hope someone out there can help me.
I have SBS 2000 patched to SP1a. Until yesterday, both incoming and outgoing
mail was moving. During the course of yesterday, I realised that no post was
getting to the external addressees though post was coming in. The SMTP
virtual server cues were showing empty but mail was not hanging up in users'
outlook mail boxes.None of it has been delivered.
I tried to check/reset the configuration using the Interconnect Connection
Wizard. This rapidly completes the internet setup but falls over - after a
long delay - when trying to configure Exchange Server. The error message
says look in the icw.txt log. This is very long, but right at the end it
says
Error 0x80072030 returned from call to GetBOConnector().
The wizard then asks me to ignore this or abort. When I looked this error up
in the MS KB, I found only article 280038 seemed to refer to this problem
but this said that I could 'safely ignore' the error.
There is no SMTP connector in my Exchange Server setup (and I can't remember
if there used to be. I have tried manually creatijng and configuring a SMTP
virtual server and, although it looked alright, I still can't test traffic
out through the door.
My boot drive (a 4 Gb partition) has only 300Mb left and I was wondering if
some of my problems are caused by lack of disk space. I have tried
reinstallying the SP1 patch. None of this works.
Is this a known problem - and does anyone have any suggestions. How feasible
is it to reinstall either Exchange or, if necessary, the whole SBS
operation. What woujld I need to do to safeguard my data in this situation?
Any help or pointers very gratefully received.

connection. For two weeks I had only dial-up connectivity. In consequence, I
was messing around with the POP3 connectors and SMTP configurations to try

laptop not dialling in properly
I've got a new sbs2000 installation. I've got laptops
that dial-in OK, but I have one laptop that will
establish a dial-up connection but then can't see any of
the network, including exchange server. I get a 6118
error message when I try to browse the network or use the
NET VIEW command. This laptop was running w98 so I
upgraded it to XP Pro and it still has the same problem.

Autologon
I will be away for 3 weeks with the system being unattended.
We run a telephony app that must be running on the server at all times.
I would like to setup the server to AutoLogon with the guest acc with this
Telephony app in the startup group, this way if we have a power outage etc
the server will rectify itself.

My client box (Win 2k svp 4) is returning dhcp errors with
event id: 1002. In some cases, this will occur followed by
a crashing of internet explorer. The exact error message
as it appears in the event log is shown below.

Hi! I've been intruded! Sounds personal, but...I like my space to be my
space. An IP address did a port scan, actually about 7 of them. I used the
whois and found them, contacted the ISP who is supposedly doing an
investigation.
I've found this site, http://www.columbia.edu/acis/security/aprocedure.html,
is it a good one to follow? The ISP told me they couldn't tell me anything,
that I'd have to subpeona their records. Who wants to go through all that?
I just want to know who it is and why they're doing it? What rights do we,
the non-intruder have?
Any advice?

I see a domain listed in Current Sessions numerous times and then when I
refresh it goes away. But we are not receiving any mail from that domain
that shows up in Current Sessions.
Also, some domains we send to receive the mail 5 - 10 times.

Considering Upgrade Schedule
Hello,
We've been running SBS2000 on a single server for 2 1/2 years, and we're
trying to figure out possible upgrade scenarios for the next two years.
Being a nonprofit organization, we can get software at a good discount but
we can only do so once every two years (not sure what Microsoft's reasoning
was for that one).
It has been suggested that network performance & reliability can be greatly
improved by separating out Exchange onto its own dedicated server. Of
course, doing so would mean moving from Small Business Server to a full
Windows Server and Exchange Server.
Performance has not really been much of an issue thus far. We are using
about 27GB out of total capacity of 63GB. It's a single 933MHz processor,
we're not using SQL Server. We are about 25 people and we don't plan on
expanding over 30 in the next two years. Network speed is pretty quick, in
terms of document retrieval. Sometimes Access database operations take a
little time, but nothing too klunky.
Would our users notice much of a difference if Exchange were separated onto
its own server? What other benefits/issues might we encounter?
Any thoughts or input is greatly appreciated.

