Merging two domains
I was hired a few months ago to a company that currently is using two
domains. The SBS2K server (domain1) is being used as a web and file server.
I don't know the whole history of why they did this, but at this point some
of the users and all the computers have been moved over to the other domain
(domain2). Our ultimate goal is to get rid of domain1. Domain2 has two
DC's--one is Win2K3 Enterprise (our Exchange server) and the other is Win2K
Advanced.
We want to:
1) Migrate the users and settings from domain1 to domain2
2) Set up a DFS between the SBS2K and a Win2K Advanced server in domain2
3) Change both domains from mixed mode to Win2K mode.
It seems to me that combining the two domains into one forest will make
both of these goals easier (or at least the DFS).
What "gotchas" can we expect in attempting these? Is my basic thinking
sound? I've tried to review as much info and documentation as possible, but
I'm not 100% sure about all of this.
Thanks for your help.

W2003 Terminal Server
Hi,
I have installed a Windows 2003 Server that I want to use as an terminal
server. Now Microsoft tells me that I have to buy additional licenses for
the 2003 server (CAL & TS licenses) although SBS2000 has built in licenses.
Anyone an idea how I can resolve this because my client does not want to pay
additional 2000 euro for a few home workers.

DHCP
One evening a computer started to download several GB from a internet http
site. I have checked the computer for traces of who it could be(Documents and
settings, and ranked the last time edited). I brought in the computer to take
a look at it. I could not find anything on it. There had been downloaded
nearly 13gb from a internet site so it had to be stored some place. Stil I
cant find anything. I also checked out in event viewer on my domain
controller who had logged in this evening. I have checked out these users
what they have been doing, and "cleared" them.
I then started to take a look at my DHCP list. It shows that the computer I
brought in for a check had got this IP adress during the night(I saw this
when I looked up the DHCP lease time). I belive that the correct IP adress
may be stored in a old dhcp list. I have complete backup of my system, so how
do I restore a old dhcp list without confusing the one that is running today?

Business Contact Manager update
All,
Is anyone using, or supporting a Client using BCM?
If so, how have you dealt with backup, or where it puts the database(s)
it creates?
I have just got a copy, and put it (admittedly on a s/a machine) to see
what you get, and to get an idea what I will be taking on support-wise.
Standalone, it has dumped the MSDE on the local machine.. Fine as I do
not have a Server, or MS SQL Server here.
Will it discover and use the SBS component? - Talking SBS2000 for the
first Client who will get it.
Many resources (even Microsoft) seem to be dated back to 2003, when it
first came out. They suggest it is a little sluggish, and it appears so
on a W2k 2.4Ghz P4.
Any thoughts, and caveats, gratefully received. - I do NOT want to end
up with data on client machines if I can help it.
TIA,

Cannot see network shares via VPN
I am running Windows 2000 SBS and have setup Routing and Remote Access so
users can login via a vpn.
I also have network shares that are being created via a group policy.
When a user logs into the vpn they can intermittently view the files on the
mapped network shares. When the user searches the network via the IP address
everything works and even the mapped shares start working. This lead me to
believe that it was a NetBIOS issue so as a test I added the servers and the
local IP addresses to the laptop's hosts file, but that did not fix the
problem.
What am I missing?

Fax service starts then dies
I've started having problems recently with the fax services on Windows Server
2003. The service had been running fine form me for over a year. Now it can
hardly run for 30 minutes without crashing and restarting only to crash
again.
My application event log has the following errors reported:
Faulting application fxssvc.exe, version 5.2.2581.0, faulting module

The Fax Service encountered a problem and needed to close.
Error Code: 0x00000000
This error code indicates the cause of the error.
A Windows Error Report was generated with full details about the problem.
The Fax service will restart now.
I am at a complete loss as to what could be causing these errors. I've tried
clearing the fax que and even replaced fax modems but the problem keeps
returning. Please help.

DHCp in backup domain controller
Hi
I have recently discovered that SBS2000 can have backup domain controllers
so I decided to promote one other server to create a fault tolerant
environment.
I have ran dcpromo on the second server and it seems to be working fine.
However SBS2000 is also distributing DHCP addresses.
How should I configure the backup DC to act as a backup DHCP server?
I wanted that, in case of a SBS2000 failure, the backup dc also distributed
the IP addresses.
Thanks

Make Lots of Money Quick, Easy & LEGAL with Paypal
AS SEEN ON OPRAH!!
PAYPAL VERIFIES THAT THIS $6 INVESTMENT SCHEME IS 100% LEGAL AND IS A BIG HIT THIS YEAR SEE
THEIR NOTE BELOW OR ASK THEM DIRECTLY... THIS SCHEME MIGHT TAKE 15-30 MINUTES AND JUST $6,
BUT IT IS 100% WORTH IT TO MAKE THOUSANDS SO QUICKLY. THIS IS NOT ANOTHER SCAM THAT
TAKES LOTS OF YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY; THIS IS A NO RISK INVESTMENT THAT WILL MAKE YOU
THOUSANDS OF DOLLAR VERY EASILY AND QUICKLY.

Get rid of student loans, get out of debt, make money to go traveling!!
Making Money - This Really Works Keep in mind that everything stated below is 100% legal as stated by the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161).
A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of pounds within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! : Anyway it said that you have to send $1.00 to each of the following names on the list, stated at the end of this article using Paypal. You don?t have to be preferred or verified to transfer and receive money, so you lose no money through transfers. Now honestly, what is six pounds, especially out of a Paypal account. In exchange you will make thousands in the first few months. You then place your own name and email address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands of newsgroups)
No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it.
I know that you have seen this on Oprah or even received numerous messages about this simple program and have probably just deleted them, I know I have!
But for some unknown reason this time I decided to give it a try.
Please give it an honest effort, you will not be disappointed and will be very glad you did when it starts to work. Remember, all you're going to be out of pocket is about the cost of a couple of coffees with the opportunity of banking thousands of pounds into your PayPal account!
I sent out my measly $6.00 to the six people on the list. Well GUESS WHAT!!... Within 7 days, I started: getting $$$$$ in my account!
I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the CASH just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00.
By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I had over $15,060.00 and it's still growing.
This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $26,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00 and 6 minutes to send it out. This program WORKS, all you have to do is try it, and waste some pocket change. You could find six dollar lying around the house. There is absolutely nothing you could lose. Just follow the 3 basic steps below to make thousands in just a few days, weeks, or months, it all depends on how many posts of this letter you put in message boards or send as emails.
Here?s how it works: When you post 200 messages all over the internet, it is estimated that at least 15 people will respond and send you a $1.00. ($15.00) Those 15 will Post 200 Posts each and 225 people send you $1.00 ($225.00) Those 225 people Post 200 Posts each and 3,375 people send you $1.00 ($3,375.00) Those 3,375 post 200 posts each and 759,375 people send you $1.00 ($759,375.00) At this point your name drops off the list, but so far you have received $813,615.00. Note: I'm not saying this is going to make everyone 800 grand, but lets say even 1 person out of 200 tries this program, you are still going to make 50,000 pounds anywhere from 1 month to 6 months max!!!!!
You can also copy this letter and email it to some of your friends and associates, it?s a guarantee that some of them will be interested and give it a go, the more that do the more you make.
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Immediately send $1.00 to each of the six people on the list using Paypal, and in the comment (Subject) section type "Please add me to your list". Below are the emails that you transfer the money into:
Paypal accounts to send 1 dollar to :
1) love-1987-blond@hotmail.com
2) apple-intel-fan@hotmail.com
3) richardschoofs@mac.com
4) moomansion@moomansion.karoo.co.uk
5) Tucson_steven@yahoo.com
6) acord@charter.net
2.After sending the money to the first 6 people on the list, you can remove the name next to the #1 on the list and move the rest of the names up one position (#2 becomes #1, #3 becomes #2, etc?) Then place your name in the #6 position. Then save it.
3. When you have completed the instructions, take this letter and then go to (Google, Yahoo,...)
and type in (Making Money Message board, Money Message Board, Money Forum, Free money Forum, or anything along those lines that are forums) and start posting your copy of this message at least 200 times, to as many unique message boards as you can, or more. The more times you post this at a unique board, the more money you will make.
You can email your message to as many people you can but remember, the more you post and email the more money you make!
Keep a copy of this letter so you can use it a second time. Post it out again in six months, but Post it with
the addresses you receive with each pound. It will work better the second time. Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual Internet. Remember, play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will work.
If you don't have a paypal account you can copy the link below and follow the instructions. It?s totally secure, costs you nothing to set-up and is a very useful way of transferring and more importantly receiving money. You will be amazed every time you check your account to see how much money has been paid into it, and this money goes straight in without any deductions. To sign up for Paypal follow this link, just make sure that you use the same email address for your paypall account that you put in this list, that?s how your payments are made. https://www.paypal.com/uk/mrb/pal=B3WZU7GC4UWKU
4. This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the instructions. In this business your product is not solid and tangible,
itps a service. You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. However, the money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income which is made from people like you and me asking to be included in that list.
5. This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to #####le 18 Sec.
1302 & 1241 of the Postal Lottery laws. Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again and again.
This is the biggest growing internet money making scheme on the net, you will see that as you post your letter to the message boards, but that just
proves how successful it really is.
6. Good luck, don?t forget to follow the instructions correctly and spend the money wisely!!

