I am having problems with clients trying to join the domain. When they try to
join they are showing little or no connectivity on their network connections.
XP clients with sp 2. When I go to the server I show a blue exclamation mark
on the server in the DHCP scope. When I look at the address leases I only
show ten active leases however when I right click on the server and click on
the statistics it shows 202 of 202 leases taken and 100% taken. I am stumped.
Something is not releasing the leases. All VPN clients can connect to the
server no problem. Are the VPN connections not releasing?

With 202 clients you're obviously not talking SBS.
try the microsoft.public.windows server.networking newsgroup

If I'm wrong please describe accurately your software, versions and
scenario.

There are actually 253 addresses that can be utilized by DHCP. I have 1.0.0.1
thru 10.0.0.254. I have four ranges that are excluded of which one is the
10.0.0.1 thru 10.0.0.9 for sbs. I have fifteen client licenses and I only
have seven clients showing on the address leases and six printers and one
scanner for a total of fourteen address leases. It is my understanding that
sbs doesn't count printers and such items in the total client liscense count
so I am good I think on the liscensing issue. The problem is that I have a
blue exclamation mark on the server and when I right click on it and click on
the server statistics in shows 202 addresses which is what I have left out of
the 253 less the four excluded ranges and 202 in use which equates to 100%
useage and 0% available which is the reason I am having the low connectivity
problem with adding a new XP computer to the domain. The only thing that has
changed on our domain is that I added two Vista business clients and they
connected fine but I have a sneaking suspiscion they may be the culprits.
Does this help some more?

Have you run:

Ipconfig /flushDNS
Ipconfig /registerDNS

Have the Vista machines got any additional connections set up ?

I have flushed and registered the clients and the server still has the
addresses leased at full capacity. There are no additional connections for
the vista business machines. Is the DHCP database possibly corrupt? Why would
the address leases only show 7 machines and the statistics show 202 of 202
available addresses taken. I am working diligently but frankly I am 99% sure
that the vista clients caused the DHCP problems. There were sweeping changes
to DHCP and the addition of NAP to vista that were to be incorporated into
Longhorn however I think they didn't fully test compatablity with 2000 and
2003 servers. I just don't know how to fix this problem and it really makes
me frustrated with Microsoft. Sorry for venting. Any further ideas.

Ok, No idea why it would be happening.
If it were the Vista Machines ( other than an aberration ) we'd be hearing
lot's of complaints about it already.

Anyway.
Try reducing the lease time.
Then clearing up the DNS both Forward and Reverse
Flush and register again.

if that doesn't work maybe some of the folks over at windows.server.dns can
help
