I know this is similar to a few other posts, but I think I have a different
problem. My DHCP server has started shutting down. When I check the event log
the error says "Encountered another DHCP server with IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx".
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the gateway address for the cable company's DHCP
addresses, the only thing is I have a static address from them, and am fully
configured for static only. There are no other devices on the network that
could even hand out an IP. The cable company says everything looks fine. this
had been working fine until last week and then started acting up. Any help?

Thanks.

Are you running one NIC or two ?
Two is the recommended, and then even if SBS sees a DHCP Server on the
external NIC it won't complain.

I am running 2 NIC's, one external with a static IP and one internal with a
staic, private IP. Any ideas?

Is the cable company network device plugged directly into the second
nic, not into your internal network switch?

Hi Tim,

DNS on your external nic should ***only*** point to your server-IP.
Which IP is showing up in your log as being DHCP server as well?
Check the Scope options in DHCP server. 003, 006 and 044 should point to
your server-IP, 015 to you local domain name and 046 should have 0x8.
Is the DHCP scope 192.168.16.0?

The cable modem goes directly into the second nic.

Yea... Setting the external NIC to use the ISP's DNS server(s) is a
common mistake. See the following for a somewhat graphical
representation of what Marina suggested:

http://www.sbslinks.com/2000norouter.htm

In article <OW7jAEhwEHA.3832@TK2MSFTNGP10.phx.gbl>,
marina@roos.nodontwantspam.nl.com says...

You need to fix your dns as per www.smallbizserver.net 2 nic/router
networking article.

Is there any chance that some workstation has internet connection
sharing turned on? I thought that a workstation could act as a dhcp
server when ICS is turned on.
