    - Exmerge Question I have an SBS4.5 Server, just bought a new server and installed SBS2000. We are going to build a whole new domain, pretty much start from scratch. We are going to use EXMERGE to backup the old emails from the 4.5 domain. Then we are going to use Exmerge to import those to our new domain. Here's the question. On the 4.5 domain the usernames on the network (and mailboxes) were the users first name only, on the new domain we are going to first initial last name usernames.     - Backup Domain in SBS I've two Servers located in two different Countrys. One is SBS(AD), One is Win2000 server(member server, no AD). There are using the Linksys VPN Router to connect these two computers(network). The internet connection in Win2000 site is not too stable, it will drop the connect anytime and the VPN connection will drop at the same time. When it is lost, it will be caused a big Problem. The client computers on the site on Win2000 server will not be abled to access the files whatever that is located in SBS side or Local Side. (i think that is the security problem.) Can this problem be fixed by me promoting the win2000 server as a backup domain? After promoting, what will happen when the internet connection drop again?     - Outlook/Exchange query hi all we have a confusing problem with Outlook/Exchange. emails are all working correctly internally and externally. exchange backups all fine etc etc. only problem is email previewing or opening of emails seems to be very SLOW. ie too slow we have just upgraded with HP proliant ml350 + 9 HP D530 ultraslims so it should be a heck of a lot faster. to confuse things we have looked more closely and founfd that the previewing of emails is only an issue with internal emails. ie if we send an email from our office to theirs the process works fine. if they send one from one staff memeber to the next it seems to take ages. v.odd - have checked name resolution for eny DNS mishaps but all seems correct. tia Jeremy when the client sets up we just upgraded the whole network and then discovered the network switch was in fact a 16 port hub.     - GPO on member TS I am setting up a Win2K terminal server member to a SBS2K domain. On the TS, we will need to have a few different groups created. Some of the users will need access to run certain applications, while others not. I have followed KB263070, but when I attempt to click on the Group Policy Tab I recieve the error "The Domain controller for Group Policy operations is not available. You may cancel this ioeratn for this session or retry using one of the following domain controller choices: The one with the Operations Master token for the PDC emulator The one used by the Active Directory Snap-ins Use any available domain controller.     - SBS 2000 & ICS setup questions Hi all, I have a couple of SBS 2000 & ICS questions. 1. What is the impact of changing the server's IP address after SBS setup? Is there a tool to propogate the change across all dependant services (like Novell's INETCFG)? 2. Do users need to login to the server to use the Internet gateway? I am doing a phased install where some users will remain on the old Novell/Sygate LAN for awhile, and some will migrate to SBS right away. I also checked several texts and web sites and they all say the same thing about doing the setup - i.e. setup the addresses to filter in Exchange System Manager under Global Settings>Message Delivery>Filtering and enable filtering under Servers>Protocols>SMTP>SMTP Virtual Server. I tested that filtering in accordance with Knowledge Base article 313395 and that showed that the test message was blocked. My problem is that when I test email filtering by sending an email from a remote location that is supposed to be filtered the message comes through. I tried re-installing Exchange and I have service pack 3 installed but nothing I've done results in the email being filtered as I think it should be.     - Problem with System Processes One of my client's servers, I have 2 processes running causing my CPU Usgaes are: "System Idle Process" and "System". This is causing the Hard drives to constantly work and grind. Bouncing the server did nothing. They came right back using at least 50% of the CPU and the HardDrives are worling overtime.     - SBS 2k User Wizard wont create email box I have just installed sbs 2k, patched it all up and then tried to create users. The users show up in the Active directory, they sign in and can authenticate, but for some reason the 4 of the 5 user do not have email boxes created within exchange. I went straight through the setup wizard, too all the defaults, got the message when finished that an email box had been setup. When I look at the properties of a user onthe exchange tab it shows the exchange server and the mailbox name/alias, but within the exchange manager only one of the boxes shows up. Any ideas????     - Outlook 2002/Exchange - "Object could not be found" problem I am running Small Business Server 2000 w/Exchange 2000, Outlook(XP) 2002 SP2 and IE6 SP1. When I attempt to send a message from IE6 using the Tools, Mail and News pull down menu and then New Message, Send a Link, or Send Page...when I select any one of the 3 options, I get an error dialog box that says Microsoft Exchange at the top and inside the box it says: The Object could not be found. I can send mail from every where else except IE6. This problem occured after installing, for Outlook 2002, either SP1, SP2 or the security updates from the Office Updates on Microsoft website.     - moving exchange 2k mailboxes from SBS to full server 2000 My appologies in advance if this has been covered already, I looked through the archive. We've got exchange 2k working well on SBS. A separate server 2k (full) (duh) is happy as a backup dc. I have the Exchange 2000 Move Server Method instructions, all 23 steps, they seem to make sense. However I am wondering how SBS is going to react to changing the 5 FSMO roles (step 14). Also the last few steps concern demoting the current dc, I suspect this should not be attempted until we are ready to turn SBS off. Does anyone have any experience in this situation?     - ISDN Dialup Ok, Heres the problem. SBS 2000,all latest packs and patches applied, one nic, internal isdn card for net and e- mail. No problem connecting, e-mail is fine on all clients. Web access is the problem. Sometimes you get a home page up sometimes not. If you are successful and get web access it does not last more than a few pages before getting timeout messages from ISA Server. Even though the connection is still up. Hope this makes sense.     - exchange 2000 Hi guys, Solved the previous issue with not being able to mount the message stores after a tape restore. Now the exchange is bakc up and running i can send email out through DNS, but cannot recieve any of the emails through the pop accounts set up. I have tried recreating accounts, but made no difference. Email can be recieved through outlook from other locations, but not onto the server or the internal network.     - Urgent--Userinit.exe error after loading SP4 We have deployed SP4 to 5 of our SBS customers and are now getting errors trying to logon the server as the administrator locally or with RDP. The error message is: Userinit.exe--Ordinal not found The ordinal 175 could not be located in the dynamic link library userenv.dll. After we select OK, we get a blank desktop without a start menu or anything. I can hit CTRL-ALT-Delete and get the task manager to come up and I can logoff.     - SBS 2000 initiated Internet traffic causing $300+ ISDN bill - Help! I recently replaced an old Novell server with SBS 2000. I just got my phone bill for my ISDN line (I don't have access to DSL or cable) and it was over $300 (instead of $75-$80). I suspect something in SBS 2000 is connecting to the internet every 15 minutes or so day and night. I have a Netopia ISDN router that connects to my ISP on demand and drops the connection after 5 minutes of no traffic. Formerly all workstations sent DNS requests directly to ISP, now they go to Sever 2000, and it forwards them on to ISP. (so DNS seems to be one suspect.) I use Exchange's POP3 connecter, but have it set up to check mail only twice a day, so it can't be that. I have disabled Windows Update yesterday, but the router still shows about 20 hours a day on connection time! Can you think of anything else in Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 that would connect to the Internet often? Thanks in advance for any help.     - Router Long post, sorry BAH! I can't reuse my old router with the new cable modem. =( I'm in the market for a new router and would like some input from everyone on what they have had good experience with. I already know the next question: What are you trying to do with it? Here goes. Running SBS2000 and in the past have had it locked down tighter than me trying to get into jeans from high school. Not because I'm some security guru, actually quite the opposite. It was locked down because I didn't know how to open things safely. So what I HAD was a DSL Router that grabbed a dynamic IP from the ISP, hit an internal hardware firewall, ran it through NAT into ISA, then to the client. When doing a port probe the entire setup would show up as 'stealth'. (tested using the GRC probe test, not a favorite by all) All we used the DSL for was Internet and retrieval of Pop3 mail Via the connector. Thats where we were. Here's where we are/want to go: We now have a 2Mb/768Kb connection via Cable with a static IP. As mentioned, my old router (Flowpoint) won't work with the new cable modem. When I plug the new modem into my WAN NIC on SBS I can get it running, however despite setting up packet filters to block 80 and 443 they show as wide open using the port probe test. I figure with a decent router I can block those ports or turn them off to a DMZ machine. My hope is that we can use this new static IP for all the toys we've been avoiding to this point: VPN, Outlook Web Access, SMTP. So I need a router that will allow me to use these services without needing to buy additional software, stand on my head, and chant various incantations in reverse. Options I've (lightly) investigated: Netgear FVS318. appears it only supports 8 connections via VPN with a netgear on both sides and additional software. Linksys BEFSX41. only supports 2 VPN connections. Heard 'ify' reviews of Linksys in general. The Catch: Like many of you, we are a small business. Under 20 people. We don't have dedicated IT staff, we don't have an official "IT" budget. While I understand the 2 products I mentioned are very 'residential' type products, I don't have a bottomless pit of money to go by a Cisco router and the tech that goes with it. Despite that, we DO want to invest in the right product for our needs. If that means I need to spend more than $150, then I will. Thanks for any/all input.     - New SBS Server - How To Change Over?? Hi, I've purchased a new all singing, all dancing server and want to transfer everything over. I could rebuild the new one, which would mean I'd need to recreate the root of the domain (is that right) or can I just backup the original and restore absolutely everything to the new one??     - NTBackup Woes Hello, Using the NTBackup method from smallbizserver.net, but 19/20 times backup is failing and saying "The operation was not performed because no unused media was available" in the logs. Most/Some of the time the logs don't even get emailed to me, which should happen everytime when using the vbscript file to email the logs too me. My backup.bat is as follows, I haven't changed it that much from what is on the smallbizserver.net site. Logs are emailed occasionally so the script / bat file must be functional. I have spend a couple of days messing with the removable storage MMC with varying degrees of failure. This is running on a fully patched SP4 win2k member server.     - Security audit failures and Thanks!! Firstly - big props to Jann, Chad and David for confirming the server attacks prob in an earlier post. Thanks for the good advice - nice to have a hand climbing this bloody steep learning curve! Am battenning down the hatches on the server, so to speak, today. Another quick one (I hope): Security Log in Admin Console showing multiple Security audit failures for a number of workstations on the network.     - Deploying Outlook 2002 Hi, I just setting up an SBS system and I've lost the darned CD for Service pack 1 for SBS, I do have the Outlook 2002 CD that accompanies it though. I have downloaded the SP1 pack from microsoft.com, but this does not include outlook 2002. How can I add outlook 2002 to be distributed to the workstations, as the original SP1 CD did this automatically.     - Cant logon / WINS / DNS Our client says his server went down overnight due to powercuts (even though he has UPS on it) partway through his backup and now most of the workstations can't logon. The 2 XP workstations seem able to logon but all the Windows 98 machines (about 5 of them) bar 1 can't logon. "The domain password you supplied is incorrect or access to your logon server has been denied" I have noticed the following problems that might be related: WINS console says "Cannot find WINS server" "The network address is invalid", although the wins service is running and according the the status page is responding. Deleting and restarting WINS.mdb etc has not helped. Event Viewer: System log shows a number of event 5775 DNS deregistration errors for what appears to be the global catalog. DNS log shows an error "DNS could not open the active directory" I have tried to recreate the DNS zone in accord with KB294328 but the global catalog and other microsoft info does not get recreated. This did not solve the WINS error above anyway. All workstations seem to be able to ping the server successfully using ip address and name. pinging the server name gives the correct ip address. BTW. DNS was failing the 2 tests in the console but I checked the DNS server on the 2nd NIC (internet) and it was set to 127.0.0.1 instead of 192.168.16.2, changing that seems to have fixed that problem.     - Tons of Temp files being created I was running out of space on my SBS Partition and couldn't figure out what was consuming the space until last week. There were 10,000 temp files created in the Windows\Temp directory. The files have the name configuration UPS followed by a 5 digit number .tmp. Does anyone have confirmation what program is creating this file? I'm sorta thinking the APC UPS program running on the server....     - Web Proxy Logs Hi all, Hope somebody can help, When I receive server status reports, on the Web Proxy Report the cs-username always comes up as anonymous, although I get the ip address of the client machine but not the name of the user.     - Workgroup has no internet Just finished a new install of Small Business Server. Everything works fine except there are two Windows Home PC's that are a workgroup on the LAN. All other workstations that are part of the domain have internet connectivity. What do I need to do to permit the XP Home machines to access the internet? They can ping the server and each other.     - Roaming profiles Hi All, We are having a little problem with roaming profiles. We have a SBS 2000 server and several Win98 and Win XP workstations. Everything works fine, but the logon on the Windows XP workstations seems to last forever. Ik takes up to 4 min. to logon. On the Windows 98 machine with the same profile it goes very smoothly. Has anyone experienced this problem and has a suggestion to solve it? We have a 100 Mbit network connection so that shouldn't be the problem. Thnx.     - Access from external via Internet Hi everybody! We are trying to access a SBS 2000 server from the Internet (Terminal Services, Webaccess, Internet page) but we do not get any connection! However, I can ping the DSL adapter and get a response. On a test server we use another DSL provider and another modem but the same ports are open and everything works fine! Who can tell me where to look for this problem? Technical details: -SBS 2000 all servicepacks, updates -DSL via USB-DSL Modem -2 network adapters, one for the network, one as a spare and disabled -Access to the internet without any problem Is there any possibility to check if this is a provider problem?     - Outlook closing down straight after opening? Hello, Yesterday almost every member of our 14 person company had a problem that when ever they opened Outlook XP it would close down as soon as anything was clicked on.     - MSDTC Service hogging CPU time We have Small Business Server 2000 installed on a Dell Server. The server was re-started after routine maintanance but now the we are experiencing symptoms exactly the same as those listed in MS acticle Q307309. Random services are in "stopping" and "starting" states, with the MSDTC service taking up 98% of CPU time the PC is very slow and the Exchange services are failling to start. The resolution listed in acticle Q307309 suggests that the Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service needs to be set to Manual, but in this case it already is! It is technically possible to change your NDRs - but doing so natively in
Exchange2k requires creating custom event sinks.
