I have a client running SBS 2000 and we are trying to setup a Treo 650 as a
POP3 mail client. I am receiving mail no problem but cannot send mail to
anyone outside their domain. If I configure Outlook Express using the users
credentials, I can send mail to anyone whose account is hosted on the SBS
server. If I try to send to anyone outside that organization, I get the
following message:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by
the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'jcarlson@test.com'. Subject
'test', Account: 'mail.mydomain.com', Server: 'mail.mydomain.com', Protocol:
SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for jcarlson@test.com',
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You need to use a valid outgoing SMTP server name, along with a
corresponding username and password. First place to look would be your ISP
that supplies your Internet access - they should have given you this
information.

In my case, my ISP is Verizon, and for POP3 and IMAP email accounts, their
outgoing SMTP server name happens to be: outgoing.verizon.net .

Now saying all that, I've only connected my Treo 650's to SBS2003 servers. I
don't have any SBS2000 servers left to connect to. Also, I used Versamail on
the Treo 650.

Thank you for the suggestions but I think that you misunderstood.

The SBS 2000 system is my SMTP server. My ISP does not provide me any mail
services.

Also, this issue seems to be a SBS 2000 POP3 issue since I cannot send mail
through the SBS box with Outlook Express either.

The POP3 and IMAP services are by default are disabled on an SBS server. You
need to go into Services and enable whichever one you want to use. That will
allow a remote client (Treo or Outlook Express) to retrieve their emails. I
prefer IMAP over POP3, because IMAP will still leave a copy of the email on
the SBS server.

I have enabled them. It just doesn't work.

I may have misspoke last time. It is not a POP3 issue, but a SMTP issue
since I can receive mail no problem. I just cannot send to anyone outside my
organization.

if it's a sending out issue, then you need to configure your smtp connector
correctly. there's several other postings in this newsgroup just form
yesterday and today on that topic, if you search around.

Your main decision is whenther to send email directly from your server out
to recipients, or if you want//need to send all outgoing email to your ISP's
mail server and let it deliver the mail (called "smart host").

Since you are using POP3 to retrive incoming email, I'd suspect you will use
smarthost for your outgoing mail.
