(b)SMTP and exchange 2000
Hi all,
I'm trying to configure exchange 2k (part of SBS 2k) for receiving mail via
bSMTP. I forwarded port 25 on my vigor router to the server. The problem is
that although grc.com says that port 25 is open, I still can't connect to
my mailserver with telnet:

SUS installation - initial mirror question
Hi
SBS2000 SP4, SUS SP1
I am running SUS on my server. I'd like to roll it out to my end users &
many of them including myself, use a 56k modem for Internet access. This
makes the initial SUS mirror take about 3 days. (In my rural location, a 56k
modem runs at 28k!)
Is there a way that I can upload the initial CAB files by CD? I can see the
\sus\content\cabs directory but there are also other directories which may
include details which should also be copied.

SMTP Delivery to AOL
Hi All
We have SBS2k with SMTP setup to deliver directly to the recipients email
address this works fine.
The problem we have is AOL will not take mail from directly our server so I
setup another SMTP for delivery of AOL email to relay to our ISP mail
server.
This worked for one day & with no other changes to the setup AOL mail is now
trying to go out by our SMTP not the new relay?
Is their a way to force the AOL mail to be routed to the new relay SMTP to
our ISP mail server?

XP Workstations running S-L-O-W
OK, I'm at my wits end and tried just about everything
suggested in the Knowledge base. 5 Windows XP
workstations take between 8 and 15 seconds to open Word
and Excel documents, which all other machines open near-
instantaneously. The docs were created in Office 97 and
all machines are now running Office XP, and the NT/2000
machines are fine, just the 5 new XP CAD stations. I've
disabled Oplocks, I've installed SP's and hot fixes,
disabled kernal mode filter driver for Backup Exec and
McAfee, lots of re-boots and no difference.
Performance profiling shows that the workstation is 99%
idle, no network traffic, just waiting for the server to
respond.
Server: Intel Vero Beach, Dual Xeon HT, 1024 GB, 1Gbit
backbone, raid.
Workstations: Tyan Thunder, Dual Athlon 2400, 2048MB, 3Com
10/100, Quadro FX, uSCSI. All latest drivers and
patches. The users of these stations are all local
administrators, and I've even tried upping them to domain
admins.

Antivirus Exclusions
I have just installed Panda Antivirus on my server and
want to be sure I have excluded all files and directories

article 328841: Exchange and Antivirus Software. This
takes care of the Exchange components. What about
Windows 2000 and ISA?
I also came across article 822158: Virus Scanning

Crash
A client has just had some lightning damage on his
network.
His server is also misbehaving now (not sure yet if
hardware is too blame, yet). The server hangs at
the "network connections" splash screen. Removing the NIC
does not help. It wont start in safe mode. I have just
done a repair from the installation CD to no avail.
Are there any other methods of diagnosing before we pull
all the hardware to pieces? There is no visible lightning
damage on the server.

Backup problem (repost)
Trying to backup to a tape drive (Seagate STT3401A/Travan
Tape) via microsoft backup. Get this message:
Required Media Missing
There is no unused media available with the selected type.
Add unused media or click Cancel to select another type.
(Note: It may take 60 seconds for removable storage to
recognise new media)
This is a first backup routine.
In the MS Backup wizard I have two options in the Backup
Destination field: "Travan" and "miniQIC" and have tried
both. Under Backup Media or File Name Field only
have "New Media".
Checked Device Manager and it says Tape Drive is working.
Looked at Help and have checked Removable Storage as far
as I can understand it! EG: A "Media Pool" snap-in has
been created called Backup with miniQIC and Travan as sub
snap-ins. Can see nothing untoward in their properties,
but.... may be missing something.
Under the "Physical Locations" snap-in a Seagate STT3401A
snap in has been created with sub snap-ins called "Media"
and "Drives". The tape injects and ejects from the
Seagate snap-in menu. However there is nothing in the
details pane when "Media" snap-in is selected. There is a
Drive 0 in the details pane when the "Drives" snap-in is
selected, however this says "Empty" in the state column.

