Connector for POP3 Mailboxes service terminated unexpectedly

We're running SBS2000 with all of the latest service packs and updates
available from the Microsoft Update site. The other day our server logged the
following event The Microsoft Connector for POP3 Mailboxes service terminated
unexpectedly. Event ID 7031. Whenever the service is restarted, it stops
again about 7 minutes later. No other services are affected and no other
events are logged - I've turned up the POP3 logging to maximum. Our server is
unable to run the POP3 service long enough to download all of our mail - so
we don't get any - its all still in our ISPs mailbox.
I've scanned for viruses and nothing found.

Any help with fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dave,

I suspect you have a "malformed" piece of mail in your mailbox(es) at your
ISP. You might also look in:

c:\program files\Microsoft Backoffice\connectivity\POP3
connector\Incoming

to see if there are any messages there that are problematic.

You might also need to reinstall the POP3 Connector...

REINSTALL POP3 CONNECTOR

Remove the POP3 Connector from Add/Remove Programs, delete the \program
files\pop3 connector directory, then reinstall. Remove the POP3 Connector
from Control Panel | Add/Remove Software | Microsoft Small Business Server
2000. Click Next through the install wizard until you get to the Component
Selection screen. Expand Small Business Server. Expand Connectivity. To
the left of POP3 Connector select Remove or Reinstall and finish the wizard.
You may need the original SBS CDs to complete this procedure.

Thanks Merv,

I tried to re-install the Pop3 connector, but the installation failed. I
tried to remove the folder, but one of the files vmimb.exe won't delete -
apparently the source file is in use. I was able to delete everything else in
that folder though. Had another go at installing the Pop3 connector, but it
failed again.

in the Exchange Server Setup Process.log is the error
CComBOIFacesFactory::QueryInterface (N:\admin\src\udog\BO\bofactory.cxx:54)
Error code 0X80004002 (16386): No interface.
as the last line of the log.

I've checked the following services are running - and they are
IIS, SMTP, NNTP & WWW Publishing Service.
