Currently have an SBS 2000 domain that has not been maintained well and is on
old hardware. I have built an entirely new network domain with Windows 2003
Server, Exchange 2003 etc... I created new User ID's etc... moved all data,
exported all mailboxes to new Exchange Organization and all work fine. I
would like to install Windows 2003 Server on the existing SBS 2000 server and
join it to the new domain as a member server. There is one application
however that I would rather not re-install (a manufacturing package) that
resides on this server. Is there a way to upgrade the operating system to
Windows 2003 Server (no need to preserve anything associated with email,
active directory etc...) and keep the application installed? Thanks for any
ideas you may have.

No way to do this that I know of. SBS 2000 must the Primary Domain
Controller in the network and can't be demoted to member server status (or a
secondary DC) or "upgraded" to Windows 2003 server.

That's what I feared. Thanks for the help.

actually Merv, I'm not so sure the guy can't do this (VMWare time again
methinks).

All SBS applications would need to be removed from the box, which is fine,
the OP suggests only a certain app needs to be retained. You should then be
able to upgrade to W2K3 (non-SBS). It would retain the existing AD but it's
then simply a matter of DCPromo'ing out of the DC role (last DC in domain),
and join to the new AD.

BUT, I haven't tried yet. AND it wouldn't be very tidy, I think the SBS2000
component removal would leave some bits in place, AND it's quite likely the
retained app will spit chips, should the process succeed.

Could be SG. But when he tries to DC Promo, I *think* he'll get a message
that SBS 2000 doesn't support it. But I've never tried it either.

at the time of DCPromoing out of the AD (destroying the AD) he won't be
running SBS, just vanilla W2K3.

hi,

Tech issues aside, how abt licensing? Seems there are a few similar
threads around as users move to SBS2k3, and then wonder why
they should leave a perfectly sufficient server license sitting on the
shelf?

There's the upgrade to Win2k3 question (retail box since no other
way to upgrade licenses) and the clean install approach where one
only installs the Win2k component and joins to another SBS2k3
domain.

But is this illegal?

Are you asking if it's illegal (from a licensing point of view) to reuse a
W2K server as a member server to an SBS box? Absolutely not.
