I've got several pop3 accounts being collected by the pop3 collector on
SBS2000.
Been set up for ages and mail works ok, except if the mail is big it seems.
Been sent some 6mb mails, checked the pop3 box through a web interface to
see if they are there. Waited for the pop3 collector to collect. Checked the
logs which I set to maximum. It said it downloaded the mail and gave it a
Message ID.

However Trend Scanmail (Client Server Messenging Suite SMB) doesn't show it
in its scan logs. And Exchange's Message Tracking Centre doesn't show it no
matter how I search.

Looked in Badmail and nothing new there, looked in the server.log directory
and no mention of the message in the log there.

Tried another scenario where there was a small mail and a big mail in the
pop3 box at the same time. The big mail did as above, the small mail ended up
in my mailbox no problems.

Ideas anyone? Thanks.

Two closely related settings come to mind if it's a size thing. You can go
to Exchange System Manager, expand Global Settings, r-click Message
Delivery -> Properties. On the Default tab, there's a maximum size for
received messages. Also, under Connectors, there's a similar setting in the
properties of the SMTP connector. This one is off by default AFAIK.

With message size restrictions, it's my experience that although you'll get
a warning or NDA for internal messages, those coming from outside through
the POP connector just disappear as you describe. IMO you do want some
limit set for this to avoid someone e-mailing you the whole Internet - it
seems that most users are oblivious to message size. I use 10 MB. Lastly,
I'm not familiar with Trend, so I'm not sure if that could be involved if
the above doesn't solve it.

Thanks for the reply!
I had already checked that setting in the global settings.
Sending message size *was* limited at 2048KB but currently at 10240KB
Receiving message size limited at 10240KB

I increased the Sending up to 10240KB in case the POP3 collector is
'sending' in exchange's eye's. However it didn't help.
The Allowed Sizes on the SMTP connector is switched off.

Have rebooted the server since and still no joy.

Sent some test mails, and going by the size shown in webmail:
2KB success
288KB success
575KB success
862KB success
1149KB success
1435KB success
1768KB success
1949KB success
2176KB failed
2296KB failed
3443KB failed
5737KB failed

So definatly looks like a 2mb issue..... Hmmmmz :/

Also checked this KB:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303741
SBS SP1 is installed, vmimbcom.dll is version 5.0.1299.0 so thats ok.

Any other ideas?

Seems it was the "limit Message size" on the Default SMTP Virtual Server. It
was on and set to 2048KB. MS say that 2048 is the default, but don't say if
it is on by default - anyone know?
I'm not sure I actually understand it's role, it didn't limit us sending
mail external >2mb.

Thanks.

I don't know what that defaults to, but my global limits are 10 Mb and I've
never had a problem sending or receiving messages up to that, so if it is
the default I must have changed it at some point. My server was upgraded
from SBS 2K and it's 4+ years old, so it's difficult to say what was a 2k
default, what's a 2k3 default, or what I changed myself over the years.

Anyway, glad you sorted it out.
