Well I was a mug....Using my own email address last night in this NG...347
virus emails....today

With the increase of virus email posts and individuals scanning this NG for
email addresses..I ask you microsoft..Why can't you stop it ? These issues I
thought you would have the expertise to prevent, what has changed recently
for the virus posts to appear?

How do you cope with your own employees posting here using their own emails.

Well, Bill - you should know better than to use your actual email addy . . .
;^) Talk about a simple mistake that you could cost you for quite some time
. . . ouch.

As for harvesting emails out of the newsgroups, I don't know how you would
stop that. Even if the technology were available to stop harvesting at the
server level, there's nothing to keep spammers from harvesting addresses
from local cached copies of news posts.

In regard to the virus posts - MS is aware of this and they're working on
it. With the deluge of swen posts, and the recent news servers issues - it's
taking a little bit for the filters to catch up.

And as for MS employees posting - you'll notice that most alter their email
addy by changing it to <user>@online.microsoft.com - and I'd think that MS
is constantly fighting spam & viri on a daily basis. They're kind of a big
target, ya know? ;^)

Do you blame Microsoft for everything? was Re: Come on Microsoft.... by Susan

Susan
Mon Oct 06 14:02:22 CDT 2003

Bill, this isn't caused my Microsoft.... this is SWEN written by crafty
virus writers who go out and harvest email addresses whereever they can.
The writeups on SWEN specifically talk about how they do this in the
public newsgroups.

This is a public newsserver. RFCs require that headers are setup a
certain way. Is that Microsoft's fault or the "openness of the
Internet" that is causing this? We've got people taking advantage of
the fact that the Internet is a wide open place with no rules, no laws,
no protection. Mangle your email address.

And who's fault is it anyway? How about people who are
launching/writing this stuff? How about people not installing up to
date A/V? Don't they have any responsibility?

Spam filters and A/V and running Exchange 2003 is how they tame it...
what else......and the fact that they don't post with their real email
addresses [see the online.microsoft.com?]

347? That' nothing dear. Try over 6,000 virus emails from 9/28 to
today in my Pacbell Popbox. I have to leave my pop on overnight so that
I don't run out of space in that account. How about asking/demanding
our ISPs to have A/V on their mail servers? Pacbell gives me a "bulk
mail filter". Great but my popbox fills up in 24 hours shutting down my
email account. Now what?

This is where I disagree with you. ISP's should be shouldering this one
and stripping off/filtering this stuff.

Susan

Comments noted, Im not an expert on NG but we weren't getting this spam
before in the NG ?

How about the secure NG...never got Spam from there. What is different
between public and secure ?

TOTALLY agree with you about the ISPs, they should take responsibility...

Actually... we always get some spam/virus and most of the time it gets
deleted within a reasonable amount of time. True-> it has increased
dramatically over the past few weeks (but also in normal mail accounts).

I blame those damn virus writers !!!

Like someone said not too long ago in this NG (I can't remember who... but
it was something like this):

THERE SHOULD BE A 10th CIRCLE of HELL for HACKERS and VIRUS WRITERS. Too bad
Dante didn't plan for expansion in the future :-)

There are many in the newsgroup who share your pain. I've been battling
this thing for the past month or more (after going for more than a year with
little problem), and finally installed a better spam filter to help. It
would be good if there were some very public warnings about this for the
"newbies" who don't know any better (as I certain was/am) along with strong
recommendations to "mungle" your email (and how best to do this). I also
wonder, since a legitamate email apparently is not needed, why require one
at all? Seems like that would solve the problem. Alternatively, I'm
starting to use "disposable" email addresses for such things (i.e. hotmail)
which I scrap once it become "corrupted".

Anyway, from my experience a good spam filter is the best option at this
point (short of changing your email address!). -Pat

They can't harvest them out of password protected newsgroups.
SWEN is a brand new virus. We were getting spam ...but not this level
and amount of spam. The amount of pizza that has probably been consumed
over the week by the NNTP department is probably staggering.....they've
been working hard to get this under control....

Ouch, 6000 Susan... yikes... maybe that's one of the reasons I haven't
heard from you.
Also my email shut down from my 3rd party provider for having over 40 megs
of the virii stuff in my
inbox.

So if anyone has been trying to send me anything if you add XP to the user
name you should be able to
get me.

And the difference between a public and private NG is that just like
anything else that requires credentials
you have to have those to get in. That's why you don't see spam in beta
place or direct access (usually -
have seen some slip in) or any other private newsgroups. That's the
explination for the 1 mile view.

As far as ISPs bearing the responsibility I can give a prospective from both
sides of this. Yes it would be nice
to filter more of this and changes in email technology will help with this.
Also with Qos you can monitor more of this
and should and if you find infected users you should let them know and/or
shut them down.

But all of this cost money. The big guys should be able to do this but a lot
of them aren't making enough to make it
worth while and there networks are so huge and most Like AOL, MSN, Earthlink
- to an extent and People PC are
resellers for those that do have the equipment so aren't able to implement
all that is needed.

Then we get into the issue of ok you are filtering but what happens when you
are faced with the invasion of privacy
or are accused of selectively filtering messages. Heaven forbid the message
you filter is a contract or a proposal that
one of you best and biggest customers needed yesterday.

So there are those issues also and concerns and it would be nice to filter a
lot more of that and as technology improves
we will be able to do that.

So of you may think I'm blowing smoke on this issue but I am intimitely
familiar with this isse as I am running and
growing a local high speed ISP. So where do you draw that line. And
monitarily where does it make sense. If your only making $X
a month on a customer and it winds up costing you 1.5 - 2 X that amount to
do more of the filtering and other things that you can
pin on one customer and because of compition can't raise your rates then you
wont stay in business.

I've been posting with my real address since 1999. It's only in the
last year or so that my spam volume has risen dramatically. However, I
get virtually no viruses, since I take the expedient route of blocking
all emails with attachments ending in .scr, .pif, .bat, .com, .exe and
.vbs.

I don't intend to change how I post.

Besides, there are other ways that spammers get your address (for
example, domain registration records!)

Thanks, Steve, for your post ... it was very timely. I've been using my
real email address since 1995 - yep, same email address for 8 years. And I
just this week began to wonder whether I should change what is entered in
posting to newsgroups ... but you settled it for me!
