I need a recommendation on a backup solution for SBS2K. I need to backup the
Information Store and the users files on the server daily, to an external
hard drive. The built in NT backup is very limited and cannot do what I
need.

What I need is basically for the backup software to do a full backup every
night, where each night, each full backup is given a new file name. Once the
external hard drive is full, it should start overwriting the oldest backup
first.

Is something like this possible? I know that Arcserve from CA or Veritas
software is excellent, but it may be an overkill for my customers budget.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Do you really want to clog up your customers hard drive
with backup files until it's full??

Suggest you speak to your client and get them to check the
real cost of total system loss/data recovery.

Most companies who have used a system for some time come
to depend on it more than they realise. Get them to write
a DRP and see how quickly they want the data back! Just
backing up to the hard drive aint gonna help in the event
of a disk failure!
Failing that,if you HAVE to backup to file, you can write
(and schedule) batch files that will backup to files on
the disk, create 5 and name them monday thru friday - as
part of the batch file, delete a file that already exists
with that name - this way, when you run monday.bat, the
first thing it does is delete last mondays backup file and
so on....
Not the best solution but should work.

Chris.

Chris, how do you intend to backup the information store with a batch file?

The first question I would ask is why it is necessary to keep backups until
the hard disc is full, and then start overwriting them. This seems a
pointless reason to spend lots of money on backup software when everything
but this could be acheived using the humble NT backup utility which isn't so
bad really.

Thanks, but I tried convincing the custemer for an alternative solution, but
that's all he wants, to backup to an external HD he bought just for that.
If I choose the batch file setup, where can I get help on writing this batch
file?

Look to www.smallbizserver.net for the backup article for a starting
point.

I was going to use NTBACKUP from the command line with
the /IS switch (and others)
