Running SBS 2000 with Arcserve for SBS.

I want to get hold of a backup exclusion list. Although
the obvious is not M drive, where do I get hold of such a
list please - or could someone link me to the Microsoft
site??

This is a matter of personal choice. What I do on a new installation is to
exclude only the page file. Then I start checking the job logs. If files
fail to back up because they are in use, I make sure they are not files I
think I may need, then I filter them. For example, I'm excluding the dhcp
logs and some files that an application creates in the temp directory. That
way, you're backing up everything except some files that won't back up
anyway, while including everything else.

Another place you can look for suggestions - open NT Backup and see the
files that are excluded from a new backup by default. There's a list in the
properties or settings.

Thanks for that - but not what I expected.

I seem to remember reading an article somewhere where
there was an exclusion list for Exchange and other
features of SBS and the directories/files involved.

With Arcserve, I've never seen anything other than to exclude the M drive.
I also exclude a couple of directories to do with the POP connector -
Arcserve sees messages when it catalogs the drive, but by the time the
backup gets to those directories, they're empty, generating an error. I've
been running Arcserve backups for a couple years without excluding anything
except M.

There is a list of Exchange processes that are supposed to be excluded from
real-time virus scanning. If you use E-Trust AV, maybe you're thinking of
that list?

The only place I can find this is in the CA article below. The article
applies to version 6. I'm on 7, so I'm assuming that I just carried the
same exclusion list forward when I upgraded. I also exclude the directories
\exchsrvr, \winnt\system32\inetsrv, and M:\. That list must have come from
somewhere at CA too - I wouldn't have excluded them except in response to
some kind of instructions. I also exclude the process cidaemon.exe, which
is recommended in the readme or release notes. The article is at
http://support.ca.com/Download/patches/ilitnt/QO22673.html