SBS 2000 Rebuild on New Hardware
Hi,
Can anyone point me to a document on how to completely re-
install SBS onto new hardware. Specifically do I just do
a full restore over the top or is there a way of doing a
clean install, then restoring AD, File and their security
and Exchange thereafter. I am not confident the previous
install is very healthy so a clean with a restore over
the top of the main data is preferred.

Space used by ISA Report files
Hi all,
My system drive is running low on disk space. I have been removing files
where I can, and came across the program files\microsoft isa
server\<guid>\report job folder. This folder contains many files of the
format REP20011229-REP20020104.IRP. Obviously some of these files are fairly
old, and each of them are around the 200-300 kb mark. In my ISA Array,
Monitoring Config the three logs are set to go to a different location to
that mmentioned above.
Anybody know if these files are safe to delete, or of a location where I can
set up cyclical report generation so that I have no more than a certain
number of report?
Thanks

1. I am using Trend on my SBS server. What do I need to do to protect the TS

2. If I have another application I want to make available to just *some* of

OWA, VPN and SP1a
Morning people (your timezone may vary)
I have 3 loosely connected questions so please forgive me if I bolt them
together:
a) I connect with my SBS2K system from home via VPN (ADSL at both ends and
NAT at home). It works fine for long periods and then I get a disconnect.
Often I can reconnect without problems but sporadically, the server refuses
the connection. I can still connect via remote desktop but I can't see any
error messages in the Event Viewer. No amount of messing around makes any
difference apart from a) rebooting the server or b) waiting 24 hours or so.
The problem is more likely to happen if I am connecting my laptop via a
wireless connection into my home p2p network. Any thoughts on what's
happening here and what I can do about it?
b) I have OWA operating from SBS. I'm just using the regular ICW version.
This works fine from the fixed PC (running XP Home) from home but I have
loads of trouble getting through from anywhere else. This seems to be a
security issue as the main problem is constant UIC/ password dialog boxes
which do not go away when I enter valid credentials. I cannot get in when
connecting:
i) from a W2K workstation behind a client's ISA firewall;
ii) from a workstation in a temporary internet cafe at a conference
(connecting, I think to JANET over ISDN I guess);
iii) from my laptop using my GPRS-enable mobile phone as a modem (Orange).
Is there anything I can do about this? I have looked in the KB and
implemented the standard advise from MS.
c) Does anyone know how I can get my hands on the CD version of SP1a for
SBS2000? This is available to US customers but not UK ones. The service pack
files themselves I have downloaded but there are several utilities
(including upgraded Outlook clients) which are not in the web distribution.
Thanks for listening.

Spam, Exchange 200, SBS2003
Hi all,
We have a problem.
We have hundreds of email messages filling up the program
files\exchsrvr\mailroot\vsi 1\badmail directory. We disconnected the SBS box
from both the internet and the LAN at the same time, and it still happens.
Shutting down the Exchange services stops it from happening. This implies
that we have some kind of worm or script on the server itself. We have
followed several KB articles regarding relaying and anonymous access to the
virtual SMTP server, without success.
Has anyone seen this before, or have some suggestions as to how to find and
eliminate it ?

SBS vs Server
What exactly is the difference between Small Business
Server and just regular server (2k or 2k3)? My boss got a
free copy of SBS and is convinced that we now don't need
to upgrade our exchange 2000 to a 2003 server with
exchange 2003. We can just go to SBS 2003 with Exchange
2003 technologies... I'm thinking there has got to be a
document out there that explains why one would have to go
the Server route over SBS. Tag: Addresses being harvested from this list Tag: 144094

Exchange Q's
Hi all,

The attempt to log on to M/Soft Exchange has failed" It keeps asking for
Username & password. I enter them correctly (already accepted to be logged
onto SBS in the first place), but it keeps getting disregarded. Any ideas?
Some of the workstations have a Personal Folder within Outlook - Is this
necessary? I think the folders were created when i tried to import old
messages form the users old O/E mail account. How do I erase this Personal
Folder or even start the Outlook account from scratch?
Help appreciated,

Terminal Services and licensing
Hello All, first time using this tool but I am really in a bind... We recently purchased a OEM version of Small Biz Server 2000 to put on a very inexpensive server that we purchased. We got it set up and installed around the end of August and now it is poping a message "Your terminal services temporary client licenses will expire in 15 days". Do we only get temporary licenses and we must purchase Terminal Services CAL's or did we not set up everything correcly? I suppose that our IT Manager would know the answer to this question but he is on a leave of absence in Asia. If anyone can assit me I would be much appreciated....

