Hi learned Friends,

Doing a little research in the best overall Anti-virus product for SBS,

Was hoping to get your views on products you use and why you think they are
better etc.

Prefer real world examples to speculation if possible

Regards

Danny

So far I have been happy with Symantec Enterprise which includes Exchange.
My biggest complaint would be pricing. They favor the big guys to much in
their pricing scheme.

Hi Danny -

Best overall is definitely going to be a matter of opinion. There are
several high-quality products with good track records that have a strong
following. Having said that, I personally prefer Trend Micro's
Client/Server/Messaging Suite for SMB. We put this on every new server we
install. We do have a few (inherited) clients using Symantec (either
Corporate A/V, Corporate A/V + Exchange, or their SBS bundle). Maybe it's
just me, but I've seen some funky behavior with Symantec Corporate. We have
one client that prefers to have full system scans of the clients run every
night in addition to the real-time scanning. This client has rogue scans
firing off on the clients almost randomly. We've been though everything,
and can't figure out why this is happening.

A few reasons I like Trend C/S/M for SMB:
1) Ability to pull updates hourly
2) Includes Anti-spam & Anti-spyware
3) Client install detects most consumer-grade A/V packages (Norton,
McAfee, etc) and automatically uninstalls as part of it's own installation
routine
4) You can purchase exact number of licenses. (Have 17 clients? No need
to buy a 25 client license - buy just the 17 you need)
5) Price - it's one of the less expensive solutions available.
6) Experience. I've never had a single issue with Trend. Never had a
virus get through, etc. It's almost 'Set it & forget it' . . .

I also like TrendMicro. I got a killer deal. I previously had TrendMicro
for Small Business Server. When they dropped that product, they offered an
upgrade to the full Client/Server/Messaging Suite with 50 licenses for $400
bucks. I got the upgraded just in time for my SBS 4.5 to SBS 2000 upgrade.
I previously had NAI/McAfee Total Virus Defense. It sucked... Chad already
mentioned some good points. I'll repeat and mention some more.

1. Inexpensive
2. Their software generally works. (Unlike McAfee)
3. The desktop client doesn't slow down your computer noticeably
4. Virus definitions are update hourly
5. Trend does a decent job of keeping up with the latest viruses
6. My one experience with support was very positive.

One mistake I made when installing it was I installed the normal console for
clients instead of the HTTP version. Because of this, it doesn't
automatically update the clients. It automatically deploys but I have to
initiate it. I've been meaning to upgrade to the HTTP version but I've been
lazy.

Documentation is a little weak. But overall, I can't complain. Never used
Symantec NAV. Anyway, take it easy.

Rob

Since no-one else has mentioned Sophos - thought I'd better. Easy to
install, setup, autoupdate etc - expensive (but regarded, apparently, as
one of the premium solutions for SBS).
