Hello,

We're running Small Business Server 2000. We have set up a subdomain for
the Italian office of our company. Let's say we're company.org, and the
subdomain is called it.company.org. I asked our ISP create MX records
identifying the mail server and IP address for it.company.org. Everything
works fine, EXCEPT we cannot send them an email from within our office. It
returns the following: (I substitued "company.company.org")

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Jim Kirk on 4/21/2005 7:41 PM

Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please retry or
contact your administrator.
<Company.company.org #4.4.7>

Is there something I need to do in our server's DNS, and if so, what and
where?

Many thanks in advance!!!

Matthew

Is your internal AD name the same one as your internet domain? or you are
using .local (or something like that)?

Our server's domain is sa-intl.org and our server's name is SAI.

So here's the exact message we get back:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Paolo Romizi on 4/21/2005 7:40 PM
Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please retry or

<SAI.sa-intl.org #4.4.7>

Thank you!!

I'm not sure. I think our internal name is SAI - that's definitely our
server's name. And our domain name is sa-intl.org.

Thank you!!

It looks like your AD domain is named the same way as your public domain
name. This means that any changes that you do in your public DNS will not be
"seen" by your internal LAN. This is one of the main reasons you should use
.local (or some other non-TLD) when naming AD.

Since your server has no way of knowing where to send mail to your The first
thing I would try is creating an MX entry on your own DNS that points to the
Italian office... and see if that fixes the issue. Do you know how to do
this?

I will let Marina chastise you about the IPCONFIG :-)

Ahh, it looks like I have some studying to do before I set up another
server.

I do not know how to create an MX record on my DNS. I would be grateful if
you could point me in the right direction, and I would be grateful for
Marina's chastising. It's been a long time since I've looked at her site,
what am I doing wrong?

Thanks!!!!

Is it worth changing to mycompany.local now? by Applebaum

Applebaum
Wed May 04 14:29:50 CDT 2005

Hi all,

In reviewing the material on www.smallbizserver.net, I came upon the
following advice included in the recommended setup for two NICs, static IP &
router:

c. DHCP setup. Click on Start...Administrative Tools...DHCP.

015 DNS Domain Name yourcompany.local

We don't have that line in there. Can I add it now? What will the
implications be? I already have a www record in the DNS Forward Lookup
zones so that we can see our own website, but anytime the webhosts change
its IP address I have to update. If I add this line in DHCP, will it
resolve our problem in emailing it.sa-intl.org? What else would change?

Otherwise, I'm not sure how to add an MX record to our DNS. If I try to add
a new Mail Exchanger, it won't let me type a period (.) . Do I have to add
a new zone under Forward Lookup Zones?

Again, many thanks for your help!

Matthew

Hi,

DNS on your external nic should point to the server IP only. Furthermore
NetBIOS over TCP/IP should be disabled on the external nic.

Check the bindingorder and make sure the internal nic is on top. Rerun ICW.

Hi Matthew,

You won't be able to change the AD domain name without a complete reinstall.
Your AD domain is called sa-intl.org so that is what should be in 015.
