Hi All

I am about to attempt connecting a remote site for the
first time!
I have SBS 2000 at the main office and Server 2003 at the
remote site. I have the Microsoft White Paper on
deploying router to router VPN's but it's confusing!

Which server should I use as the calling server and which
one as the answering server?

When I get the servers connected, I should be able to
plug a laptop in at the remote site and it will log onto
the main server? is that correct?

Are there any other settings I should know about or have
to change?

I will be using a hardware firewall at the remote site
which I know I will have to configure, any suggestions as
to which one to use?

So many questions???? All help very much appreciated as
always.

thanks

Mark

If you are using a hardware vpn at the remote site I would suggest using the
same at the host site. Otherwise you are going to have issues with each. I
would get the same manufacturer and then research how to create VPN between
sites or routers. I am a CCNA so I prefer CISCO equipment. I have also had
good results with Netopia routers. Software VPN can be accomplished with
Windows 2000 but you will need to configure this through the routers since
they will passing PPTP traffic. There is a lot more to this but I would
suggest consulting a Cisco certified or Microsoft Certified Partner if you
have any issues setting this up.

Thanks John

I wasn't going to use Hardware VPN, just a hardware
firewall. I will be trying to connect up the two offices
using RRAS policies but the white paper on this is a tad
confusing! Any other help on setting this up is
appreciated.

I would suggest posting to the "microsoft.public.windows.server.networking"
group as they can be very helpful with VPN issues. I normally have set
these up between ISA Server which creates all the rules and RRAS
connections. Hope this helps.

Thanks John

Thats what I plan on doing, hopefully. Do you have to
have ISA server at both ends or just at the main office
end?
Do you have to have any other services installed on the
remote server i.e DHCP, DNS etc etc

I will post this on the other newgroup too, thanks for
your advice

Yes, you need ISA Server running at both ends for my scenario.

Forgot to mention that www.isaserver.org has some excellent articles
explaining VPN between sites.
