Client has been using the POP3 conector to retrieve mail
for several months; yesterday it stopped working.

If I click the 'Retrieve now' button on the properties
dialogue, get message 'Initialization Error'. No error
number, nothing in the application event log in event
viewer. I have set diagnostics logging to maximum for
this connector.

Is there a separate event log for Exchange / POP3
connector events?

I have tried removing and replacing the global ISP mail
host record in the POP3 connector dialogue, and also re-
booting the server.

Anyone got any ideas how to troubleshoot this?

TIA
Paul

It looks like the MS Connector for POP3 Mailboxes service
gets stuck in a status of 'stopping'. It can't be stopped
or started when in this state.

I've applied the latest Exchange SP and post SP patches.

Has anyone else seen this?

M$ pop conn is not very stable. I've been running Popbeamer for years
without so much as a reboot.

Hi Paul
Yes I had this. You could try looking in the c:\program
files\Microsoft Backoffice\connectivity\POP3
connector\Incoming folder to see if there any mails stuck
there.
I found that one mail was preventing the service running.
I copied all the mails out to another folder, rebooted,
and then copied them back in a few at a time and
restarted the service to isolate which one was causing
the problem.
Good luck

Another option - ditch POP, host your Internet domain's mail directly on
Exchange, this and many other problems disappear. POP connectors are a
kluge.
