    - Time Server I've used the Time service before, however it appears that at some point the time server I was using changed IP's or gave up time serving. So when I went in to fiddle around with the time service again, I decided to try and set the switch "w32tm -period" to a different value than the default. Trouble is that after I type the command (ie: w32tm -period 3) it just sits there. Doesn't return me to the comand line, doesn't provide any feedback, just sits like its hung during the command.     - Remote VPN access Hi all, Configured Server as per tutorial on smallbizserver.net & have tried to VPN client that is in another country & not member of domain. Computer name, Logon 7 password details are in AD. Remote client tries to connect via VPN (setup as per smallbizserver.net tutorial) but get error 649 returned - The account doesn't have permission to dial in. Anyone have any ideas / suggestions?     - ntbackup event log error New VXA-2 drive (with V10 tape) in SBS2K server. Backing up C:, Exchange, and system state with normal backup. Backup appears to run smoothly (I don't see any error messages in the ntbackup log), but the backup of C: ends with the following event log error: Event Type: Error Event Source: NTBackup Event Category: None Event ID: 8001 Date: 1/9/2004 Time: 7:13:21 PM User: N/A Computer: MyServer Description: End Backup of 'C:' Verify: Off Mode: Replace Type: Normal Exchange and system state backups do not produce errors.     - VPN and ISA Server We have setup a VPN by right clicking Network Configuration and choosing the setup VPN option in ISA Server. We then go into active directory and right click a users name and select the profile tab and in here check the radio button which says allow remote dial in. Therefore our VPN should work and clients who have dial in enabled should be able to access the network remotely via VPN. We want to use routed IP and have purchased 10 IP Address' from our ISP. What i need to know is do the leased IP address' go into the LAT? Also if there is any advice anyone can give on how best to use/configure VPN etc. i would be much oblidged.     - Post Exchange SP3 Problem Hi all I have scanned recent posts with no avail! I ran the exchange SP3 (then SBS SP1a) and things have not worked since! I cannot start any of the Exchange services and most of the menus are greyed out! (Mount Store etc). I've tried a couple of things that I've found using Google but all without success.     - Frontpage can't publish Can anyone talk me through how to get Frontpage (2000) to publish? SBS2000 (all patches & ISA used) via router on static IP on adsl - client pc can browse internet fine, however any attempt to use Frontpage to either upload site or to open site on-line fails (just sits there appearing to be logging on, yet nothing happens).     - Assigned application is not installing Dear all, when I assign an application through SBS server management console, assign application to computer. when the user logs to domain and it says one application is ready to install, do you want to install or postpone, when I click on install it says " administrator access requires to install this application" why pls anybody can help me? Actually this is a small addin program to outlook2000(attachment option.exe)and it should install under a specific username.     - how to copy folder with permission Hi, we want make an asp page that create a forder in the server. I can copy a template folder structure (with subfolder). This template have several permission settigs for every folder. This is a structure for archive our new job (document, fax, etc.) The user go in the intranet page and with a form create a new job the script create the folder structure and open it. Any idea ?     - server cannot communicate using computer names Hello microsoft experts. My new win2000 server suddenly won't communicate using computer names. I can ping it from all workstations. The server accesses the internet thru the same nic card fine. tcp/ip seems OK. 'computers near me' cannot see the server. And 'my network places' cannot see the workstations. My user accounts still work locally. How do I verify the functionality of the microsoft protocols?     - Exchange / Outllook Synchronization On my laptop for some reason after upgrading from Outlook 2002 to Outlook 2003 offline folders do not synchronize after clicking Send/Receive (or pressing F9) any more and neither do they automatically synchronize on exit. Short of selecting each folder and then selecting "Tools / Send Receive / This Folder", I cannot get the folders to synchronize All worked fine before. What have I done (or need to do)?     - Error when first logging on to the domain Issue is user can't log on to server's domain directly. 1) Either from a cold boot, reboot or stand by user can't log on when the patch cable is in the NIC card. Error "There is not account for you on this domain" or You user name and password are incorrect or Cap lock is on try again without Cap lock". 2) If you take the patch cable out of the NIC card the user can log on without changing the domain to local workstation. 3) After the user is on the system attach the patch cable and he is connected to the network. Things I've done: 1) Replace the NIC driver 2) Tired a different NIC card 3) User can log on directly from another system so I don't think it is his profile. Any suggestion?     - Backup Exec and admin "rights". Need admin rights to backup a directory? Built a new sbs2000 server. A basic file access question. Q: Does Backup Exec 9 need "administrator" rights to a folder on the hard drive to back it up? I have 22 users and I set up a temporary drop box for each with sharing and security with their names only, no admin rights. Inheritied permissions are off. This is a temporary solution and I'll explain. By giving users access only, if someone sits at the server, unless they know how to assign admin rights, they cannot see each other's folders. Access is denied. For now. The server is not locked down yet and anyone can access the server's console. The company owner wants the server logged in as Administrator for now until she learns some of the features on her own. This is the small company's first server. Security will be tightened down when a security policy is in place and files are transferred to the server. For now, the owner wants the server left unlocked at the console.     - SBS2K3 Fax problem and Exchange question Hi, I'm studying the SBS2K3 stuff, and now I bumped into two issues. First one is the fax. I managed to configure it, but for some reason what happens when I try to send a fax it goes to the fax console outbox and stays there. It claims the job status as "busy". This happens to all fax numbers. I do believe that the fax modem is correctly set up as I can issue AT commands over hyperterminal. Haven't tried the reception part yet... Second one is with Exchange. I want to set up a user, that would have a totally different email address than other users (ie, if most users have userA@mycompany.com, this one would be UserB@someothercompany.net).     - SBS 2K Clients can't access outside VPN device This is a bit of a challenge for me as I have spent a couple of days on it without any success!. I have two offices remotely located, both with broadband connections. One with SBS 2k and the other with win 2k sever behind a Sonicwall VPN device. The client machines connected to the SBS 2K need to connect to a Sonicwall remote VPN device so to access the win 2k server.     - VPN connection works but not OWA I have configured the SBS 2000 VPN and am able to connect remotely via VPN OK. However, my understanding was that unlike in SBS 4.5, SBS 2000 by default makes all users capable of accessing the Exchange 2000 via OWA. The problem is that when entering http://server_external_ip_number/exchange/logon.asp remotely from IE, the page is not displayed. What am I missing in this?     - sbs 2003 and email Hi everyone, I have spent all day on this with no luck heres my problem I have installed sbs2003 configured pop3 connectors & smart hosts for smtp all works fine I can send and retrieve internal & external mail. I have added an smtp account for each user @gonedigital.net so that external mail will be seen to come from our external addresses however if I set these gonedigital.net address's to primary my pop3 connectors no longer deliver mail to the users. Just wanted to inform those that remember me freaking out about the virtual memory errors that I was getting that downloading the latest service packs, etc. seems to have resolved all of the issues that were showing up (imagine that). Their full time employee (net admin in addition to original job she was hired on for) did not do these when I advised her to so now it looks like the company is going to have me come in every week to take care of things. But no connection can be made. errors include no valid certificate for which i have installed and enabled certificate services as per MS Knowledge Base article, also stopped and started the necesary services as per another Knowledge base article stating services must start after each other. Single client log in into the server through VPN works as expected. On the isa to isa bridge. Error in session timing out still, is this a possible resriction in SBS like the other many resrictions in place (all modules on single server not allowed to join an active directory forest etc?     - Outlook delegate error I have a user (Bob) set up as a delegate for another user's (Steve) calendar. When ever Bob tries to open Steve's calendar, he gets a "Unable to display the folder. The calendar folder could not be found." Both Bob and Steve are located at a remote site which uses a router to create a VPN connection to the SBS 2000 server. Bob has logged off his system and logged back in and the same error comes up. They are both using Outlook XP. I did a knowledge base search and the only thing I found delt with setting up delegates (which has already been done). Any thoughts or suggestions?     - TS Local Log on Issues Hi All, There is something I obviously do not understand about local log ons to a SBS TS Server. I thought Domain Controller user rights were an umbrella policy over the whole show. I thought Domain user rights were for the Domain itself I thought Local rights were for each individual user or machine. Why then, when I add a user (or the group he/she is in) to the Local Log On policy, the user is still denied access. Can someone please explain to me what I am missing?     - Installing SBS2000 CALs via an Open Licensing Agreement? We have recently purchased an SBS Client Add On Pack via an Open License agreement. However, all that is delivered is a sheet of paper that grants authorization and agreement numbers, while SBS 2000 requires a Client Add On disk or application to install more CALs. Does anyone have any information on how to install additional CALs on an SBS 2000 installation after purchasing the CALs via an Open Licensing agreement?     - postmaster sending emails? Hi I have a weird problem and was looking for some help. We have an SBS 2K server and use a hardware firewall which basically only allows our ISP's mail servers to connect to port 25. I have found recently that in the smtp connector that our postmaster email address is trying to send messages to domains we don't deal with. They are all the same size so and from postmaster@mydomain.co.uk. They don't appear to connect but persistently retry. been through all the settings and we are not realying but is our server trying to send NDR's back to non exsistent email accounts etc.. I found some advice somewhere about turning off allow NDR's on the internet message format, advanced tab which I have done.     - Load your guns..... I fully expect to be flamed for this (and deservedly so) so this post is to let everyone get it off their chest and out of their system. Up to this point in our company's operation, we have been invisible from the outside. The router ran a brick wall firewall, ate pings, used NAT on a dynamic IP from the ISP which fed into our second NIC on a seperate subnet that received its requests from ISA (which appeared buttoned down very tightly too) and we ran the firewall client on each machine. Virus Defs are check multiple times per day for latest updates. The Shields Up! test at GRC would show us as completely stealth. All was good in life. Due to the relative inpenetrability of our network and having only a less time than part time administrator, the server has been left alone since its install. (I think we put Exchange SP1 on in a desperate attempt to fix the 80004005 error with public folders) To date, we have been infected with zero viruses, bogged down or stopped by zero worms, and hacked zero times. I'm the only blind guy left standing who is running around in a mine field waving a lighting rod in a thunderstorm. I'll give you a break to vent and let your blood pressure come back down. Go ahead, I deserve it, I know. OK, now that you have regained conciousness and bandaged your head, here's where I beg mercifully for help. I ran the Baseline Security Analyzer (hfnetchk) and I haven't seen that much red on a screen since the tail end of "Carrie". The problem I'm having is that alot of the things its telling me I should have installed I THOUGHT were big no-nos, like SP4 for Windows 2000. I thought I had read the SBS shouldn't go past SP2. So the help I need is this: Is there a listing of approved patches and services packs EXPLICITLY for SBS2000? Applying this many 'hotfixes' I'll be shocked if the server survives the whole list of them and remains fully functional. Do Exchange Services need to be stopped for ALL installations, or only if you are using Windows Update? On the upside, I have seen the error of my ways and in this new year will be tackling getting the server properly secured as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for bearing with me.     - Extending (expanding) dynamic disk I have a Dell PowerEdge 2500 with SBS 2000 on it. I would like to increase the disk space available. From what I read so far, it doesn't seem like an easy task. Currently I have 3 x 18gb SCSI disk in an RAID 5 configuration. The SBS 2000 system has been running rock solid for about 2 years. We are extremely low on disk space. My drives are c: 8gb, F: 12gb, P: 12 gb I believe the disk originally were basic and then changed to Dynamic. From what I've read, it appears that you can not extend dynamic disk that were originally basic. If this is true, how would I go about inceasing the disk space? I'd like to keep all of the disk space within the disk array. I called Dell and they said adding new drives are pretty easy and that I would use Dell Open Manager (Array Manager Console). The technician was unsure as to whether or not I could extend the existing volume. (Basically he said Dell would not support dynamic disk drives) Has anyone gone through this before? If so, how would I achieve my goal of getting more disk space and keeping all this within the RAID 5 configuration. The SBS 2000 system has been running rock solid for about 2 years.     - Forwarding email in exchange problems have SBS2000 setup with exchange recieving mail via DNS and SMTP on the domain @exampledomain.co.uk My ISP supply 10 pop mail boxes on a sub domain @pop3.exampledomain.co.uk I wish to use these mail boxes to forward mail to so that some people who work from home can pick up mail from them without having to open up holes in my firewall and increasing security risks. If sent email from the office to any of the pop mail boxes e-mail goes through ok. I have set up contacts for the pop mail boxes in AD so that mail is forwarded to them.     - 12gb system partititon getting full after 6 months, why? and how to resize? I have had my DELL 1600SC for six months and now systems partition is 16% free, 1.9gb free from a 12 gb partition. Breakdown Clnapps 1.87 gb DELL 184 mb Docs 118 mb I386 322 mb Mediaapp 215mb Progs 1.27gb SBS2000 3.07 gb WINNT 2.2gb = approx 9.25gb total other directories = 37mb reported free space = 1.9gb Server is fully patched an up to date (is this becaause of all the service packs that are installed?). There is no problem with the exchange and data partitions. Can anyone give me a steer? Is it possible to resize the systems partition? I have 2 x 36gb software mirrored drives. I am thinking of buying two more mirrored 36gb drives. Plugging them in and moving the data partition to them. Leaving System and Exchange to share the original drives. My SBS2000 server has a hardware Raid-5 disk system, 2 logical drives.
Logical drive 1 - C: (basic) & F: (basic), Logical drive 2 - E: (dynamic)
I can run w2k disk defrag on drive E: & F: without a problem, when i try to
run it on drive C: i get

Disk defragmenter could not initialize message & refuses to defrag it,
Why?????

It used to run on drive C: before, few months ago, now it refuses to. Help
please