Hi there.
We have had some weird email things happening.
1. People with earthlink addresses are receiving any our domain's emails 5 -
10 times each.
2. I just was looking at the Current Sessions in the Virtual SMTP server and
there was some weird domain I have never heard of connected for over 400
seconds. What should be listed here?
3. We are not receiving any emails from certain email domains such as our
online cc processor.

Some upgrade questions and client-add questions
I'm going to be upgrading a SBS 4.5 network in two phases
soon; it's in two phases because of budgeting issues,
among other things. To ease the workload on our present
(and old) server, I've talked it over with a contractor
that supplies and supports Great Plains financial
software for us, and we're going to aquire an inexpensive
single processor box to move the GP stuff to, probably
just running on Win 2000 pro, as only two people on staff
will ever be accessing it. I'm making the assumption here
that, since it's not a geniune server OS, I'll have to
add it as a client, and thus acquire some client licenses
(as we're currently maxed). That isn't a problem, as I'd
like to add a couple of people to the network anyway. As
I understand it, there can be unlimited user accounts,
but machines are limited to the number of licenses.
While I've read that SBS 2000 CALs are backwards-
compatible with SBS 4.5, does anyone yet know if SBS 2003
CALs will be?
Also, while shopping for the CALs online, I've noticed
that there are actually two versions of the SBS 2000 5
count CAL packs. They are:
SBS 2000 CLT ADD ON-5U 3.5 V/UP $147.92
and
SBS 2000 CLT ADDON 3.5-DMF 5PK $ 279.94
Murphy's Law says I'll probably need the later because
it's more expensive, but can anyone tell me what the
differnces are? The website these are quoted from is

We may buy another server this year, and then replace SBS
4.5 itself next year. We're still considering whether or
not we want to go with SBS 2003 or another solution, but
if we do:
Will there be an upgrade version for SBS 4.5, or will we
have to buy the full version outright? And have any
significant issues arisen from upgrading 4.5 to 2003?

Modems don't accept calls
We have a SBS 2000 server with SP4 2 days ago the modems
stopped answering calls from remote clients on dialup and
faxes sent through shared fax service began failing. VPN
clients are able to connect without problem. Modems test
okay. There are no settings to keep dialups out. Error
message is 678 modem did not respond. Any suggestions on

OWA
Just recently my Small Business Server 2000 OWA has
stopped working.
The VPN connection is still working.
Also tested the ping to the server which used to work now
but doesn't, although you can see the packet attempt on
the icon system tray with each ping. Can still ping out
OK.
Could any of the service packs have caused this? or any
suggestions?

Well a in my previous post, I'm trying to locate an email enable public
folder thru the exchange system manager but when I click on the folders I
get an error:

Changed User Name, BE8.6 doesn't backup her mailbox
Hi,
Running SBS2000, fully patched.
User got married and I changed her last name in the users area of the SBS
(Back Office Manager) from the SBS Admin Console. Also changed her initials
and alias (and everything I could change on the user properties tabs).
Everything is working fine (she can logon, she's getting e-mail, has access
to her files, everything says the new name) but BE 8.6 is not backing up the
new mailbox. When I look at Mailboxes under Mailbox Store under the First
Storage Group, her mailbox is listed by her new name. When I look at the
list of mailboxes in the selections area of BE8.6, it lists the correct
mailbox name but that has the *old* initials in brackets. The BE log says
the mailbox cannot be found and refers to the initials. There's an option in
the BE selections window for the "text version" and it appears that I can
edit the initials to reflect the new initials. However, I did this name
change with very little research (5 minutes of Google groups searching) and
thought I'd ask the experts here before I proceed further. :) Should I do
the text edit? Is there a way to force BE to refresh the initials to the
correct initials? Something else?