roaming profile issue
Our terminal server users have roaming profiles as we use two TS's load
balanced. Today I had a problem with one of the users while he was loading
his profile and in a nutshell, something is really whacked on the term
server he was logging onto now. The profile server has the correct copy of
his domain profile that he should be using. However, whenever he logs onto
this particular server (the one he was logging onto when all hell broke
loose) he only gets a very standard desktop - it is not pulling his roaming
profile at all. When I look at the profiles stored on that machine (a
windows 2003 standard terminal server) - for some reason there is two
profiles listed there for this one user. I see one good one (based on the
size it is showing), (marked status="backup"??) and one bad one (marked
status = "temporary". ) This "temporary" profile seems to be the one that is
being displayed for the user now when he logs in - and of course it has none
of the stuff he needs...
So, I deleted the good one, because it can be pulled down again from the
profile server when he logs onto the domain. I then attempted to delete the
"temporary" profile - but when I click on it, the "delete" button is greyed
out! The only button available is the "Change Type" and if I go in there,
the local profile option is greyed out. Where can I delete this profile as I
am at a loss of how to get rid of this thing! Is it stored in the registry
someplace? A quick search in there for his username yielded no results that
made sense to me...
Once I can get rid of this "temp" profile, I am sure the next time he logs
on to the domain on this machine, it will pull down and create another
locally cached copy from the profile server...

New hardware for www.smallbizserver.net
Hi all,
Yesterday I moved the site to new hardware and into the XS4ALL Datacenter in
Amsterdam. The new server for www.smallbizserver.net is installed at XS4ALL
we are connected to a backbone with multiple 2.5 Gb/s connections, with a
total capacity of 10-15 Gb/s. XS4ALL has multiple redundant connections to
the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), various transit parties and direct
connections to major Dutch ISPs. This will do for a long time.
The site is running on HP Proliant 380 and has Windows 2003 R2 x64
installed. The backend is running SQL 2005 x64 Standard Edition.
I hope you will notice a big performance increase. In theory we should be
able to handle more then a million hits per day...

Upgrading HD in peer domain controller
Hi all,
I have an SBS2000 box and a W2k box running as a peer domain
controller/file&print server next to it. The SBS box does its SBS
thing, and the W2k box handles antivirus server duties, SUS (soon to be
upgraded to WSUS), and has a RAID5 data array in it for our company
files. We've been extremely pleased with the redundancy of having two
DCs in the domain.
Everything is working fine at the moment, but the boot HD in the W2k
server recently exhibited some unsavory behavior and I've lost
confidence in it.
I've already got a couple of new drives (going with new 9GB SCSI drives
in a software RAID 1 configuration this time), and I put one in during
weekend downtime and loaded the OS and applications on it, but I
haven't let it speak with the SBS2000 box yet. I've kept all of the
naming conventions the same.
My question is, what is going to be the easiest way to make the actual
swap from the system on the old drive to the system on the new drive?
Should I treat it as a disaster and try to restore AD from a backup?
Or should I divorce the old install from the domain and then bring the
new system up fresh?
Oh, and I can't just RAID 1 the existing drive because it is slightly
larger than the replacements. Tag: Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Tag: 177340
Allow Chaching of Files in this Shared Folder
Hello,
I have two hard drives inside my server.
Despite the fact that I continually UNCHECK "Allow Chaching of Files in this

setting keeps re-enabling itself after a period of time (sometime days or
weeks).
Strangely, I never have this prblem with Network Shares held on the "E:\"
drive. Those shares always seem to have the Caching setting unchecked.
Can anyone help me permanently disable caching of folders on the "C:\"
Drive?
Amongst other things this gives me a 1525 Error on each workstation during
the login process: "Windows has detected that Offline Caching is enabled on
the Roaming Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline
Caching must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored."

reinstall I found and corrected the following:
Incorrect Binding Order on the NICs (1 local, 1 Internet)
nbtstat -n revealed a conflict between two instances of GVFC on the local
NIC and the Master Browser bound to both NICs. I set the Internet NIC not to
use NetBios over TCP/IP and to look to the local NIC address for WINS.
nbtstat -n now reveals:

SBS 2000 TO Windows Server 2003
Hello there,
I would like to know the cost involved in upgrading from SBS 2000 to
SBS 2003 and applying a transition pack to Windows Server 2003
Standard.
from what I see, we were licensed only for say xx users, but now that
number has nearly quintupled.....how much would it cost if we did a SBS
2000---> SBS 2003 --> Windows Server 2003 upgrade/transition.
the other way would be to buy the licenses separately...but if we did
that, we wouldn't be able to transfer the licenses for which we have
paid for already. that seems to be costing us plenty..just wanted to
check if there is a cheaper/easier way out...
any suggestions?
thank you.

