I have SBS 2000 with SP3 applied. I have a computer with two NIC cards, one
internal the other for the internet.

I have SBC DSL which has a dynamic IP address and uses PPOE. Trying to
configure without the use of a router.

First is there a "how to" document for typical configuration? If not I have
a few questions.

1. How do I supply the name and password for the PPOE authentication?
2. With a dynamic IP address, their gateway unknown, their DNS unknown, how
do I set up the NIC?

TIA

Better get a router. It will make life much easier for you.

Your ISP still has a gateway and DNS servers so should be able to give you
the settings.

I'd also suggest you get a router on there anyway and look at
smallbizserver.net for configs

Mark, just to be a nodding head,

get yourself a little inexpensive router that can handle the PPPoE login.
This obviates the need for PPPoE software on the server, which has been
known to cause problems, and additionally gives you a stable controllable IP
space on the external NIC. A caution I'll throw in is not to get a VPN
capable router, you want to terminate VPN's on the SBS, so check the router
handles PPTP/GRE passthrough.

The extra security of an additional NAT layer is a disputable bonus.

Sweetie get a router. That stupid Yahoo SBC loads up so much gunk it's
unbelievable. Take a laptop, use that to sign up and then put the stuff
in a Linksys.

If I use a router as suggested, what about remote FTP, Terminal Server,
HTTP...

Assuming a LinkSys router.

1. Turn on PPOE and supply the name/password.

2. Let the LinkSys obtain the external (SBC) IP address, associated mask,
Gateway and DNS servers.

3. I assume I would turn off DHCP and configure the external nic IP address
in the 192.168.1.xxx range. Use 255.255.255.0 as the mask and use the
192.168.1.1 as the gateway.

4. Update the routing table to send various ports to the 192.168.1.xxx
address assigned above.

---------------------

With all that said, it seems that it would be better to use SBS to just
supply the PPOE login information. If I go this route, what software or SBS
item do I configure to supply the PPOE login information?

Any suggestions, pro/con would be appreciated.
