In WindowsSBS2000 exchange, utilizing Veritas Backup Exec, with the backup
option of 'FULL - Database & Logs (flush committed logs), the log files are
not being deleted from the mdbdata folder. How can I make sure these log
files get flushed after all backups?

Do the Microsoft Exchange Information Store checked under your selections
tab? Did you deselect the exchsrvr directory in your Selections tab? Check
your Veritas Backup Job Log, what error does it give when it tries to backup
your Exchange Databases and Flush the committed logs? What version of
Backup Exec are you running?

I'm using Backup Exec 8.6, Rev. 3808 w/agent for Microsoft Exchang. MS
Information Store not an option, only Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes checked.
'Exchsrvr' folder not checked in selection. Not getting any errors in the
'backup' logs. Running out of space!
Open to ideas. Thanks Lar

Has this ever worked? I would suggest using NTBACKUP immediately to purge
your Transaction Logs then you can troubleshoot the Veritas issue.

Well, it has always 'worked' in that I have been able to 'restore' emails for
users in the past. It's not that I'm in need of accomplishing a restore at
this time, I simply need to clear space on the drive. Note - on another
Exchange2003 box utilizing BackUp Exec, I have the 'Exchsrvr' folder checked.
This box always does a good backup, no errors and clears all log files.
Should the 'Exchsrvr' folder be checked on this SBS2000 Exchange box as well?
Thanks again.

No, you want to deselect the exchsrvr folder on 2000. 2003 includes a
component called Shadow Copy Service which allows for online snapshot of
open files such as Databases. 2000 does not have this feature.

He's not talking about the file folder. BE has two selections sepereate from
the file based backup. One item does the complete store and flushes the
logs, the other does the individual mailboxes (brick level backup). The
brick level backup does not flush the logs (IME).

Re: Clearing exchange logs by BruceIT

I believe what he is saying is that Backup Exec allows you both a full backup
of the database and something called a Brick Level backup. If you need to
restore only a single user mailbox the way is to restore from the Brick level
backup. The full backup does not allow restoring only one mailbox. He is
saying if you are doing only a Brick level backup the logs are not removed as
part of the normal backup process. Only a full backup will process and
remove the logs.

Is it possible your issue is due to only running Brick level backups? If
you recently changed to all Brick level backups for example, then you might
just have started to see this problem.

I use Brightstor Arcserve Backup and find that Brick level backups are much
slower as well.

Hope this helps,
Bruce
