If I add an identical extra processor to a dual
motherboard on SBS2000, which only has a single processor
currently, Will I need to reinstall/repair the operating
system or will it just pick up the new processor?

It should just pickup the extra processor....It did on ours with no problem.
Is your motherboard ACPI compliant?

Many thanks,

The board is a Gigabyte GA6VTXD and should be ACPI
compliant.

You still have to do something to the HAL:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q234558

Until you do that the OS will not send any threads to the 2nd processor.

Javier, that KB article is specific to Windows 2000. I didn't look, but is
the same issue also there for Windows 2003, and if so, is there a similar KB
article?

I don't know and I couldn't find anything on the Win2k3 subject (but as you
know MS sometimes doesn't update their KB articles to reflect new versions).
If you find something let me know.

it does depend on the HAL installed.

When I had a single processor in my dual capable mobo a windows install
would load the multicpu hal anyway, when I installed the 2nd CPU no action
was required to enable it.

Also, with W2K and above it is extremely likely that you can successfully
change from single to SMP via the device manager (I hear, haven't done it
m'self) but most people I have heard of have had problems going from SMP to
single.
