I am running SBS 2000 and Exchange 2000 in a non-profit organisation with 20
users.

Over the last week or so we have had problems with retrieving external mail.
Internal mail can be sent and received without problem and external mail can
be sent but Exchange is not retrieving external mail from the ISP.

The problem seems to be with the Microsoft Connector for POP3 Mailboxes. The
service starts and seems to run ok but then after a while the status field
says it's stopping and it just hangs in this state. If I right click on the
service, all of the options to start, stop, restart etc are greyed out and
the only way to get out of this is to reboot the server. All of the other
Exchange related service seem to be running fine.

I have checked the Application Log and the only entries for the POP3
Connector apart from when it crashes are to say that it is starting and then
that it has started successfully. These were after a reboot of the server
last Tuesday and it worked ok until Friday.

This morning the status of the Connector said 'Stopping' and it has been
stuck there for the past 3 hours. The Application Log reports Event 1002 and
says "The service started the shutdown sequence... ".

Has anybody experienced this before? Can someone give me some advice on what
is causing the problem and how to resolve it?

Thanks!

Hi there

I have experienced all sorts of problems with the POP3 connector in SBS2000
and was unable to obtain suitable soloutions, as a result following advice
from these newsgroups we decided to move to a third party connector called
POPCON (www.christensen-software.com/popcon.htm) which is downloadable from
the internet, is cheap and has proved to be 100% reliable since we started
using it over 18 months ago.

You might want to reinstall the POP3 Connector. First, delete the POP3
folder (c:\program files\backoffice\connectivity\pop3 connector) to get a
clean reinstall without errors. Then reinstall per Susan's post this thread:
