    - Shared Fax displaying squares instead of characters I have a client that is using SBS with Shared Fax. Everything is working great except when they try to send faxes in Chinese. Instead of displaying the characters it displays squares. The chinese language set is installed on both the server and the workstation. When you look in the console Chinese characters display correctly in the recipient name, subject and document name fields but not in the actual fax which you can see by double clicking on it and bringing up imaging preview.     - New Service since WIN2K SP4 Installation I have a service running on my SBS2K called Wireless Configuration. It seems to have appeared the day after I applied WIN2k SP4 to my SBS2K server. Could some tell me, was this installed as part of the service pack? This is my only server that has SP4. The others still have SP3 and this service does not show up.     - Email from a web page problem Hi All, SBS 2k fully patched. I can send and receive e-mails from and to anywhere, but when an email is generated from a web page, it refuses to be delivered to the recipient. In other words: I fill in a form on the web page and then submit it, this will generate an email and in theory, the email should go to a specific recipient, buit it does not.     - Complete Reformat / Reinstall of SBS2000 I am using SBS2000 to run our company network...there are about 19 computers connected to it and I've been having to deal with a lot of issues that I know a reformat/reinstall would fix...     - XP Pro clients cannot connect to SBS2000 server I have replace an old Netware SBS server with a Microsoft SBS2000 server and have attached the Win98 clients, but cannot get the 4 XP PC's to attach to the new server. I get messages like the following: DNS does not exist (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR); the query was for the SRV record in .... (I checked the query lisitng, and it seemed to be correct). I have tried DHCP, static IP,etc. How is the domain name supposed to be input? (domain name) or (domain name.local)? I checked my WINS data and for my server it lists 1 record (01h - Other) at the current servers correct "internal" NIC's IP, another record (03h - Messenger)is set to the servers "external" NIC's IP (192.x.x.x), and one record (20h - File Server) at a different address (10.x.x.100) THIS may be the culprip, I'm thinking (I changed the server IP after initial setup from the 100 to the 101 address.     - RIS FAILED RECENTLY ON TWO DIFFERENT SITES: NTLDR is corrupt. The system cannot boot. RIS has been working ok, now there's suddenly problems. Installation begins normally but right after login part, when the actual installation is supposed to start, an error displays: NTLDR is corrupt. The system cannot boot. This is happening on two different sites. The other is SBS2000, other plain Win srv2003. Both clients are WinXP SP1a Finnish. No changes have been made to RIS, only windows update.     - More than one server with SBS? We are an engineering design firm that uses a very large number of vendor catalogs and selection software. I've grown past weary of trying to keep all my client machines current with piles of typically poorly written software. I'd like to consolidate all this.....well, lets call it 'stuff' to be polite...onto one machine. I'm supposing a Windows 2000 Server Machine running Terminal Services is exactly what I want to do. My questions begin here: 1. Can a Windows 2000 Server running terminal services coexist in a SBS2000 Domain? 2. My W2K clients all have a TS license built in. Do I need to buy additional CAL's for the periodic connection to the W2K Server on top of the SBS? On average I should have no more than 5 people connected to the terminal server at one time. 3. Can this server talk to the SBS? IE, can I save documents to a project directory on the SBS and print to printers on the SBS? I'm not looking for people to have to waste their time trying to set it up for me, I just want to know if its possible before I start investing money into the project. Thanks everyone.     - Migration to new SBS 2000 Help!! Hi, We have been running SBS2000 for around 2 years now where we have recently decided to upgrade our current Dell PE2500 due to redundancy reasons. The new Dell PE2600 has a RAID-5 array (PERC4), x3 36GB SCSI HDD, x2 NICs for LAN and WAN. We ordered the box from Dell with no OS, as there was no point considering that we had all the CDs and licencing for the old SBS2000 anyway. At the moment, the old SBS is being used as a Domain Controller, Email server (Exchange 2000), Web proxy (ISA 2000) via a 24/7 ADSL line, and runs the Symantec Corp Edition that protects and updates the server as well as all of the clients. The new SBS will take over the roll, as it will be much more powerful with RAID-5 redundancy (in case of a HDD crash). We already have a deployed fileserver on the network where I have configured the SBS logon script to map client drives to the fileserver. This is currently working quite well. We just had the new SBS Dell 2600 machine delivered, and I need some pointers as to how to set it up. I have been reading the Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 Migration Upgrade White Paper quite carefully, but I need some questions answered as well as comments on my method of approach. 