Two disks of the RAID 5 stopped functioning and our PDC is gone. We have a BDC running, and I have forced the Operation Master roles that I can to be taken over by the PDC. There exists no system backup of the PDC. The computer that died was running Small Business Server 2000 with ISA and Exchange installed

What is the best way to bring back our PDC and also re-install exchange as to minimize the impact on Active Directory and the users? There any kind of forest preparation or a switch to use with DCPromo

You should be able to install win2k server on the new hardware, transfer the
FSMO roles back to that server, and then upgrade it to SBS 2000. You might
run into a few other steps along the way - for example, you'll probably have
to call MS to get your CALS reinstalled. Nothing in the process should
disable anything that's working now, so you can take your time and post back
if you run into any problems along the way.

Was the old system hardware or software raid? SCSI? I'm curious since it
seems like uncommonly bad luck to have two drives fail at once.

I cannot change the RID operations master unless the first server is back online (which is impossible). Will re-installing exchange just overwrite the information currently in Active directory about exchange?

I'm a little out of my element in that I've never been in the situation
you're facing (and damn glad of it). My understanding is that since the
original server is dead, you need to seize the roles rather than
transferring them in the more graceful way you would if the old SBS were
still alive. See KB article 223787, "Flexible Single Master Operation
Transfer and Seizure Process"

Yes, Dave is correct, seize all the roles with NTDSutil.

If it was a true RAID-5, why not just replace the two disks that failed and rebuild the system
I've done it before
Just wondering

A RAID 5 can only have one disk fail at a time. The equivilent space of one disk is used for parity. I don't know what kind of magic you used to repair a RAID 5 with two failed disks, but please tell me.
