Hi,

I've been having problems with my SBS2000 setup since downloading
Microsoft's upgrades relating to MsBlast.

Every so often, my client PCs lose their connection to the server. In
Explorer I get a red X across the drive so, for example, when I click on my
K drive I get the message "K:\ drive is not accessible. The networkpath was
not found". Clicking on the drive letters several times does not get back
the connection so I don't think it's the time-out issue I've read about.

It's not always every PC on the network that loses the connection but, more
often than not, it is.

The only way that I seem to be able to get around it is by rebooting all the
machines, starting with the server.

I haven't noticed that I am doing, or using, anything unusual in the sense
that the only thing that has changed over the last few weeks is as a result
of the Microsoft upgrade (coincidence?).

I'm running SBS2000 with a maximum of four client PCs. The server has one
NIC and has the ADSL modem attached. Three of the PCs run Windows 2000 and
the fourth runs Windows 98. The latter was not on this morning when the
latest two events happened.

Any ideas?

Andy

Check if ms03-026 is installed on the server and the W2K-clients. Start by
opening Taskmanager and look for the msblast.exe or mspatch.exe proces. If
the dllhost-proces is consuming a lot of memory, you might have been hit
with the welchia-virus. If you see those processes, kill them, go to
www.sophos.com to get the removaltool and install ms03-026 after that.

No :-(

Ms03-026 installed.

Nothing like msblast.exe or mspatch.exe visible in TaskManager.

It just seems strange that this happened after I installed the Microsoft
upgrades.

Andy

Does everything on an ipconfig/all from the clients show that all is
pointing to your server-IP?
Got WINS installed on the server (for the W9x)?

Thank you for asking! No, is the regretable answer.

That d***** virus got me again last night. I had updated my machines - I
spent hours doing it and then I got those little red x's showing no network
connections. So again I went through the detection and removal routine. I
thought those updates blocked the security holes?

Whatever, I'm going to have a fun-packed weekend catching up with the work I
should have been doing for the past couple of days.

Once again, than you.

Yeah, but there only has to be one machine in your network that is not
patched and is connected to the internet.

Take the internetconnection down, patch all machines, look for funny
processes in Taskmanager and if you find one, go to www.sophos.com to get
removaltools. They've got excellent tools for removing Blast, Welchia, Sobig
etcetera.
Boot all machines after checking that ms03-026 did install properly
(reinstall if you hesitate) and then you should be fine.