1. Upon powering up the new Dell, it asked for the OpenManage CD as there was no OS installed out the factory. I loaded the CD, and it gives me a wizard. I am on step 2 or 3 where it asks me for the OS partition size. Can I specify 20GB instead of the normal 8 or 12GB on a typical RAID-5 array? The reason being, is that we are running anti-virus software that creates a quarantine folder on the C drive, and this is currently causing us problems on the current SBS. What limit is there on partition size for SBS 2000 sitting on Windows 2000 Server? 2. Page 4 suggests that I need to create new accounts on the new SBS 2000 machine: security groups, user accounts, mailboxes, computer accounts. Is there a way of getting these from the old SBS (export wizard?) or do I have to write-down each item and re-create it on the new SBS? What about SSID? Is it the case of simply recreating these objects in AD or are there any other things that need to be done? 3. It mentioned the configuration of ICW. We have two users setup who are allowed remote access (VPN). Does this need to be done in ICW or just in the user's account in AD? 4. The old SBS has a static IP address of 192.168.16.2 which I will re-use for the new one as well. All the clients are dynamic and assigned IP addresses via DHCP. Do I need to do anything to DHCP to recreate this, or do I just hardcode the 192.168.16.2 for the LAN adaptor of the new SBS and that is all? 5. For Exchange 2000, I need to create the mailboxes on the new SBS 2000 and Exmerge data out of the old SBS onto the new SBS. Can I create the new mailboxes using the add new user wizard in backoffice, as this adds the user to AD and has the wizard for creating new mailboxes 6. I intend to change the emails for the company, where currently it is <firstname>@domain.com. If I make the emails <firstname>.<lastname>@domain.com, then will this be quite easy? This is because we recently employed another John, which clashed with an existing John@domain.com. We pick up our email via POP3 at the ISP, so I will also have to leave the <firstname>@domain.com for a few weeks so that all external recipients are fully aware of the new email policy. 7. P12 suggests that I need to configure the ISA Server Local Address Table.what does this mean? Where can I find this out on the old SBS? Please help!!!     - SBS 2k & Terminal Services Hi, I have an issue with using IE from within a Terminal Services session on an SBS2k machine in that when I come across a web page that I would like to mail to a friend, when the send mail form appears and I open up the "To" button to display the list of recipients, I only get the Global Address List rather than those in my personal address book. I'd rather not have to add all my contacts to the Global Address book if possible. Does anyone know why this is or can help me fix the issue?     - Help with event ID 15108 I have been using ISA server on my SBS2000 for about 2 years and all of the sudden loads of warnings are now on my Event Viewer. This is the description I get: ISA Server detected a spoof attack from Internet Protocol (IP) address 127.0.0.1. A spoof attack occurs when an IP address that is not reachable via the interface on which the packet was received. If logging for dropped packets is set, you can view details in the packet filter log. I'm pretty sure this error has nothing to do with attacks from the outside because I've blocked all incoming traffic from the Internet at the Cisco level and the warnings are still there.     - Exchange Mailbox Permissions / Backup and Logs Hi, I've been volunteered to sort out the network in our office and I've just looked at our exchange server and I have noticed that the administrator account has full access to all the mailboxes, should this be the case? I thought the only account that could log on interactivly that can access the mailbox is the associated user? I have also noticed that the backup process does not seem to be removing the logs, I was under the impression that if a successful backup was done then the logs would be deleted, is this not the case?     - Exchange services not starting I have installed a new windows 2000 terminal server running small business server with exchange 2000 (SP3). Whenever I reboot the server, 2 exchange services fail to start, the Exchange MTA stack and Exchange information store, as they are depending on the Exchange system attendant service to start. The Exchange system attendant service does start and I am able to start the 2 failed services manually. Would anyone be able to give some advice on getting these two services to start automatically. these are the two entries in the event viewer relating to the exchange services failing.     - 2 pop3 clients and SBS exchange I have an issue where my client wants to keep his two pop3 mail accounts, user1@mydomain.com and user2@mydomain.com. He wants to see both accounts and he wants the people in the office to see and respond to the mail sent to user2@mydomain.com. I originally set up pop3 connectors to retrieve the mail for user2@mydomain.com and send it to a distribution list, acct1, acct2, acct3 through exchange. They are recieving it fine, but the users are experiencing delays in sending or replying to the mail. The reasons were explained in prior posts about aol and spam, but I need to get this done once and done right. Internal e-mail is not needed right now, but I can't set up internet mail accts on the individual workstations because the other users won't see what is downloaded after the first person logs in! Do I set up an smtp connector to use the the isp's smtp server to send? They do not handle the pop3 mail I recieve, but I can use them as a smarthost. Also, will the mail look like it came from "User2@mydomain.com" or the ".local"? Is the distribution list the problem? I was thinking to set up one mailbox for acct1.mysbs.local and one mailbox for acct2.mysbs.local which all other users will have their outlook mapped to.     - Internet Access Configuration Issues Hi everyone, I'm having problems setting up the Internet access in SBS. After spending a while in this Forum. I've got some good grounding to sort the problem out but some people have made me think (not a good thing!!!) I originally intended to set up our LAN to the Router & ADSL Modem (through Cat5 connections to a switch). This would entail using one NIC on the Server (as per clients) However since finding out how at http://www.smallbizserver.net/sbs2000/network.aspx - it also says that MVP's don't advise this configuration. Can any of you "Old Wise Heads" explain to me why, & should I change it to the 2 NIC, Static IP address, ISA & Router config.     - Problems delivering to recipients of external dist. list Hi There, Running SBS 2k using the POP3 connector to recieve mail from a smart host. If people are members of an external distribution list (eg Yahoo Groups) they do not recieve mail sent to that list. However, the server does download the messages, it just does not do anything else with them. Does not end up in bad mail. I have "bodged" this by adding an entry for each mailing list to the POP3 connector, which allows me to point the mails to 1 mailbox.     - Software/Upgrade assurance Hi, I'm currently running SBS2000 and I have Software Assurance with it. The MS website seems to imply that I should automatically receive the upgrade to SBS2003. Is this the case, or do I need to contact Microsoft in some way. I'm in the UK. This is the first time I have ever had to get an upgrade through Software Assurance, so I'm not sure what I need to do.     - Small Business 2003 client configuration Hello, I have installed the evaluation version (RC) and would appreciate any help in configuring a Win95/98 client. Procedure calls for opening Internet Explorer and going to http://sbserver/connectcomputer. A message then indicates that this client configuration procedure will only work with Win2000 and up. The message also provides details on finding the instructions, however it yields nothing in the SBS2003 help and nothing at MS.com. The computers ping without a problem.     - Security Auditing Another Sysadmin admin has been playing around with our auditing I am now getting the following unwanted audit entries in the Event Viewer of successful logons to Exchange: Event ID: 565 Source: Security Category: Object Access Object Open: Object Server: Microsoft Exchange Object Type: Microsoft Exchange Logon Object Name: /o={domain name}/ou=first administrative group/cn=Recipients/cn=amf etc. He cant remember how he set up this audit and I cant find out where to turn it off.     - Home setup Desperate Yesterday, Our Company installed Win2k SBS for the first time. We decided to go for SBS after reading up on Small business solutions via internet etc. We installed DNS and DHCP networking with our server installation as well as SQL and Exchange components. Our Server has two NIC's one to a BroadBand Modem the other to the LAN. (We have no Router) We have 1 switch. The Broadband connection works fine on the SBS install and we can access the Internet no problem. We don't have a website or anything so we access our mail via Outlook2002 (POP3 accounts) which we created for users. What i need to know is this. We would like to setup a VPN how do we go about this. We would also like to setup OWA. How do we go about installing this? Is it possible only using pop3 accounts?     - New Install-Cleaning Event Log Warnings I am setting up a server with SBS2000, and the event viewer shows warnings for "PerfLib", Event ID:2003 - for each of the following: MSFTPSVC, W3SVC, InetInfo, ASP. It also shows a warning for "PerfLib", Event ID:1016 - for EXOLEDB. Now I have read that you remove and reinstall the services to make these go away (regarding ID:2003 events) but I am unsure how exactly to remove and reinstall these fundamental services.     - 50 License Limit SBS2000 is limited to 50 CALS, correct? Does this mean that only 50 machines can be connected to the SBS Domain? Or does it mean that only 50 Workstations can be connected, and Servers are not included? Also, if we upgrade to SBS2000 from an NT4.0 Domain, presumably no account information will be lost - it will become an Active Directory Domain? What effect will this have on other NT4.0 Servers (or workstations) in the domain - can they work with the Active Directory Domain? What if they were BDC's?     - Gateways/Rounters Have SBS2000 running nicely with DHCP, DNS, ISA, etc, using one of the default ranges of IP addresses that it suggests when installing SBS. Now have an Intelligent Gateway to put on to setup Broadband - it has a fixed Public IP address, and 5 other fixed IP addresses I can use, also has built in DHCP and Firewall. What is the best way to approach this, use the dhcp on server or gateway?? If I use the DHCP on server do I then do a DNS forwarder to the Gateway - so all the PC's get out to the internet? Should I connect the Gateway via a second network card? It says you can do it either way, or via USB. It is a BT 2Wire Intelligent Gateway and has a built in 4 port hub, have connected to server via network cable. This is all very confusing or maybe I'm just having a bad day.     - Using Gateways/Routers Have SBS2000 running nicely with DHCP, DNS, ISA, etc, using one of the default ranges of IP addresses that it suggests when installing SBS. Now have an Intelligent Gateway to put on to setup Broadband - it has a fixed Public IP address, and 5 other fixed IP addresses I can use, also has built in DHCP and Firewall. What is the best way to approach this, use the dhcp on server or gateway?? If I use the DHCP on server do I then do a DNS forwarder to the Gateway - so all the PC's get out to the internet? Should I connect the Gateway via a second network card? It says you can do it either way, or via USB. It is a BT 2Wire Intelligent Gateway and has a built in 4 port hub, have connected to server via network cable. This is all very confusing or maybe I'm just having a bad day.     - Port 80 in sbs2000 By default, sbs2000 clients can run any local application (in their own machine) that talk to other remote servers on the Internet. This is because ISA server creates, open, close dynamic ports on behalf of clients even though the ISA firewall is enabled. For example, I can run an application, that requires port 3000 to be opend, on sbs2000 client machine. But if run the same application on the sbs2000 server machine it doesnt work (for obvious reason - packet filtering). Now here is my question. I have one application, that uses http port 80, that doesnt work on the sbs2000 client machine either and throws the following error: 403 Forbidden - The ISA Server denies the specified Uniform Resource Locator (URL).     - Problems with Exchange / Event viewer Hi, I have the next problem: I have a W2K-SBS. My Clients (XP-Pro/W@K-pro with Office 2000) can't access the Exchange server. The message i have is: Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Unable to display the selected folder or item. The Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available. Either there are network problems or the Microsoft Exchange server is down for maintenance. Ok I go to the server, go to the Exchange System Manager, Servers, my server, First Storage group, where I see that the mailbox store and the Public Folders store are unmounted. When i try to mount them, i see an error: An internal Processing error has occurred. Try to restarting the Exchange System Manager or the Microsoft Exchange Information Store servive, or both. ID no: c1041724 Exchange system manager Then i go to services and i see that the Microsoft Exchange event is stopped, and the Microsoft Exchange MTA stacks is stopped. I restart the Exchange system manager and Information store, this is ok Then i start en Exchange Event, ok, then i start the Exchange MTA stacks Then i have the next message and the Exchange Event service stops The message is: Could not start the Microsoft Exchange MTA stacks on local computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal Windows error or an internal Service error. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator. When i take a look at the event viewer, is see an empty eventlog. When i look closer, is see that there are empty lines, so there are lines but are unreadable.     - ISA / Proxy / Firewall Hi, Here's the deal. We have SBS2000 running on a Dell Server and 5 clients running a mixture of windows 98SE and Windows XP. Initially the Server connected to the internet via 56k modem and shared this connection out via ISA server or Proxy Server (Sorry I am not to clued up on what all these things do). Basically the clients had the firewall client running and connected to the ISA server that windows 2000 created (THASERVER). This all worked fine with no problems - The only thing I recall is that the email would not be picked up until I installed the Microsoft Firewall Client on the client. Now we have just had Satellite Broadband installed on the server. This is one way sattelite and thus the outgoing information still flows through the modem and the incoming comes back down via sattelite. In order for this to work the settings need to be changed for the dial up connection in the lan settings from THASERVER to the Sattelite ISP providers proxy server address (localhost). This however wont work without stopping the Microsoft ISA service and all related services including Cache Manager Web Proxy and Microsoft Firewall. Once these are stopped everything on the server works fine. So then I have a working but unsecure service running on the server. This firstly is not ideal and with all these services stopped a lot of other things dont work properly. I was informed in order to share the connection out accross the network I simply share my internet connection via ICS and then point the LAN settings in IE on each client to the IP of the network card on the server. When I enabled ICS on the network connection it said it needed to change the IP of the card which it did and that has also caused other issues!!! Basically I want to find a way to configure ISA / Proxy / Cache / Firewall to work in conjunction with my new settings and be able to share the connection out securely.     - Making more space on SBS 2000 server Hi Up untill recently we have had enough free space at our C-drive (5-700 MB free), but a week ago we suddenly experienced a large increase of free diskspace. Currently we are as low as 120 MB free. Does anyone have a guide about how to get more free diskspace? I know that there is some log-files, dmp-files etc. that is OK to delete, but which? When we used SBS 4.5 I remember I downloaded some kind of document about which files it was OK to delete, but I cant´find it and I guess there are other issues to take into concern regarding the SBS 2000?     - Slow Access to File Properties on the Desktop While connected to Network ONLY - XP SP1 and SBS 2000 This problem is weird. Only one workstation is affected, it just happens to belong to the Desktop Publishing person of this small organisation. 1. I updated SBS to Win2000 SP4. 2. Hotfixes 329170 and 811492 applied to the Win XP workstation. 3. There are no DNS problems and 14 other workstations are OK. 4. I have also put in place domain policy as per http://www.smallbizserver.net/sbs2000/I_get_an_error_when_I_try_to_save_a_file_in_Office.aspx 5. The Network Interface Card has been replaced 6.     - Server mouse behavious issues I am using MS SBS 2000 with ISA and Exchange installed and working. I have 1MB of RAM and more than enough disk space. Everything is working, there are no events or errors other than information. When ever I use the Server the mouse is erratic, stops and starts and is hard to control (mouse is working properly). The only item I am suspicious of and may change is relocating the Exchange Transaction Logs and Databases to a spare hard disk as this may be causing the disruption. Any ideas, I have also stopped non essential services, memory is not an issue and the Server is secured by both a Hardware based Firewall and ISA on the Server.     - upgrade internet connection We currently have an isdn terminal adapter connected to a serial port as the internet connection. We now have DSL and have the second nic connected to the DSL with internet connection. Do we just have to run the internet connection wizard from the sbs admin console to reconfigure the sbs2k from the isdn/serial port to the dsl/second nic?     - Renaming drive partitions? Can drive partitions be renamed (relatively painlessly)? The server has a 15GB "D:" partition for exchange and a 95GB "E:" partition for data and I would like to switch these for obvious reasons (unless theres' some non-obvious reason not to.). But I'm not sure this can be done without screwing up lots of drive references used by various software? If so, how? I've also discovered that the exchange store is on the C: drive (which is why C running out of space) and I need to move it as well. Thanks for the help. TCP/IP - client for MS networks, 2nd tab should be domain name. log into
there. 98 doesn't "really" join a domain b/c it is not manageable.

Got WINS installed on the server? Got options 044 and 046 (0x8) set in
DHCP-server, Scope options?