Workstation Failer
I have an SBS 2003 Standard Network with 10 workstations. The system has
Symantec Enterprise Edition Version 8 on the server and workstations. One of
the workstation kept restarting so we moved it to a casual user and replaced
it with a new system. Now the new system keeps restating with the error (see
beloe) in the apps logs. The System in question has a UPS and the same App
as the other workstations except an Accounting Application & Bank Software
with a Serial Modem. We have also change to modem and driver. The error
shown below mentions services.exe but more often it is outloo.exe had
appears in the logs.
Any ideas would be greatly apreciated

Force a domain logon ...
I was logged onto another company's terminal server yesterday and they have
their WIn2K term server set so that the user can NOT log onto the machine
locally - a good idea... (i..e. the user could not change the domain name
to the local server name on the sign-on screen) I noticed that the domain
was already set there AND it was greyed out. Also the username had the
domainname preceeding it i.e. "domainname\username".
Is this a setting in group policy because I would only want this to be for
some of our users who I do not want to allow to log on to a terminal server
using the local domain name (machine name).
Thanks,

default print settings not being "held"
On of our company's XP Pro SP2 machines has a strange ongong issue...
If the user changes his default printer from the "printers and faxes" app,
then goes into Word or Excel etc... and attempts to print, the original
default printer is the printer that is used by default, NOT the one he just
changed it to! Then, when the user selects the printer he wants from the
list, he has to then also change all the print settings as it does not bring
over the defaults set up for that printer i.e. paper size, orientation etc..
etc... This is a real pain!
Has anyone seen this issue before and if so, any ideas on a fix?

faxing long distance within the same area code
Over the past number of years we have attempted to fax to numbers that are
considered long distance but within the same area code. We have run so many
experiments throught what appears to be the proper procedure but have
ultimately failed to make connections under the above circumstances. I
thought I would make one more pass at the subject. Any info would be greatly
appreciated. Tag: Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Tag: 177311

Routing web requests to a specific internal IP
We have two webservers in the SBS 2k domain. One is the 10.0.0.2 server (the
SBS) and the other is an application server (10.0.0.3).
I want to route requests from the web on ip A.B.C.E to the app server while
the main web server continues to handle requests on ip A.B.C.D
I've set up the router (Speedtouch 510 ADSL modem) to map from ip ABCE to
10.0.0.3 but it isn't working. Do i need to set something up in the routing
table on SBS to achieve this?

SBS2000, slow copying files from server to XP Pro client
Had one SBS2K server on the network. Everything was good, speedwise
from the domain server, the SBS2K server, to the XP PRO sp2 client. I
turned SMB Signing off. I added a basic Windows 2000 server to the
network and now the copying is very slow from the domain server to the
XP Pro client. I added a Windows 2003 server to the domain and the
same issue continues. This is happening with all XP Pro clients.
Can the basic Windows 2000 server, which is not a domain server, have
changed the SMB settings? Where should I look, what policy should I
look at.
I thought the slow copying from the domain server to the client had
been taken care of but something changed.
Your responses are appreciated, new to this newsgroup. Tag: Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Tag: 177301

Event ids 1030 and 1058 on client PCs after log on
Hi
I have Windows XP and Windows 2000 client PCs logging onto a small business
2000 server. Everytime the client logs on, we get the following event ids in
the event viewer of the client PCs: Eventid: 1030 Source: Userenv - Windows
cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects and eventid: 1058 Source:
Userenv - Windows cannot access teh file gpt.ini for GPO CN = {31B...}
They can work away as normal but the events keep appearing in the
application log in event viewer.
Any ideas why these appear?

Pop3 Connector duplicate mails
Hello,
I have a SBS2003 server, we use a Global POP
account which is configured in the POP Account settings.
If there are several users in the To or CC we become this mail 2,3 times
or more (I think as much as there are users)
In this case i'm thinking it could be an issue with the POP3 Connector
on SBS?
Any info would be grateful.
Thanks
Best Regards
