I need to back-up an SBS server from a machine in another domain. Since
trusts are not allowed - any suggestions as to how to go about this?

Try Radmin [www.famatech.com].
Remote Access to NTBackup or anything else you want on the
server...using a TS-style thin client technology.

I've used and recommended it three years, and have four
Client-sites running it (they paid Licensing), and I even
do support & maintenance on those sites desktops from the
comfort of my home.

Could you elaborate on what it is that you are expecting to get done, under
what circumstances?

It's not clear to me if you are asking about backing up files from one
machine to another, or if you intend to support the domain controller role
from a remote site, or if you are trying to recover the SBS if it has
failed, or perhaps something else.

backup AD or data? Offsite backups for data, for AD, that would be the
system state....no way to have an offsite DC in another domain.

I need to backup user files, exchange and system state from a server that is
not a member of the SBS domain. I thought I would use exmerge and NT backup
to produce the SS and Exchange backup files in the file system to grab. How
can I access the filesystem from my backup server? I will be using the
private IP interface - not over the public Internet.

no exmerge! Just use NTbackup and at the end move the data across to the
other machine.