SBS 2000 REPLACEMENT TO A NEW HARDWARE
I am running a SBS server 2000 on a an older hardware and hence I want
to move it to a new better server. This is the master domain server in
the network. (I have one mor file server-another domain controller-not
an exchange server-THIS SERVER HAS THE USER PROFILES)
I was thinking to do the follwoing :
1.) build a new server with exact server name, dns etc (only thing
different will be bigger hardrives; raid 5 instead of mirror)
2)Then restore (using disater recovery switch) system state and
Storage group(mailboxes) to the new server from a back from the old
server
3.) Then unplug the old server put in the new server.
USING DISASTER RECOVERY SWITCH, WILL IT DESTROY THE NEW MACHINE???
OR
1.) build a new server with exact server name, dns etc (only thing
different will be bigger hardrives; raid 5 instead of mirror)
2) CREATE ALL USERS EXACTLY IN AD ( I HAVE ONLY 20 USERS) WITH
EXCHANGE MAILBOXES. COPY THE OLD MAILBOXES FROM THE OLD SERVER
3)Then unplug the old server put in the new server, CONNECT ALL
CLIENTS
Will this work?
What are the things I am missing

I'm trying to add an email alias to a group but exchange is complaining that

Strange OWA Problem
OK OWA used to work fine. Trying to use it now after long
dormant period (i.e. have installed loads of service packs
since it was last used so cant narrow probelm down to a
service pack install).
Anyone who is a member of the administrators group can use
it fine, either remotely or while on the network.
However, for anyone not in this group it will not work at
all, it just keeps prompting for the password 3 times and
freezes (all the menu icons are displayed properly but no
inbox displayed) I have made sure that its just Anon and
Basic authentication enabled in IIS. The weird thing is
that if I add an affected user into the administrators
group it works fine - indicationg that perhaps it's a
permission problem, but even wierder still, when I then
take them out of admin group, it still works fine!

Security Groups
On a fresh SBS 2000 box that will replace our old one, I
want to assign security groups. There will ultimately be
three types of security groups: high, med, low - where
the high group will allow users to have full Admin access
to their machines, med will have semi-admin access and low
will be no admin rights at all.
Currently, we do not use security groups on the SBS
domain. All I do is take off Local Admin rights for each
user - so they cannot install/uninstall programs, move
files into the System/WINNT folders or change the clock.
Some software needs registry tweaks for it to work under
these conditions.
I want to deploy these three groupings (or maybe just two -
high and low), where I will assign myself "high" (as I
constantly add/remove software from my machine) and "low"
to all users so that they cannot do anything!
How do I set up these groupings and the necessary tasks
before I add the users one-by-one to AD and assign them to
the groups.
I need step-by-step help as I have not done this before.

Administrator not administrator
I am currently setting up a new SBS 2000 box remotely
before I deploy it on our current SBS 2000 Domain. The
new SBS 2000 box is identical in it;s functionality, but
it has the all important RAID5 redundancy and has a better
spec.
I have installed SBS 2000, and I am now patching up the
whole machine using Windows Update. I will also run SP1a
for SBS 2000.
What I want to do now is make the Administrator user not
Administrator, but to set up a new user that will be
Administrator. This is for security, as I know that a lot
of people do this, as Administrator as a Username is 50%
of the way of cracking the password anyway.
How is this done? Do I make a new user in AD on the new
SBS and assign the same "Member Of" components to this
user and then disable the user "Administrator"? I can

Add Exchange to SBS2000 domain
Hi everyone,
I'm having big problems installing Exchange on to my
SBS2k domain, and I'm currently pondering suicide :-) I
am trying to move Exchange from SBS on to a new Win2k
server in a data-center (i.e. on to a new server, running
a full-blown copy of Exchange).
I have created a new administrative group (i.e. a
seperate admin group from the 'first storage group'), and
the plan is now to install the new Exchange server here,
and copy the mail boxes across.
I understand that when you install Exchange you should be
prompted, and asked which Organisation and administrative
group you want to install within. For some reason I am
not - the install runs through and the server does not
appear in the administrative group I have created.
Please Help!!! Any advice or pointers would be much
appreciated.

