SBS2K.

Hello,

I have been reading the document "Backup and Recovery for Small Business
Server" which I think is a great insight into the whole backup scenario (let
me know if there is a better one). Anyway, it describes a few different
backup schedules. After reading this, I am thinking that I might user
scenario 2. It uses 11 tapes (8 tapes for two weeks of Monday thru Thursday
incremental backups, and 3 tapes for consecutive Friday full backups). It
allows three weeks of protection using 11 tapes.

If I user this scenario, would I have to set up a different backup job each
day (because the user of a different tape)? Also, how can you schedule the
backup when you have the Monday thru Thursday tapes being used every two
weeks and the Friday tapes every three weeks? Can you just have two jobs set
up, one for the weekdays and one for Fridays and just switch the tapes
accordingly?

On a given day the only things that change here are users documents and a
few changes to the SQL database and sometimes changes to the system state.
The main thing that may differ vastly from the day before is the Exchange
store. I need to store tapes off premises (we are getting a safety deposit
box). Given this, it my plan overkill?

Basically, I am asking if anyone can share a few scenarios that they use.
and maybe some general pointers as to how to implement them. I'm sure I'm
not making much sense, but I'd appreciate any help on this. Thanks,

Chris

I don't recall what that article says (or where it is, for that matter)...
but I personally don't like incremental backups (multiple points of
failure).

I usually use a different tape each day for a full backup (2 weeks) and 4
tapes for full backups over the weekend for offsite storage (4weeks). Also,
I keep a ghost copy of the drives (once a month or so) on an off-site
location (very important if you need to do a bare-metal restore). Having an
online imaging software would be great... but it is somewhat expensive for
my clients. Check this out:

Javier,

Thanks for the quick response. A few questions though:

1. If you use 14 tapes, does that mean that you have to set 14 different
backup jobs on the server?
2. What exactly is online imaging software? Do you mean Ghost? I do know
what that is.

Again, thanks for the help.

No problem.

No... since all of them are full backups I just schedule them based on the
following instructions:
http://www.smallbizserver.net/SBS2000/How_do_I_backup_my_server.aspx
The way it is setup works that no matter what tape is there the backup will
be performed.

Just like Ghost... but it is "online" in the sense that the images are being
done while the server is running and on "real time".

Tapes are cheap - if you consider the cost of downtime. I only do FULL
backups of my systems/data on a daily basis. 1 set per day.

Thanks again for the reply. I now see that you are performing an unmanaged
backup. I have always tried to perform managed backups with a stand-alone
system. Ill look into this tomorrow and post back on how it goes.

screw incremental/differential!! Full backups daily, weekly, monthly, and
yearly....a 23 tape rotation. Backups are never overkill, loss of data is
costly!

Chris, most SBS'ers follow the same thing that Mark recommended - do full
backups every day, and forget about differential and incremental backups.
Why?

1. Because in most SBS environments you'll be lucky to convince your
customer to remember to put in a tape every day
2. If or when you need to access a file from a backup tape, you just get the
last backup tape and go for it.
3. If you try to introduce differential or incremental backups, you now have
multiple backup tapes that you must track, handle, and manage.

Mark,

Thanks for the thought. Actually, I never planned on doing Incremental or
Differential. I like normal backups every night. I guess I was mostly asking
about the tape rotations. I like the 23 idea you mentioned. Thanks again.

Mark,

I was thinking about the 23 tape rotation. Are you meaning nine daily tapes
(Mon-Thurs) to cover 2 weeks, two weekly tapes (run on Fridays), 12 monthly
tapes (run Saturdays), and an annual tape (probably run on a Sunday)? This
is what I came up with. Thanks,

Chris,
The 23 tape rotation is based upon Sat being your weekly backups and M-F
being daily but if no one is there Sat then I would do a M-Th and pull Fri
as your weekly and the 30th or 31st as your monthly if you cannot do another
backup. Some companies have to do a regular backup say on the 30th and then
a monthly immediately thereafter. Most SBS, this isn't an issue. My acct
clients just pull Fri as their weekly and the end of month as their monthly.
During tax season, they are there on Sat! Backups are tough as they work
late and start early! But daily, weekly, monthly, annual is really the best
bet.
FYI, I've seen many doctor's office getting ripped off by employee theft
and since many just do daily, we couldn't restore backups and recreate the
paper trail. One DC got taken for about $100,000 b/c his "computer guy" had
daily backups overrighting each other...and they were TR5!!! As I have said
before DLT on ebay!!!! 15/30, 20/40 are under $100!!!!!! These drives have
MTBF of a like a million hours.

Mark,

Okay, I'm going to buy a DLT drive. Need a little help though. I am looking
at the following three drives:

Compaq DLT 4000 20/40
Compaq DLT 3306 20/40 (340775-01)
HP SureStore DLT 4000 20/40 (C1579A)

I found all three for reasonable prices. The question I have is what type of
tapes do I buy to be compatible? When I look online I find two attributes on
the different tapes: cartridge type and recording standard. I guess what I
need is a little buying advice on the media. I would like to know what's
what before I get the drive. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Chris