Internet Access over VPN connection
Hi all,
I am trying to setup vpn access to a clients SBS2K so they can access it
from home. I have VPN connection all working, they can use Outlook and
browse the file system without problems albeit a little slow. I havent been
able to get web browsing working as yet. The ISA server is returning an
error that the URL is being denied which is not happening when they are on
the LAN. Is there somewhere in ISA where I should be allowing internet
access to VPN clients? The only work around I have is to get them to use
the internet while not connected to the VPN, however I would prefer them to
have access as if they were in the office.

What's wrong with my batch file for ntbackup? /um switch
I am trying to run a backup job using a .cmd file per Microsoft's
suggestion for an unmanaged daily backup but it doesn't work. (Q239892
and Q267574 - method 3)
Here's the dailybackup.cmd file:
start /wait rsm.exe refresh /lf"SEAGATE DAT 04106-XXX SCSI
Sequential Device" C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup
"@C:\Documents and Settings\saxguy\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\daily.bks" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no
/hc:on /m normal /j "daily" /l:f /p "4mm DDS" /um
I don't have the /n switch because MS says it's best to let RSM use
the default date/time label.
But when I double click on the .cmd file it just flashes and goes
away.
What's the reason?
I have been trying for months to get ntbackup to run a daily backup
job of selected files using one of two DDS3 tapes. Set to overwrite, I
expect the job to not care which tape is in (I selected "New" for
which type of media to use when i defined the job) but it doesn't work
reliably.
Seems to be RSM and the way it handles labels I guess? I discovered
the /um switch which is supposed to obviate any requirement for user
interaction on a stand alone tape drive (Seagate DAT) but I have yet
to see it work reliably.
I can do manuals just fine but that takes the fun out of automation
plus it irks me that this shouldn't be rocket science to schedule a
backup.
I keep one tape in the drive and one in a safe location and swap them
out fairly often. I don't want to be bothered by a request to "put in
XXX tape please" to continue a backup. Just overwrite what is on the
tape in the drive and be done with it.
Any help is really appreciated

Defragmenting SBS2000 disks?
Been looking at maintenance on my nearly three year old sbs2k install and
looking at defragmentation.... do I need it or not. C: drive holds the
usual stuff and page file, D has page file client apps, User disks and
exchange, E had url cache and Company stuff including sqldb's. Over the 30
months or so there's been a lot of file activity and access to our regular
stuff like templates etc does seem to be slowing.
We've been using diskeeper defrag on clients (NTFS win2kpro). Seems to work
well but to be honest I've no actual proof or measurement to say it
provides any real benefits.
Downloaded and installed the Diskeeper server enterprise version on trial
on my sbs2k and ran an analysis which says the C: D: and E: (all basically)
drives are heavily fragged and to defrag it.
Can I ask people opinions on this?
I haven't used the MS installed defragger, which in understand is a cut
down diskeeper, but I assume since it's there there's no issues running the
thing? What about Exchange - I presume its not a good thing to defrag it,
especially if its running? Same for SQL?
Ideas or experience appreciated.

All disks appear as 'dynamic' after reboot?w
Help!
Seems as though my disks, C: mirrored, D: & E: hardware raid , all
previously simple volumes have been converted to dynamic disks after the
last reboot? Huh? Has anyone seen this as a result of service? All I know

Acronis True image server to do a physical disk image in addition to my

upset. Took an image before service (SP4) a few weeks ago ok. and rebooted
after service ok. Didn't ntice any problems. Had to reboot to try and cure
a dns prob Monday, coincidentally Monday evening was a sheduled monthly
image which failed...
Any ideas?

disks or leave it alone and look at my backup routine again..

