SP2 update changed something in regards to the pc receiving a console
message.

After upgrading some XP Pro PCs to SP2, these pcs cannot receive console
messages anymore from a Small Business Server 2000. The firewall is OFF on
the XP SP2 PCs. The only changes to these PCs have been the SP2 upgrade and
subsequent patches from Windows Update. The Alerter and Messenger services
are Automatic and are On on the SP2 PCs. The message from the server is
"Not all recipients received the message. This could be due to an invalid
computer name, or because the recipient computer is unavailable. Check each
recipient computer name and then re-send."

What am I missing?

SP1 PCS are still receiving console messages.

Thanks in advance to this question, it is probably a very basic answer that
we are not seeing.

Maybe some help here...

The NET SEND command may not work correctly on a computer that is running
Windows XP Service Pack 2

Merv,

Thank you...the article you sent me describes exactly what is happening. But
then how do I broadcast messages to the users on the server? Messenger
Service is on Automatic on the SP2 PC. Is sending a Console Message a thing
of the past? E-mail works but it is not efficient when you have to send a
quick message out. In addition, MS recommends not having the Messenger
Service on when connected to the Internet? Is the Messenger service a
liability?

Cheers,

Smith

IMHO MS have stuffed up on this one. Yes, the messenger service has validity
on your LAN, what they should have done is update the service to accept
local traffic but not 'foreign'.

However I also believe they capitulated to a lot of requests in acting in
this manner, pity the requesters misunderstood the problem and got what they
asked for, then it affected the rest of us.

I agree that MS turning off this by default was a bad idea. But, I don't
think they shouldn't change its funtionality a bit (i.e. to accept local
traffic only)... any computer that gets an unauthorized messenger message is
because they have a very poorly configured network. At least it was a
sure-tell sign.
