My company is finaly getting fast internet service. We
won't be able to get a static IP address. what is the best
way to use this service. Through a router that has a
firewall connected to my network hubs? or through the SB
server (2000) and using their security setup?
thanks in advance
stephen.

Get 2 Nics and use the SBS server as the firewall. On top of that, you could
still put a hardware firewall between the Cable modem and the SBS.

About the static IP... you will need a DDNS service to be able to use SMTP
mail and that sort of stuff.

Javier,
I can use DDNS for remote access....using it for SMTP is just plain
stupidity vs a pro hosting company.

I disagree.

I have MANY clients using SMTP with DDNS, and aside from one port blocking
problem Bell sprung on us last week (easily solved), there's NEVER been an
issue. The companies have MUCH more control over their e-mail, and don't
have the issues so many have with POP3.

To each his own.

Show me a pop connector.... and I'll show you a long junk email with some
malformity that will nail that pop account and shut it down.

I've seen a junk mail stuff up my pop box too many times.....

I respectfully disagree with Mark and Susan (in part) ;-)

IMHO-> SMTP vs POP...

-For just a couple of users using POP is a great alternative, but if you
have more than a couple of users POP is a pain in the a**.
-I agree with Gavin... DDNS is a very reliable/viable solution.
-SMTP is the way to go in most of the cases

But...

When I have used POP... unlike Susan, I have never had a gitch (that's not
related to the ISP hosting the account). I have to give that I never use the
catchall accounts (imho that's evil)

IMHO... both are viable solutions that have their respective places in the
SBS world.

My $0.02,

Javier

Gavin,

How'd you solve the port blocking problem? Cox did it to me a few weeks ago.
I solved it by using Cox's smtp server as the smart host but I'm not
thrilled with the solution -- don't like relying on anyone else's server!
Did you do something different?

Thanks,

John

I think Gavin solved the "other way around" problem. The ISP was blocking
port 25 to the SBS server, so tzo.com was instructed to re-direct mail to
that port (I have attached Gavin's the response at the end, the original
thread was titled Bell Canada blocks port 25 on 6/27/2003).

IMHO... I would use Cox's SMTP servers as a smarthost. Then you don't have
to be worring about every anti-spammer measure every time somebody comes up
with one (aka I cannot send E-mail to AOL (or whatever) accounts, This ISP
requires reverse DNS lookups... etc).

My $0.02,

Javier

1) I arranged Store and Forward through TZO, and asked them to reroute mail
on port 2525
2) I had Exchange look for SMTP mail on port 2525 instead of 25
3) I opened up port 2525 on ISA and our external firewall (Packet filters)
4) Closed port 25 on above

That's it!

Keep in mind that if you rerun ICW and reconfigure the packet filter
settings, you'll have to manually re-enable any custom packet filters you've
created.

Let me know if you need anything more.

Turns out that's exactly what I'm going to do. Cox's business internet has
always been really expensive for slower speeds than their residential
service (e.g. $250 for 384k duplex when 1.5mbps download and 256k upload is
$40). My server is located in my home office so the residential worked well
when coupled with no-ip.com. However, no-ip.com does not have a service for
outgoing mail (apparently tzo.com does) so I was stuck setting up the smart
host when Cox started blocking port 25 a few weeks ago. You can't change the
port in the smtp connector unless there's some external service that will
accept the e-mail on whatever port you specify and then send it out on port
25.

Cox now has a home office power user option that is $70, is the same speed
as the residential service and is a fixed ip with no port blocking. It's new
this month and I'm going to sign up today. :)

Just another opinion here...

I am using DDNS for remote access and SMTP at about 6 or 8 customer sites
and it works great.

As far as the connection, I typically use a hardware firewall and set up the
server at the same level as the workstations. Only open up the ports that
you _need_ to.