SBS2003 errors.....urgent
I've installed SBS 2003 to replace an aging NT4.0 domain. The installation went smoothly but long and the system tested OK and ran as a new domain on the same network segment without any clients for a week. When I joined the workstations to the system and made it the production DC......I now get the following error in the application event viewer ONCE A MINUTE and the system has slowed the whole network to a crawl. I'm even getting workstations where the keyboards are flashing and reversing the num and cap lock functions.....this is weird.
I cannot locate any reference to the error anywhere...it seems to reference the CD drive (f:).
Here is the error: it is immeadiately preceded with an informative entry regarding LDAP, every time.
The service threw an unexpected exception which was caught at

Router on LAN query
Hi all,
Hopefully not too strange a query here.
We have a nice working SBS2000 set-up here, Internet connection via 2nd NIC
and Broadband Router. We also have a PBX which also acts as a Router and
also provides some nice CTI functionality. Query is this:
We [or more specifically certain users on the LAN] need to be able to route
out via the PBX's integral router to certain customer sites. To access the
full CTI functionality of the PBX we need the PBX sitting on our INTERNAL
LAN range. By default obviously, any packets not destined for the internal
LAN get routed outwards by the Server - hence no routing to clients via the
PBX...
What I've done thus far is this:
1] Moved the PBX to our internal LAN [was previously sitting between the
external NIC and the Broadband Router - worked fine in that set-up but less
CTI functionality] and assigned it a fixed IP address on our LAN which is
reserved in the DHCP set-up on the SBS box. In the Router config on the PBX
I've entered a default route pointing at the Server's internal NIC address
so that any packets not for any of the PBX defined routes/addresses get
passed to the SBS box.
2] This has enabled the full CTI side - so far, so good
3] Re-ran the ICW and Internet access is working fine from both Server and
LAN clients
4] I've also amended the DHCP scope to have the PBX/Router as another Router
and moved this to be first in the list of router addresses provided via DHCP
5] From a standalone laptop without the ISA client, I can route to clients
via the PBX no problem - so it *appears* that the DHCP/routing side is
working fine
6] However, from my PC with the ISA client I cannot route via the PBX
I *think* that the ISA client *appears* to be the likely thing I need to
configure somehow but I'm unsure how to do so - can anyone provide any
pointers?
What I want [ideally] is to have all packets from any LAN clients going to
the PBX/Router initially and if they're destined for one of the remote
clients on that side, get routed by the PBX. If not, the packets should be
forwarded to the SBS box and dealt with as normal.
Or is what we're trying to achieve impossible?
Thanks in advance,

Drive Mappings
We moved drive mapping from server test (for example) to
server test2. Now the mappings still go to the server
test and are X'ed out because they cannot map. We used
the same letters. The script on the server points to the
correct mapping, but the workstations still try to map to
the old mapping. If we delete both the workstation
profile and the server, it fixes the problem, but then we
have to redo mail, winfax, etc... We can add a new
mapping with a different drive letter and point to the new
server test2 and it works fine. I was going to try to use
the net use /d command to get rid of them and then start
over. Any other ideas. Thanks.

ISA Issues
We have certain users who have the ISA Firewall icon in
the system tray which when hovered over shows the
following.
"Configured to use ISA Server (OurCompaniesServerName)"
They do no have the green circle with the arrow in their
Firewall Icon either.
Other users when we hover over the icon on the system tray
appear normal.
E.G.
"Connected to ISA Server (OurCompaniesServerName)" but
they have the green circle with the arrow in their
Firewall Icon.
When i have gone to ISA management on the server it also
shows something strange in that some users appear to have
ISA Firewall sessions and others who can browse the web
etc don't appear to have sessions against their names.
What's going here anyone any ideas? Tag: Addresses being harvested from this list Tag: 144009
SBS 4,0a and W2K Servers in same Domain?
I am currently using SBS v4.0a as Exchange mail server
and am now looking to introduce a W2K server into the
same domain and make the W2k Server the primary Domain
Controller. I understand that by installing W2K in mixed
mode this is okay. Can any one confirm this and are their
any techinical docs that explain the procedure.
Many Thanks in advance.

