    - vpn sbs to sbs Hi All We have managed to connect our 2 sbs sites via vpn but have found that we are unable to terminal services from any computers on the lan to any computers on the other lan apart from the sbs box. The only ones that can terminal services beyond the sbs boxes are the sbs's themselves. On doing a tracert we have found that the destination sbs Ip is as far as it will go. Does anyone know the answer to this, is it ISA blocking or what?. Static routes have been but in ras and the routes have been added on the local machines via route add to no avail.     - SMTP Mail not working Just yesterday I noticed no one's mail getting sent out. I checked the Exchanger Vitural Server's Quene and they are all sitting there waitng. The only thing that has changed is our ISP changed our static internet IP address and last week I installed Symantec Mail Security for Exchange Server.     - Ideal SBS 2003 config We currently have a SBS2000 server and we are looking to go to SBS2003 server starting from scratch, not upgrading. (me might get the upgrade version, and I do not even know if that's a good idea since SBS2003 comes in different flavors) Would any of you with enough time and desire to help, please outline the ideal Server configuration for a SBS2003 server?     - delayed email... Recenlty one of my uses came ot me and mentioned that one of the people she has attempted to reply back to (using "reply") was not getting her email - and that she had not received an NDR as of yet. I checked the Exchange System Management - queue and indeed there was the email waiting to be delivered... The email sat in there for a few days, retrying, waiting to be delivered and then finally after a few days our employee did get an NDR back. She asked me why this was happening (why she hadn;t received an NDR right away) and I mentioned that there could be any number of reasons and rhymed off a couple that I thought may cause it... SHe had received a couple of delayed notices and then finally the NDR came in... What reasons could there be that a seemingly valid email address could not be devlivered? I had mentioned to our employee that it was possible that the receipients server was not allowing incoming emails (the recipient works for the government) and yet this person had asked our employee to respond back to her initial email - so I would think that this person would have been able to receive email in the past... What other reasons could there be? I am just concerned that it may have been an issue at our end but doubt that as once it leaves here, it's out of our control really, and all other external email has been working just fine...     - Microsoft SUS.. Since patch management is becoming more and more of a headache all the time, I am looking at SUS. I have a couple questions... 1) I've heard this is a free tool. Is this the case? 2) Has anyone here loaded it and does it work well?     - Outlook02 and XP Pro Hi, We are running SBS2000 on a LAN with 60% Win2K Pro with Outlook2002 client and the rest run Win XP Pro with Outlook 2002 client. What I have noticed is that when users view their Exchange Mailbox on the XP Pro machines using Outlook 2002 client, they need to click around the folders (e.g. Sent Items) in folder view to refresh their Inbox, otherwise any new emails would not appear in their Inbox automatically.     - SBS2K with MIS 2002? Hi all, Think I may already know the answer but thought I'd check it out first... I know that MIS2002 isn't supported for installation on the same box as SBS2K [and that MIS has been superceded with Exchange 2003 which has the functionality built-in] but am wondering if this is one of those situations whereby it would work but was just not the prefered solution. IE it was recommended not to be set-up that way but that it could be made to work... We're going to be moving onto SBS2K3 sometime in 2005 but this is something that would be enormously handy for some of our users to have now. I know they can simply ActiveSync from their PC/laptop to their Smartphones but I'd prefer them to be able to do some while out and about in real-time... If not, fair enough [and I suspect this will be the case, before anyone flames me!] and will use it as a lever to speed up the upgrade to 2K3... :-) Cheers, David Tag: Defragging a RAID system...     - netmodem problem I had an XP machine using netmodem conneting to a server(SBS2000). Sometime around installing XP service pack 2, this connection failed (I'm not positive it's related). I've uninstalled and re-installed net modem several times including removing all shared ports and starting over. Following the instructions in "How to set up a Windows XP Professional client in an SBS 2000 network, article ID 316418", the network modem never shows up in device manager so naturally it won't install in "phones and modems".     - internet connection sharing and VPN setup I have two network cards on my server. One is connected to T1 line and other one is connected to LAN. I am trying to share internet connection on the server with everone on the LAN. I tried through Routing and Remote access, setup Internet network setup. It works fine.     - Exchange Migration Upgrading a SBS2K to SBS 2003. I backed up all the data and did a NT BAckup of the exchange database. Let's say I experience exchange problems after the upgrade, will I have to isntall SBS2K again to get the email working? Just trying to plan ahead here, hopefully everything goes as planned but it seems if there were migration problems I would be using exchange 2003 with a NTBackup of exchange 2000.     - cant send email but can receive I'm setting up a very small sbc config. All I want to do is have the performance reports send email to an external (bellsouth) email address. I am thinking I have to configure the exchange piece. Ive gotten the pop3 connector working so it pulls email from bellsouth but it will not send email to bellsouth. The message is something about bellsouth not knowing who my domain is. Question is is there a way to have the perf and usage reports sent to a bellsouth account without doing the exchagne config or do I have to do that and if I do have to config exchange how do I get past this error.     - Spam in Exchange server Hi, I was troubleshooting a problem on my SBS2K server where I am receiving an enormous amount of messages in the badmail folder. I followed the instructions to create a new bad mail folder and delete the old one but am getting thousands of files in the folder per hour. This prompted me to check for unauthorized relaying. When I checked the Default SMTP virtual server's queues, I found hundreds. I followed the steps to clean up the smtp queues (however, the only way I could get the Small Business SMTP Connector to stabilize was by clearing the check box for Anonymous access on the Authentication page of the Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties. This stopped the bad mail messages and the SMTP queues, but also stopped users from receiving e-mail (although they were able to send just fine). Selecting the Anonymous access check box restored the users' ability to receive mail, but also brought back the bad mail messages and the numerous queues. What am I doing incorrectly here?     - info@domain account in SBS 2003 In a Small Business Server 2003 Premium: While trying to create a user with an account name of INFO and having the e-mail address info@ourdomain where ourdomain is our own domain, I receive the message that an account already exists with this e-mail address. I try to find in Active Directory such an account, to no avail. However, the creation/modification of the user account can be completed with no other problems. Subsequently, messages incoming to this "new" account are bounced back with an error message stating that more than one accounts are configured to this e-mail address. What gives? Have you ever encountered such a problem. I've tried searching this problem in MSDN, but obviously my search string/keywords are incorrect.     - slow response Hi I have sbs 2000 which has been going well for about 12 months. Now, if I press the "windows START" on the task bar either 1. nothing happens, ie no response, or 2.it only displays the first 3/4 of the menu. If I do a "ctrl,alt,del" and select "task manager" "processes" the START suddenly springs into action.From then on I can open and close START no problems. It is after half an hour or so of idle time when I come back it freezes again When the START gives no or slow response, I can still open up any of the desktop icons no problem. Any help appreciated.     - Remote Desktop Web Connection OK, this is new to me and I have read everything I have in book form. Unfortunatly everything is a few years old and talks more about dial-up rather than DSL connections and is absent any XP Pro data. I have also read most of the thread and just don't seem to be getting it all. :( I have an SBS 2000 machine and I have an off-site XP Pro client. This user wants to administrate the SBS over his DSL connection. The SBS is also using ISA server to act as point of outgoing tunnel for all on-site clients to get to the Internet. So, what's the best way for this user to get the job done?? Does the XP RDWC remove the need for Terminal Services? Do I sitll need to create a VPN connection to use RDW client?     - add user but no mail store? Hi I have added a new user via the wizard (deleted and re added about 6 times) and cannot connect the user to exchange from Outlook 2003? When she logs on she authenticates to the domain but every time outlook starts and trys to set up, it says cannot find user name in name list. The wizard seems to hang for about 3-4 minutes (or longer sometimes) with the progress bar about half way across then all of a suddon completes. Is that normal? I can't recall it doing that when I set every one else up????? Have checked the mail store and she never gets on the list, even though I used the wizard. In her properties, the email addresses are blank. Have entered details manually and nothing happens??     - roaming user profile: odd behavior Hello, I have roaming user profiles setup in my office. the other day a user went to log in with a terminal service connection (they were off location), and it took a really long time for it to log on, about 5-7 minutes. And when it finally logged in, her desktop settings were different, and her connection to the exchange server was lost. It was like she had never logged in before, and was never setup to be a user. When she came in the next day and logged in locally, it was the same situation except she logged in much faster. So I reset her exchange connection and now she is working fine. I have concerns about why this happened, and was wondering if thier was any precautions I should be taking with my server right now. The terminal server a seperate machine than from my SBS.     - Poor data transmission performance in TS Hi group, we've used SBS 2000 for a year now with our Director who lives abroad being able to TS in admin mode to perform admin/ update duties on our Access XP database. There has always been a very very slight lag when he uses the database but now he say's it's around 5 times slower than normal & the excel spreadsheets, (that were no problem before), now has a lag. He can VPN into the Server & use RDP - it's just a performance issue. I've checked the RDP & Server settings - disable wallpaper, disable active desktop, use temp folders & delete on exit etc - setup for ultimum performance in other words!! There are no error messages & nothing in task manager sucks up resources. The annoying thing is that I can use the resources using our backuop adsl line with the same logon credentials just fine. He says there's been no patch updates put on recently & a spybot check proved clean. He's located in Italy & the office with the SBS Lan is in the UK.     - Inconsistant User ID requirements for various services I recently moved our small company to SBS 2003. After switching the clients over, a few folks have to use username@ourdomain.local in place of their regular username when logging into certain services (such as IMAP/SMTP, and even accessing sharepoint). The strange thing, is that not everyone has to use this. Myself, and a number of others can simply use their user name....any ideas on what is causing this inconsistency? The only thing I can see that might be common between those that are common with those affected, is the "default" address originally created was an alias (first.last@ourdomain.com as opposed to usernname@ourdomain.com) I haven't verified that it is true on all accounts, but I do know that changing the default address doesn't seem to make a difference after the fact.     - Warning 2: MS04-040/889293 Cumulative Patch breaks Veritas Backup Update Hi, The installation of yesterday's IE cumulative patch on my SBS2K server broke the Veritas Update function on BEWS 9.1. Removing the patch (I'm guessing it was removable because I installed Windows Installer 3 last week) restores the Veritas Update function. This function is highly convenient because it keeps track of already installed updates. One of the functions that the IE cumulative patch modifies is I-Frame, which the Veritas Tech Support guy said is used on the Veritas Update site.     - OT Outlook problem Hi guys, I have an interesting problem with one of my users. New mail does not show in her Inbox when it come in. She does not have work offline checked. I can see that Outlook is doing its send/receive thing every minute or two and it appears to get her mail. The mail does not show in her Inbox unless she does something else in Outlook, kinda like poking it with a stick. WHen you click on anything in Outlook or dismiss a reminder then all of her mail magically appears. Any ideas? Background info: SBS2003. She has XP Pro and her Outlook is the 2002 that was installed by SBS2000 before I upgraded the server. No one else is having this problem.     - FRUSTRATION when other Technical People Don't Give a :@&* Hi there, I wonder if anyone can shed some light on a really weird situation I have found myself in. Our company has taken over the maintenance contract for a server and a few PC's, but the server has been done in such a way that all the people who have looked at it, including me, are scratching our heads and all saying "I've never seen this before", and then walking away trying to not get too involved in it! Things have come to a head where there are issues to be dealt with and I am dumped right in the middle of trying to sort things out.. so see what you make of this.... The server is a reasonable spec P4 and it had Small Business Server 2000 media with it.... When you examine the system, you find that the thing has not been installed in a normal way..... The system appears to be running as a peer to peer network, no domain, active directory etc has been set up. Then to make things even weirder, it looks like Terminal server has been configured in some way (Application Mode), and the 90 days grace period has expired, but there is no way to check licences, nor are there ANY of the small business server 2000 tools installed. I am unable to access any of the network settings, even though I'm in under full admin rights, and the correct account... the whole setup appears to be a shambles... I was debating changing the Terminal server mode from Application mode to Administrator mode, but I am unsure of the benefits of doing this, plus, I don't want to do anything that may alter the settings of their custom software etc that is installed on this server. My gut feeling is that the easiest way forward here would be to just install a new server and configure the thing correctly for them. Introduce email under exchange (they have individual pop3 accounts on each pc) and get everything al organised centrally for backup etc.... but, I'd appreciate some feedback on any way I could get the current system sorted out better before I think of going down this route. In telephoning the people who supplied the server (I wont give their name here because I ain't as ignorant as they are) their attitude was "I didn't configure or install this, the guy who did, the manager is not in." When trying to find out when he would be in, or if he had a mobile number etc, the replies turned into a basic statement saying "Piss off we are not interested". I have to say that in the 20 plus years I have worked in the IT field, my attitude has always been to help other people in the same profession, no matter what the circumstances. We ALL need help at some point, yet, these sort of people never really seem to grasp this idea.. they just want the money and then sod all else. Any help or feedback would be very much appreciated.     - Users can't open .jpg files over INET Hello Everyone: My latest SBS 2K install seems to be really smooth, and the Trend CSM for SMB is just what the client was looking for. However.... (is there always a but or a however?) three of the workstations cannot open some, but not all, of the jpg files that they like to look at on the internet. They are all big race car fans, and like to look at the pictures from the previous weeks races. When the go to the site they get the opening page pictures, but when they click on "more" they get either nothing, or the little place holder that shows if you click on that settings in Tools, Inet options, Advanced If you right click on the area where the picture is suposed to be, you see that the properties are .jpg, that it has a file name, but in every case where the jpg file does not show up, the properties page says the file size is -1. Two of the client workstations are XP Pro, one is 2000 Pro. I have followed the steps in KB 283807 Any one seen this before, or know of a fix? Are there any issues with using the Defrag utility located in "Computer
Management" with a RAID system? We have a three-disk RAID 5 system on our
SBS machine.

Over the holidays I want to do some server upgrades/maintenance etc... and
this is one of the things I want to do. I just need to know if I need
different tools to do the job or will the tool that comes with Win2K do the
trick...

I'm not aware of any issues in running defrag as you describe - I've done it
many times with a variety of Dell raid controllers without any problems.