I want to enable 3 people in our organisation to access my
Calendar from their Outlook client.
We are running SBS2000 (Exch 2000) and Outlook 2000 client.

Adding SBS Client apps to a TS
This is a bit of a repost, so I apologize up front for that.
I'm trying to install the client apps for SBS (firewall client and IE) onto
a Terminal Server. I added the SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat to the profile tab and
told SBS to install the apps to the TS. When I log in under the TSAdmin
account, there is an extremely short flash of the SBS script window (the
minimized command prompt window) and then it runs the rest of the scripts I
have. The SBS apps don't install.
Am I misunderstanding the directions or the results? Here is the procedure I
am following:
To add a TSAdmin user account:
1.. From Small Business Server 2000, open Control Panel, and then click
Administrative Tools.
2.. Click Active Directory Users and Computers, and then click Domain
Users.
==>(Domain Users isn't a group, but Users is, and I assume this is
what they mean)
1.. From the Microsoft Management Console window that appears, click
Action, and then click New User.
2.. Name the user TSAdmin, and type in a unique password.
3.. On the remaining screens, use the default settings, except for Logon
Script on the Profile screen. This field must contain the following:
SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat
==>(There is no space in the new user setup to place this script pointer in,
so I added it after the user was created under the profile tab)
This ensures that the client installation program runs properly when you
log on to the Terminal Server as the TSAdmin user.
==>(I set the TSAdmin user as a Domain Admin member and went to the SBS
Personal
Console and told it to install IE and the firewall client to the TS, but to
no avail.)
Any direction to investigate would be appreciated.

Exchange/Outlook
We have SBS2000. We have not set up Exchange and Outlook
on it yet. I would like to set both up for shared
calendaring, task management, shared contacts, IM, however
I do not want to host our own email server. We use POP3
email accounts provided by our ISP. Can anyone help. I
have already been on MS website and went thru all the

SBS Office 2000 and Printer Lock-Up
Hi. We've got a LAN with 8 workstations plus server
running SBS2000. We have 3 printers on network and up
until yesterday, all worked fine.
Yesterday a user at a workstation sent a print job to the
newest networked printer (HP Laserjet 4100). The job does
not appear to have ever reached the printer itself (i.e.
the printer is not acknowledging receiving any data and
has no job to cancel). The job is, however, clogging up
the print que.
We have tried to cancel/delete the job, from both the user
who created it's workstation and the server. Both
attempts appear to be successful (i.e. no error message),
and the job's status changes to "deleting", but it doesn't
ever delete (over 24 hours now). We have tried
uninstalling that printer from that workstation and
reinstalling, which works, but when reinstalling, the
subject bad job is still in que (under
status "deleting"). We have tried deleting and/or
uninstalling the subject printer from the server, which
again appears to work (status of printer changes
to "Deleting") but the printer never gets deleted.
We're at wits end! Have searched net but could not find
any information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How does the CAL licensing thing work?
Would someone explain to me how this CAL licensing things works for SBS 2000
or 2003? I'm gonna have two persons accessing Exchange on it, so obvioulsy
I need 2 CALs. How about me, the admin, do I need a CAL for myself? What
if I setup an ftp server on it, do I need a CAL for absolutely anyone who
accesses the ftp server? Cause that makes no sense. Or are CALs used only
when someone logs onto the domain? Any other access to the server is not
counted as a CAL?
Does SBS actually know how many CALs you have and prevents anyone from
accessing it if you exceed it or is it just MS lawyers that do?

Help! Spoofing
Using SBS2000, running Exchange, using GFI MailEssentials
9. Blocking 99% of spam using exchange manager filter
along with GFI. However, there are a few spammers who
are spoofing our domain and sending emails to our
employees using the employee's email address.
The spam messages gets through since all of my employees
are on the GFI whitelist. How do you block these
spammers from sending you email like this. I have
relaying turned off and have run all the tests to ensure
my server is not set up for relaying.