SBS 2K3 setup problem
I've just installed SBS 2K3 for the first time and it installed so much
better than SBS 2K. Very sweet since I always had problems with that part.
But now I'm running into problems in the part that used to be easy for me
and which might all relate back to the intranet site.
When I open IE to http://companyweb/ from the admin profile I get a "not
authorized to view this page" message.
From Server Management if I go to Internal WebSite and click on:
Change Name
Manage Access
Change Homepage Layout
or anything else I get a "Server Error in '/' Application. The resource
cannot be found" message.
The local domain was setup as oursite.lan and I chose to name our intranet
lib.oursite.org setting it up as a subdomain or our site. Our hosting
company also pointed the subdomain to our website hosting servers so I get
our website loading when I type the lib.oursite.org address into a browser.
THE problem or just a problem?
I also cannot get the computers running W2K to connect to the server by
typing the http://servername/computerconnect into the address bar and keep
getting "page cannot be displayed" and "server cannot find server"
messages. Part of the same problem or something else?
I would really appreciate hearing that I didn't do something very stupid by
not acceptting "mycompanyweb" as the default during the setup and will now
have to reload everything.
Thanks again for the help.

New Broadband Connection and Security
Good Day. We just installed a new broadband connection.
I went to a website to run a port scanner. Found that
most of the ports are open that were tested. I have run
the ICW, used a broadband connection, then made sure the
filters were on when I continued with the ICW. What can I
do to close the ports that are opened. Such as 80, 1080,
137, 138 etc.
THank you

Domain Machine
We just upgraded to SBS. Some of our client PC are getting the following message. Can you tell us how to fix it. Typically we change the machine to access the workgroup - reboot - change back to a domain. The problem is we lose our desktop and email settings under Outlook
Thank
The computer DELLBARBARA tried to connect to the server \\XXX-SERVER using the trust relationship established by the XXX domain. However, the computer lost the correct security identifier (SID) when the domain was reconfigured. Reestablish the trust relationship

Exchange or ISP?
A couple of weeks ago, I got a bunch of email bounced back, all with a
message like this:
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.
Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.
lis0132@aol.com
The message is sent from postmaster@funddrive.com which is our domain and
website where our email is. We aren't using exchange inhouse for our email.
I am going back and forth with the ISP about this being our problem or their
problem. It seems to only be affecting a few email accounts through, not all
of them.
If I look in the Admin Console and expand down through exchange to the
default virtural smtp server, I have a bunch of queues listed which say:
SmallBusiness SMTP connector - print-worx.com (SMTP Connector - Remote
delivery)
the domain name in the above changes.
What is going on. Has something happened to my exchange? Any ideas or
suggestios?

Service Ticket Request Failed
I am getting a lot of these failure audits in my SBS
event log. I have researched all over the internet and
can not find any good information why these computers are
causing a failure audit to occur.
Have SBS2000 with all the latest service packs and
critical updates. Clients are WinXP Pro and are fully
patched. All my machines are virus free and have the
latest critical updates. Some are even brand new and
some have been rebuilt. The events only occur on a few
computers.
I can't find anything on Microsoft's site or EventID.net
that fixes this problem. The only thing I can think of
is the failure audits occur when a machine is left on a
night and the user has logged off.
Here is one of the logs:

port 444 & 80 - Inforad
Hi. I have an evaluation version of Inforad's Wireless
Enterprise. I cannot make it work because I cannot figure
out how to open ports 444 and 80. I am running an SBS2000
network with it's ISA server (2 NICs). My DSL router is
not blocking any ports. I am lost. I thought that I had
them opened and tried a Telnet session to my outer NIC
address but got login prompts and I need no authentication
required. Any ideas? Thank you.

ISA Firewall issue HELP!!!!
We are running SBS2000 with around 30 Windows 2000 Pro
clients.
I have recently tried setting up a couple of new clients
on the network, and found that after I install the
Firewall Client the "Enter Network Password" dialog box
always appears when I launch IE.
I have enough CALs on the SBS, I have tried refreshing the
Firewall (ashtray) with the SBS's IP address - but I
cannot bypass this.
When I enter the SBS's Administrator username and
password, only then can I browse the web.
The user in AD is a Member Of "BackOffice Internet Users".
Please help!!!!

Last night I posted to this list using a virgin e-mail address. Overnight,
12 fresh e-mails arrived, all containing the SWEN worm.

Not if you stick to the reserved top-level domains:
