Hi I am having trouble installing SP1a. A dialog pops up and disappears
before I can read it. I already have the underlying win2k patched with SP4
but hope to fix problems with remote access clients accessing shared folders
etc (according to the FAQ). The service pack also has a few extra to-do
wizards that don't seem to be updated with any other service pack.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Darren

Hi Darren,

Are there any errors in the Event log or the Setuplog.txt (in c:\winnt\)?
If you check the About hyperlink on the SBS console Server Status
(BackOffice Home) page does it still just list "2000" as the version? It
could think it is already installed? Try checking the registry for the
version keys and see what it give you.

Hi Kim

I was begining to lose hope of a reply. There are no event log errors in
the event log. There is also no Setuplog.txt, only Setupact.log,
setupapi.log and setuperr.log.

The server status still says "2000" as the version. I have never installed
SP1, only the component service packs - Windows 2000, Echange 2000, ISA etc.

I have tried unpacking the msi file but the individual updates don't seem to
work this way. I have also run the install procedure again from the
installation disk and it failed with an error - something about unable to
upgrade to US English version. Everything seems to work fine except for a
few bizarre prolems (windows explorer cannot show folder view). I think
some registry cleaner was run some time ago, which may be the cause of the
problem.

The key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\BackOffice has an entry SuiteVersion 2000.
There are no service pack entries.

Unfortunately, I haven't been much help. Any other suggestions?

Regards and thanks.

Darren

Hi Darren,

Is the error you get something like this?:
"This version cannot upgrade the installed version of Microsoft Small
Business Server."?

287919 Error Message: This Version Cannot Upgrade the Installed Version of
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=287919

The NFR copy should upgrade to SP1 (as that is what I'm using here) but I
want to see if the error message matches... If not could you give me the
exact error when you try to upgrade from the SP1a cd?

Here are some more articles with similar error messages - does anything
match the error you see?
327673 Cannot Upgrade Evaluation Version of Small Business Server SP1 by

327962 Cannot Upgrade SBS 2000 Evaluation Version to SBS 2000 SP1 Full
Version
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=327962

Could you possibly have the US English version of the Update and be running
a UK version of SBS?

Thanks!

Kim

Your trying very hard for me, thank you.

Unfortunately, it's none of those. I actually don't see the error when
trying to run the SP1a upgrade because the dialogue box disappears before I
can read it.

The error I receive when trying to reinstall from the disc is:

"Cannot upgrade to Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 with language
English (United States). This computer is running Microsoft Small Business
Server with language Language Neutral."

Pretty bizarre. I have found the knowledgebase article 286392, which
applies to this error. I'm not sure this will fix the SP1a problem though
but I'll give it a whizz when I stop procrastinating because I just know its
going to be a disaster.

FYI, we have the full version of SBS2000, which was a clean install so it
has never been upgraded from an earlier version. I don't think I've ever
used or found a UK specific service pack or patch. The US ones seem to
cover us.

Regards

Darren

Another thing I tried was to go through the "add/remove programs" to see if
there was a repair option for the SBS2000 installation. When I clicked on
the SBS2000 entry I received the following message:

"An error occurred while trying to remove Microsoft Small Business Server
2000. It may have already been uninstalled".

I've seen some threads that mention a maintenance re-installation. Maybe
this will allow me to avoid a complete reinstall, which I see as potentially
disasterous. How do I do a maintenance re-installation?

BTW, what's an MSFT?

Thanks

Darren

Hi Darren,

I would try the steps in the article 286392 and see if you can then do a
maintenance install over the top of SBS and once that is complete try setup
of the service pack. If the SP fails again try clearing out all the temp
files and folders under c:\Temp and the administrator profile \temp folder.

Let me know how that works!

Hi again Kim

I will try it but it might not be for a little while. Please keep checking
this thread - I might need my hand holding again.

I have decided to use the time between Christmas and new year to completely
overhaul the server and reinstall everything from scratch (new disks as
well). I'll be the only one in the office for about three days, which
should give me ample time to carry everything out. Thanks for your help and
suggestions. I want to do this because there are so many things a little
bit messed up. I set up the network and run it but I'm an actually an
engineer that just so happens to know more about computers than anyone else
in the office, hence the responsibility by default. I have not been very
good at resisting my urges to tweak things every now and then.

Have a nice break over Christmas

Regards

Darren
