Hi,

I am running SBS2003 Premium with Exchange 03 SP2, and I have a query. I
have a user who has deleted an email 28 days ago from his inbox and deleted
items. Backup on tape is taken every night, so this has skipped the tape
backup.

What I am asking is that is it possible to recover the email. the deletion
retention (days) is set to 7.

Please help.

Thanks.

Hi,

There is only one way to recover the email now that is to replay the
exchange transaction log files again. You need to have all the log files
till date. If you take a Full backup of exchange then it would remove the
all the log files too.

The item in question would have been backed up to tape with the mailbox
even after deletion, until the retention period expired.

You would need a tape from any time before the deletion up to deletion
date + 7. Then you'd create a Recovery Storage Group (RSG) in Exchange,
and perform a normal Exchange Restore (it'll be redirected to the RSG
automatically). You can then use exmerge agaisnt the RSG to retrieve the
one item and then delete the RSG.

Alternatively, if you have message journalling turned on, or a 3rd-party
archival program, you'd refer to those (you do, right?).

The answers you received are fine. In the future, however, you'll get a
better response for SBS 2003 questions from the appropriate newsgroup:
