Ouch, 6000 Susan... yikes... maybe that's one of the reasons I haven't
heard from you.
Also my email shut down from my 3rd party provider for having over 40 megs
of the virii stuff in my
inbox.
So if anyone has been trying to send me anything if you add XP to the user
name you should be able to
get me.
And the difference between a public and private NG is that just like
anything else that requires credentials
you have to have those to get in. That's why you don't see spam in beta
place or direct access (usually -
have seen some slip in) or any other private newsgroups. That's the
explination for the 1 mile view.
As far as ISPs bearing the responsibility I can give a prospective from both
sides of this. Yes it would be nice
to filter more of this and changes in email technology will help with this.
Also with Qos you can monitor more of this
and should and if you find infected users you should let them know and/or
shut them down.
But all of this cost money. The big guys should be able to do this but a lot
of them aren't making enough to make it
worth while and there networks are so huge and most Like AOL, MSN, Earthlink
- to an extent and People PC are
resellers for those that do have the equipment so aren't able to implement
all that is needed.
Then we get into the issue of ok you are filtering but what happens when you
are faced with the invasion of privacy
or are accused of selectively filtering messages. Heaven forbid the message
you filter is a contract or a proposal that
one of you best and biggest customers needed yesterday.
So there are those issues also and concerns and it would be nice to filter a
lot more of that and as technology improves
we will be able to do that.
So of you may think I'm blowing smoke on this issue but I am intimitely
familiar with this isse as I am running and
growing a local high speed ISP. So where do you draw that line. And
monitarily where does it make sense. If your only making $X
a month on a customer and it winds up costing you 1.5 - 2 X that amount to
do more of the filtering and other things that you can
pin on one customer and because of compition can't raise your rates then you
wont stay in business.
