I have a member server that we use for backups to a DLT
external tape drive using Backup exec 8.6. I can get the
backup to work for the data files that I select on the
SBS server (remote) but I can't get it to backup up the
exchange on the remote server I keep getting an RPC error
and it stops the BE Job Engine in services. I have the
Exchange agent license but it tells me to install the
system manager component on the media server. Will this
conflict with the Exchange system manager on the SBS
server and how can I install just the system Manger
without causing any issues..

thanks in advance for your help.

You can install System Manager on your server, I have it installed on my
workstation, hardly ever use TS cause all the admin tools are installed on
my workstation.
Install it from the CD that has Exchange on it and choose just System
Manager.

If you're using BE for SBS then you can't do it. Veritas claims that SBS is
a one server solution and you can't even add agents to get other servers to
work with that version of the software. Don't know if it applies but I
wanted to put it out there.

Joe is correct. You can back up remote workstations from BackupExec SBS
Edition, but not remote servers. I had a rude awakening to this a couple of
years ago because when you finish installed BE for SBS, it asks "Do you want
to install Remote Backup Agent on any remote servers?" We ASSumed that it
worked and proposed a solution to a client and ended up eating the
difference in price to purchase the full versions. In fact, Veritas still
does not make this clear on their web site in the sales literature, so I
called them and they said that version 9.0 is the same deal. IMO, if
Microsoft lets you have member servers in an SBS domain, Veritas should
support backing them up with their SBS software. By the way, if you are
still using 8.6, upgrade to 9.0--you won't regret it.

Bob never said he was using the BE for SBS, just BE 8.6.
You made assumptions that might not be correct.

Send a note to Veritas marketing. I was extremely frustrated with this
same experience last year. The Veritas booth guy in New Orleans
partners meeting said the only way you can get what we need is to bend
the ear of marketting many times. I need to send them a note myself.
