Is there anything special I should know before trying to defrag these files?
Dismount, defrag and mount again..?

thanks in advance,

Jussi

you mean with eseutil? Always do a backup first.

Hi

Stop the exchange services and copy the *.edb and *.stm
files. After copying the files start the services,
dismount both the public and private stores. Use
ESEUTIL /d databasename to dfrag the databases.

Mark, oskidoo.1me,

I ment a file-based defrag for the .stm & .edb files, not internal defraq
with ESEUTIL.

Thanks for the link Mariette.

- So do you think that file based (not ESEUTIL /d) defraq is unnecessary?
- *IF* you wanted to do it with Diskeeper how would you do it?
(Has ESE some way of knowing where the datapages reside on the disk, that
could be corrupted with data file (*.edb/*.stm) defragmentation?)

Thanks,

Jussi

no, file based defrag IS necessary. Not so much in RAID5 based systems due
to how data is physically put ojn the drive but in all other instances it is
something that should be routine. Those of us that lived through NT4 days
saw the need for it, especially with databases. I have a client with an EMR
package that the s/w vendor highly suggests daily defrags on the data
partition. I think that's a bit much but they are the developer of that
package.

Hello Jussi,

If you want to perform an offline defrag of your databases, then you
definitely want to run only eseutil /d on the database files. Note that
you only need to run the eseutil /d on the .edb files, as this will include
the .stm files as well.

Assuming a default installation of Exchange, the command, run from the
\Exchsrvr\Bin folder would be:

eseutil /d "c:\ program files\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb" (and then
pub1.edb as well)

The other utilities mentioned will not be aware of the internal structure
of the Exchange jet database files, and is not recommended to directly run
utilities on those databses. Let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks for your reply Dana,

I have two questions:
1) Does ESEUTIL /d do a "file-based" defragmentation (arrange .edb/.stm file
data to continuous allocation units on the physical disk) OR does it just do
*internal* arrangement of data pages *inside* ESE database, leaving the
physical file fragmented?

2) Is "file-based" defragmentation necessary for .edb/.stm files?

Thanks,
Jussi

If you want to defrag the files use the hard drive defrag utility you
would have to stop the Exchange services. Some folks install the
Exchange edb and stm on the C: partition. You could defrag the files
on your D: partiton and then move the Exchange files to the D:
partition. If your hard drive is a fragmented mess and your Exchange
databases have grown then hard drive defrag utilites may be of use.
That is one reason why some foks dedicate a partition just for the
Exchange database.
