Hey everyone,

Odd problem, looking for some guidance.

SBS2K SP4. DHCP server stopped working. Cannot get an IP address when I do
an ipconfig /renew. All clients are XP PRO SP1.

What is odd though is I'll restart an XP PC and then I'll get an IP address
at startup and it works.

But once I release it, I cannot get reassigned.

Some clients are wireless.

For clients with both wireless and a wired connection, at restart, the wired
connection get's an ip address, but the wired never get's an ip address. The
wireless stays at the 169.xx..xx format.

What should I look for?

Nothing in the event viewer indicating a problem.

I can manually assign addresses which work but assiging does not work.

I've restarted the server as well.

Thanks

John

Hi John -

Whenever I've seen this, it has only affected a single workstation and has
been cabling related (e.g. bad patch cable). In theory, it's possible that
you've got a patch cable gone bad between your server & switch. When you
reboot (and get an IP), what is your logon speed / network performance like?

Hi Chad,
Cable is ok. The clients, xp pro, are able to get DHCP addresses from a
second router I just turned on while I resolve this (the only DHCP server is
always the sbs2k when I setup). So I know udp packets are being sent and
received. I've looked at the scope options and they look fine. Still looking
today.
