We have Norton Antivirus corporate edition v7.6.... do we NEED to
renew / buy it again to (legally?) keep getting the latest antivirus
definitions? There's no subscription expiration like in NAV 200x. It
keeps working even after the year since it's been installed. If you
look at the symantec store's website, it talks of "The Symantec Small
Business 5-Packs carry a full year of Upgrade Insurance and only 3
Technical Support Incidents for the year. ". I don't need to upgrade
the app - it's running fine on our machines. Unless I am missing
something, it doesn't say this comes with 1 year subscription to virus
definitions. But I can't see them letting a business off the hook of
annual payments while socking individuals?!

And so if somewhere in the license or somewhere else it does say you
only get 1 year of virus definitions.... then a) how come there's no
subscription expiration field and b) it doesn't seem to save you money
when you renew - you have to buy the latest version of the program at
retail price? THANKS!

I fought this battle with Symantec sales reps a couple of years ago.
Originally, they assured me that I could download virus defs forever without
additional costs. After reading more about the product and talking to some
resellers, it turns out that the NAVCE (or all corporate versions) do
require a yearly license renewal. Symantec just anticipates that the
corporate world will contact them or a reseller and renew the product to
keep things 'legal". If you need 10 or more licenses, you can buy the paper
from a reseller. If you need less than 10 licenses, you'll have to buy the
suite again (at retail or online prices).

I found that I could buy a 5 or 10 user version 8.0 Symantec Antivirus CE
(can't get 7.6 anymore) online for much less than the cost of the latest
(version 8.1). 8.1 also has an activation scheme tied to it. (Haven't
installed one yet, so not sure how this works). I then just put the 8.0 on
the shelf and continued using 7.6 on the client's network. If you have the
MS Exchange module with version 7.6, you'll need to buy the retail box or
paper licenses yearly that cover that.

If you're licenses are more than 60 days expired and you are purchasing the
paper licenses, you need to buy the "upgrade" licenses (a little more $$).
Then next year, you can get back on schedule and buy the regular licenses.

In my conversations with rsellers, I also found that Symantec licenses
devices per "node" and the server counts one node. So a retail box with 5
licenses gives you 1 server license and 4 workstations; a 10 user retail box
gives you 1 server and 9 workstations; etc.

I believe that you can physically continue to download new
definitions and the product will work. But Merv is
correct, Symantec depends on you to keep legal, and your
consultant should be striving to have you attain license
compliance...I recommend it to all my clients.... I have
purchases 7.5, 7.6, 8.0 and 8.1 with paper licenses for
various clients and am quite satisfied with the SAV
products. Keep in mind, each new version has added
functionality that generally benefits you as the
administrator. In 8.1 there is a continuous update feature
that I like for my smaller networks(<75 desktops +
servers) I have configured it to have the primary server
query Symantec every 30 minutes and the desktops and other
servers checkin with the primary every 30
minutes...essentially i get a new SAV update, no later
than 60 minutes after it is posted by Syamntec. Adds a
little network traffic, but in these "worm" days, I don't
have to devote my entire attention to keeping the "door
closed". In addition the newer versions have features for
the various IM programs...I hate the IM programs, but
sometimes there is a business purpose and I am pleased
that Symantec addressed it.

In my opinion, keeping current is cheaper
that "recovering" after a destructive attack. You
know..."penny wise, pound foolish" and it simplifies MY
LIFE as an administrator.
