Hi

We need to make a win2000+exchange2000 server part of an sbs2000 domain.
Both servers have their own users/mailboxes defined but we need all
users/mailboxes to be managed by sbs2000 domain. I have two questions;

1. We would like to retain the active directory and other settings on the
sbs2000 and only bring users from the win2000 server. What is the correct
way to make the win2000 server part of the sbs2000 domain without effecting
sbs2000 active directory settings in any adverse way?

2. What would be the correct way to transfer users across? Should we just
recreate them on sbs2000. There are not very many.

Thanks

Regards

if you don't have a lot of users, easiest way to bring over emails would be
to export to a .pst file each user's emails from the non-SBS server that
they want to keep; then create new user accts on the SBS system, and import
their emails back in.

As far as saving workstation settings, many people have had good luck with
the File and Settinggs wizard that comes with XP.

Thanks. Any chance that adding the win2k server to sbs2000 will effect
sbs2000 active directory in an adverse way as the win2k server has its own
active directory? Basically I want to know what happens to the active
directory settings on both servers, do they get merged or do sbs2000
settings take over?

Thanks again.

I would move users over manually, and then flatten and reformat the w2k
server and make a member server, reloading the W2K Server OS. You could turn
it into a Term Server. That's what many of us do with our older server(s).

I'm just curious, CAN this be done? I've never actually had the chance to
try it, but I've been told that other servers cannot be added to a domain
that is currently controlled by SBS 2000.

Thanks

Yes additional member servers or even DCs are allowed, but the SBS remains
the "boss" with all FSMO roles etc.

Well, whoever told you that was wrong. In fact I have one SBS site with three
member servers -- one running as a TS, one running as an internal web
server, and one running as a storage server for a department.

more confirmation.

Both Member Servers and additional Domain Controllers have been possible
with all versions of SBS.

The SBS 'first server' requirement, which is a totally misleading thing MS
continue to suggest, is simple. The SBS must hold all FSMO roles. (period,
full stop, end of story)

As long as SBS satisfies the FSMO criteria and you have license to other
server media the sky's the limit.

Outstanding, Thank you. That's good to know. We plan on expanding soon and
the bossman here kept telling me that we would need to go to a full server
with a full exchange system. I thought it was BS, but figured I'd ask.

Thanks ppl,

RW
